He Knew This Would Be a Year of Good Fortune

Permanent Exhibition
32 Old Slip, New York, 10005, United States

World-renowned artists Gillie and Marc bring a stunning new public artwork to 32 Old Slip, New York.

The 190cm tall bronze sculpture features Dogman, one of the artists’ signature hybrid characters, holding a bright red apple. Symbolizing good fortune, this powerful artwork is designed to engage the local community while attracting visitors to this vibrant, multi-cultural area.

"The apple, or ‘ping’ in Chinese, represents peace, which is a core element of this sculpture,” says Gillie, one half of the artistic duo. “Given the global challenges of recent years, an apple signifying peace holds great importance by spreading a message of diversity and acceptance for all.” Marc adds, "Our work is built on love and togetherness, and we hope this sculpture inspires the same values."

Located in the heart of 32 Old Slip, this striking piece spreads positivity and invites reflection on themes of harmony and inclusion. In Chinese tradition, a dog entering a home signifies good fortune, symbolizing loyalty, bravery, and intelligence. Dogs are known for their unconditional love and harmonious relationships with humans, regardless of background.

“By combining Dogman with the apple, we hope to inspire bravery in the pursuit of a better world,” says Gillie. The artists, who have been partners both in life and in art for over 25 years, have created art that tells the autobiographical story of their characters, Dogman and Rabbitgirl. The pair represent diversity and acceptance, showing that even the most unlikely companions can find common ground.

Gillie and Marc’s work, found in cities around the world such as New York, London, Sydney, and Beijing, continues to spread a message of love and unity. This new installation is a fitting tribute to these values and will undoubtedly bring good fortune to 32 Old Slip and beyond.
