Description
The beautiful black and white striped zebra is an iconic animal, the creature that helps children learn the letter z in their ABC’s. But the zebra is in trouble. The herds are shrinking and struggling for survival. Loss of land for expanding agriculture, competition with livestock for food and water, war, and climate change, have left the zebra with an uncertain future. As part of the series ‘Come out for a better tomorrow’, this zebra is cautiously poking its head out of a manhole, forcing us to remember its existence and asking us to work together to save it. This sculpture series calls for awareness of our impact on the world and to allow every living creature the right to feel safe and loved.

What started as an entry to the prolific sculpture event, Sculpture By The Sea in Sydney 2018, turned into a global phenomenon. With many different endangered animals tentatively popping out of manholes in the ground, ‘Come out come out wherever you are’ drew attention to all the animals of the world who are dying because of humans. By bringing a reminder to people who would not usually see them, this sculpture calls for greater awareness of our impact on the beautiful creatures of the world and calls for everyone to allow every living creature the right to feel safe. The sculpture won the Allen’s People’s Choice Award in Sydney, with over 1 million votes cast. People all around the world identified with the sculptures and wanted to be a part of better tomorrow.

Now, Gillie and Marc are continuing with their dream of creating a better tomorrow through art. By extending the idea of the original sculpture, Gillie and Marc are now creating more and more of their manhole creations. With not only endangered animals popping out of the manholes, Gillie and Marc have also extended this to all living things; animals, trees, and even Dogman! Everyone, whether that be humans, animals, young or old, should feel welcomed, feel safe, and be accepted. There should be no reason to hide from the world. Everything is important and should be protected and loved.
