Description The African Forest Elephant is the smaller and more elusive subspecies of the African elephant. Roaming the rainforests of central and western Africa this male is key to the health of his habitat. Yet is constantly threatened by habitat loss human-wildlife conflict and the worst poaching for his beautiful ivory tusks. Every day 55 elephants are killed for the ivory trade making the species vulnerable to extinction.
This is a collection of 12 striking bronze busts, with the first edition currently on exhibition as part of the Faces Of The Wild conservation project in New York City. A partnership with the WWF to bring awareness for threatened species onto the streets of NYC.

Description Tamiyoi's Story On the 16th of October 2015 we were called about a young female elephant found trapped and abandoned down a water well near Maralal in Northern Kenya. She was discovered by the pastoral Samburu community and reported to the Kenya Wildlife Service who retrieved and extracted her ensuring that we received news to action a rescue.
This is a sculpture that represents more than orphaned calves. This is a yearlong celebration of hope and strength for the generation who will grow up into the healthy and supported elephants of tomorrow thanks to the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust. The future of their species in the wild relies on this young generation being strong. Strength we can all help to provide. Because by December next year, when this sculpture leaves London, they’ll have only 19 years left to defy the odds with another generation to follow. This is a sculpture for positive change. One we won’t let become a memorial.

Description Sattao's Story On 18th March 2017 KWS received a number of reports from visitors about a tiny orphaned baby elephant wandering alone and abandoned, very thin and with predator bites on his back legs. Our Keepers based at our Voi relocation unit were informed, as was the DSWT/KWS Tsavo Mobile Veterinary Unit and the DSWT/KWS De-Snaring Team operating within that area. The Rescue Team located the calf after a short search and it became clear that he was in desperate need of rescuing, and in fact with the infamous Tsavo lions plentiful in that area, it was a miracle that he was still alive. Small predators (we suspect jackals), had attacked his rear end and hind legs and hence due to his wounds coupled by poor condition, it was evident that we needed to respond fast. The reason behind him being abandoned remains a mystery, but there had been a couple of poaching causalities in the area around this time and it is possible that one of these victims was his mother. What often happens in such situations is that the calf remains with the herd, but as it loses strength due to a lack of milk, the herd is forced to abandon it when it can no longer keep up due to its weakened state. This is more than likely what transpired in this baby’s case, because he was incredibly thin and dehydrated when eventually found. It is hard to imagine how frightened and stressed he must have been, all alone in such a hostile environment!

Description Mwashoti's Story On the 14th of February an innocent victim of poaching was brought to our attention, a young elephant calf of around one year old required treatment for a horrendous snare wound, a wound that cut through the joint leaving the baby extremely compromised. His mother remained by his side, and had to be anesthetized too in order for his injury to be treated. The decision was made there and then to give him the benefit of doubt and leave him to try to heal in a wild situation, remaining by his mother’s side.

Description Musiara's Story This tiny calf was first observed by a film crew on the plains of the Maasai Mara and after hours of observation it became clear to them that something was definitely not as it should be, as the calf was very weak, and appeared a stranger to the herd. While the herd he was trailing were certainly curious of him, with one female in particular paying special attention, there were no lactating females present in the herd, and soon they left him behind while they moved on with their browsing. It was at this point the film crew first alerted the authorities and Warren Samuels called Angela and sent through photographs of the baby suspecting he was an orphan and might require rescuing.

Description Mbegu's Story On 15th May 2014 Angela was given news about a tiny calf needing to be rescued from the Naibunga Conservancy at Ol Lentille. This was a complicated situation as an elephant had killed a woman from the community and had been shot by KWS as a result. The calf had been left behind in the fracas that ensured with the stampeding herd, and any chance of reconciling her with the herd was impossible given the circumstances. The angry community of Kimanjo had set upon the baby in revenge spearing her several times. When she took refuge in the grounds of a nearby school the children began stoning her. Very swiftly the warden of the Naibunga Conservancy came to the calf’s rescue and kept her safe from the community who were baying for her blood in retaliation for recent events.

Description Kiasa's Story This story began with Neville Sheldrick on a routine patrol flight in one of the Trust’s planes, heading to the Southern sector of Tsavo East National Park from the DSWT Kaluku headquarters. While en route, in an area known as the triangle towards the Tsavo and Athi River junction, he noticed a tiny elephant calf escorted by two big bull elephants. He flew the area scouring for evidence of elephant herds but sighted no other elephants in the area.

Description Jotto's Story The 21st of March began as a particularly fraught day for us, beginning with the news that two orphaned elephants were in need of rescue at different ends of the country; one having fallen down a well in the Namunyak Conservancy in Northern Kenya, and the other possibly a victim of poaching in Tsavo East National Park found near a huge lone rock named “Sobo”, close to the Eastern boundary of the Park. Were this not enough, we then received the tragic news that one of our Elephant Keepers based at the Voi Rehabilitation Unit had suddenly collapsed and died very suddenly and unexpectedly whilst out in the bush with the orphans, which was heart-breaking for all the DSWT team.

Description Enkesha's Story This baby female elephant of approximately one year old was first spotted with a wire snare tight around her trunk on the evening of the 10th February 2017 at Ngirare in the Mara Triangle, in amongst a large herd of wild elephants. Given the late hour, any hope of operating on her that evening was not possible, so the Mara Conservancy management arranged to have their Rangers monitor the herd overnight in order to be able to determine the whereabouts of the injured calf the next morning when the SWT funded Mara Mobile Veterinary Unit working with KWS Veterinary Officer Dr. Campaign Limo could be called to the scene.

Description Barsilinga's Story Gunshots were heard during the evening of 13th April 2012 by the community of the Lpus-La-Mpasion area near Wamba in the Samburu tribal area of Northern Kenya. The next morning a severely wounded female Elephant, with a calf at foot, was spotted in the area. Bullet wounds in the chest area and front legs had rendered her barely able to even move, yet another victim of the ivory trade and a grizzly reminder of the suffering attached to each piece of ivory that is bought or sold. The mother's end was a painful one, full of suffering, and her calf would have been a victim too had he not been one of the lucky few rescued.

Description Emoli's Story On the 23rd of August visitors to Tsavo East came across a calf collapsed and barely breathing along the Voi river circuit. The drought in the southern sector of Tsavo has really hit wildlife hard, particularly the elephants that have remained in that area, with many Mums’ and their calves succumbing to the dry conditions, because while water remains it’s the scarcity of food that is the challenge. Sadly the mothers with young calves have been unable to travel the distances required to find better browse, so choose to remain anchored close to water points, and because of this they are more often than not the first casualties of such brutal droughts. This area of Tsavo is experiencing one of the worst in many decades, with poor rains for two years in a row, so in the recent months we have experienced as many as 100 elephants dying from this 2017 drought in the southern area of Tsavo, and sadly numerous calves, found too late to save.
On 6th May Angela was called by Simon Gitau, Senior Warden Mount Kenya, with reports of an orphaned elephant sighted in community lands, abandoned by the elephant herds of Mount Kenya National Park. The community thankfully were elephant friendly and sought to find assistance for the little baby alerting KWS personnel in the area.

Description Mukkoka's Story On 20th September 2018, while on a routine fixed-wing patrol with DSWT pilot Neville Sheldrick, the Tiva De-Snaring Team leader, Nterto Kapina, spotted the tracks of what appeared to be a lone elephant calf wandering down the Tiva River.

Description Ngilai's Story On the 8th of March Angela and Robert received reports from KWS about the plight of a little elephant who was discovered fallen down a well within Molore Lorach, Ngilai area. The community first found him there on the 6th of March when approaching the well to water their livestock. They left and returned the following day thinking that he might have managed to escape and be reunited with his natal herd, but too fearful to attempt to extract him. On their return on the 7th of March the stranded, exhausted and now injured calf remained stricken in the well. His desperate ongoing attempts to free himself left him with busies and a rubbed raw back from struggling against the jagged well sides.

Description Ndotto's Story On the very peak of the Ndoto Mountains, in Kenya’s remote Northern Frontier District, a tiny newborn baby elephant was found confused, alone and scared in a throng of sheep and goats. This little calf had evidently become mixed up in the nomadic Samburu tribesmen’s livestock soon after he was born. It is probably that the human presence is what frightened his mother leaving the abandoned calf mixed up in the livestock. The traditional Samburu pastoralists here live in an extremely isolated and inaccessible area of Kenya, a beautiful and majestic landscape. Despite many of the Samburu people being sympathetic and use to living this life of coexistence between man, their livestock and the wild animals, sometimes human wildlife conflict can unintentionally create these kinds of tragedies.

Description Maktao's Story In the early morning on the 21st of July reports from a community member were received by the DSWT Ziwani Anti-Poaching team based in Tsavo West National Park alerting them about an elephant calf that had been sighted the previous day alone. That morning he was found again, still alone in hostile territory. Because some of the neighboring communities have suffered at the hands of crop raiding elephants and given the location we suspect human wildlife conflict the reason for this young baby being orphaned.

Description The Orphans is a sculpture exhibit featuring 21 life-size bronze elephants, a mother and 20 orphaned elephants, each orphan symbolises a real elephant currently in the care of the SWT, displayed in the centre of Marble Arch, London from 4th December 2019, for one year. Created by internationally acclaimed artists Gillie and Marc, the sculpture aims to raise funds and awareness for this next generation of elephants who will grow up into the healthy and supported elephants of tomorrow thanks to the SWT.
From Kenya to the heart of London, our sculpture ‘herd’ arrived in London on 4th December, where they will reside for the next 12 months. You can come and meet the 21 life-size bronze elephants and get to know the real-life orphans that have inspired the twenty orphans, who stand around a central mother figure. Each sculpture includes the name of the orphan they symbolise and an interactive information board, enabling you to read the unique rescue story of each elephant and directly support their rehabilitation journey. To help create awareness of our work in the rescue and rehabilitation of orphaned elephants, so that we can save more lives, we encourage you to take photos when you visit and to share these on your social media accounts using the hashtag #ElephantsOfTomorrow
