Woodcut Paintings

Combining their two great passions — painting and sculpture — Gillie and Marc developed their distinctive Woodcut Pop series, featuring Rabbitwoman and Dogman alongside the endangered animals of their Love The Last collection.

Each original work begins as a carved wooden panel, carefully shaped, primed, sealed, and finished in high-gloss enamel. The result is a striking visual interplay between two and three dimensions, where the figures appear to lift from the surface — blurring the line between painting and sculpture.

This series is deeply inspired by the traditions of historic woodcut printmaking, particularly the work of Albrecht Dürer. His mastery of line, form, and detail has influenced the way Gillie and Marc approach carving — reinterpreting these classical techniques through a bold, contemporary lens.

There is a powerful contrast at play: the precision and craftsmanship of traditional woodcut methods combined with vibrant colour, modern subject matter, and a sense of playfulness. The works feel both timeless and immediate.

Originally conceived as a limited exploration, the Woodcut Pop series has grown into one of Gillie and Marc’s most recognisable and celebrated bodies of work — a unique fusion of art history, innovation, and their enduring message of love and conservation.
