The Wave Riders
Gillie and Marc have spent the last 15 years based in Sydney, a city famous for its gorgeous surf beaches. The artists’ son, Ben, is an avid surfer. As a family they would hit the beach frequently to watch him catch waves. They found it absolutely mesmerising. The Wave Riders is a tribute to the lost art of tandem surfing. It was picked for display for the 2015 Sydney Harbour Sculpture Prize and was installed in Sydney’s Woolloomooloo Wharf for three months in the beginning of 2016. Surfing is a surprisingly social sport. Gillie and Marc also created The Wave Riders in the spirit of doing things together. Tandem surfing might have gone out of fashion in the sixties but these wave riders are perfectly in tune with each other, and able to find balance despite the odds. The sculpture is making waves around the world and has found a home both in the stunning luxury resort, Mantra Circle on Cavill in Surfers Paradise and the Jing'An Sculpture Park in Shanghai — the world’s biggest outdoor sculpture exhibition.
