Lewis was a koala who was rescued from Australia’s raging bushfires by Toni Doherty in January 2020. Although Lewis eventually succumbed to his severe burns in hospital, Toni’s heroic actions gave him a chance and showed the world that there is hope and light even in dark times. Based on the monumental public sculpture, this commemoration of the koala who died and the woman who did her best to save him affirms our deep connection with native wildlife and our ongoing role in protecting it.
