Description Everyone loves to play Jenga, carefully removing the bricks, with butterflies in their stomachs, hoping they’ve balanced it right so the tower doesn’t come crashing down. Jenga is a Swahili word meaning ‘to build’. It’s important to build the tower with complete cohesion, each brick affecting the stability of the others. Inspired by the events of Covid-19, this sculpture looks at how we can use the lessons we have learned and apply them to create a better, kinder world. As we look to build up again, we must think of all the pieces, making sure they are all in harmony: people, business and nature. If we don’t balance all the pieces, the entire stack will fall. We must build a better world so all the animals of the world, like the hippo, can stand strong at the top of the tower.

Description In order to fly, we often need someone on the ground who we know has our back. They’re there to encourage us to soar higher, to lift us up to gain new heights, or to catch us if we fall. These rhinos are doing just that. In a world where they are constantly hunted for their precious horns, worth their weight in gold on the black market, it is so important that there is someone on the ground to look out for them. For too long the rhino has been forced to fend for itself. But we can make a real difference, becoming the support they so desperately need and helping them to fly once more.

Description Koalas are marsupials, which mainly means their young are born before they are ready to live in the outside world. So when this koala joey was born, still an embryo, she would have instinctively headed for her mama’s pouch. There she would have stayed for six months, suckling constantly. When she was strong enough to survive outside the pouch and start eating eucalyptus leaves, she would have left her mama’s pouch and clambered onto her back, which is how we find this mother and daughter, making their way through their eucalyptus forest.

Description The world’s oceans are getting warmer, overfishing is affecting the balance of marine life, and that in turn impacts ecosystems on land. All life is inextricably tied to the sea, and yet humans are harvesting it beyond its capacity. This flying fish, tethered by a rope impeding its freedom of movement and flight, tells the story of negative human impact on the environment, and reminds us that it is imperative we turn the tides before it is too late.

Description Barsilinga's Story Gunshots were heard during the evening of 13th April 2012 by the community of the Lpus-La-Mpasion area near Wamba in the Samburu tribal area of Northern Kenya. The next morning a severely wounded female Elephant, with a calf at foot, was spotted in the area. Bullet wounds in the chest area and front legs had rendered her barely able to even move, yet another victim of the ivory trade and a grizzly reminder of the suffering attached to each piece of ivory that is bought or sold. The mother's end was a painful one, full of suffering, and her calf would have been a victim too had he not been one of the lucky few rescued.
This is a sculpture that represents more than orphaned calves. This is a yearlong celebration of hope and strength for the generation who will grow up into the healthy and supported elephants of tomorrow thanks to the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust. The future of their species in the wild relies on this young generation being strong. Strength we can all help to provide. Because by December next year, when this sculpture leaves London, they’ll have only 19 years left to defy the odds with another generation to follow. This is a sculpture for positive change. One we won’t let become a memorial.

Description It was on one of their many adventures together that Gillie and Marc first saw a wild deer. The dichotomy of his regality and gracefulness, his commanding presence and gentle nature left a deep impression on them both, and they never forgot him. In many cultures around the world, deer symbolise spirituality, so it only made sense that Gillie and Marc created a statue to remember the beautiful creature that touched their souls.

Description They say laughter is the best medicine, and kookaburras have it in spades. Their laughing call is a lovely reminder to take a break, find the lighter side of life and not take things too seriously all the time. But kookaburras also demonstrate that we should work as hard as we play. Mating for life, these birds pair off and then share incubation duties of their eggs, and then share feeding and caring duties of their hatchlings. This equal partnership between all kookaburras in caring for future generations is something each of us can aspire to.

Description The Haast's eagle (Hieraaetus moorei, formerly called Harpagornis moorei) is an extinct species of eagle that once lived in the South Island of New Zealand, commonly accepted to be the pouakai of Maori legend.
The species was the largest eagle known to have existed. Its massive size is explained as an evolutionary response to the size of its prey, the flightless moa, the largest of which could weigh 230 kg (510 lb). Haast's eagle became extinct around 1400, after the moa were hunted to extinction by the first Māori. Gillie and Marc created this sculpture for Karamea which is a town on the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand.

Description Lewis, the koala that was heroically saved by Toni Doherty and taken to an animal hospital during the Australian bushfires, passed away on November 26, 2019. The Port Macquarie Koala Hospital was caring for Lewis. They made the decision to euthanize him after caring for and inspecting his severe burns from the fires. “(Our) number one goal is animal welfare, so it was on those grounds that this decision was made,” the hospital said, according to CNN. They estimated that Lewis was 14 years old.
Gillie and Marc want to make sure that Lewis is memorialized. Lewis will be shown to the world in bronze, wrapped in bandages and sitting on top of a eucalyptus stump.
The artists hope the statutes bring more awareness to the fires, climate change, and koalas. Artist Marc said of the fires in an emailed statement, “This is a terrifying example of the effects of climate change and how destructive it can be. The fires are not just a problem for Australia, they are a global problem.” Marc and Gillie are known for their public sculptures that help spread love, equality and conservation.
Koalas have been severely affected by the fires. Some estimates say their habitats in Australia have been 80% destroyed. Gillie said in an emailed press release of the koala, “It is so upsetting that an animal so important to the Australian identity is threatened with extinction. We want the whole world to come together to help us make sure this adorable creature will always have a home to come back to.”

Description Emoli's Story On the 23rd of August visitors to Tsavo East came across a calf collapsed and barely breathing along the Voi river circuit. The drought in the southern sector of Tsavo has really hit wildlife hard, particularly the elephants that have remained in that area, with many Mums’ and their calves succumbing to the dry conditions, because while water remains it’s the scarcity of food that is the challenge. Sadly the mothers with young calves have been unable to travel the distances required to find better browse, so choose to remain anchored close to water points, and because of this they are more often than not the first casualties of such brutal droughts. This area of Tsavo is experiencing one of the worst in many decades, with poor rains for two years in a row, so in the recent months we have experienced as many as 100 elephants dying from this 2017 drought in the southern area of Tsavo, and sadly numerous calves, found too late to save.
On 6th May Angela was called by Simon Gitau, Senior Warden Mount Kenya, with reports of an orphaned elephant sighted in community lands, abandoned by the elephant herds of Mount Kenya National Park. The community thankfully were elephant friendly and sought to find assistance for the little baby alerting KWS personnel in the area.

Description Ngilai's Story On the 8th of March Angela and Robert received reports from KWS about the plight of a little elephant who was discovered fallen down a well within Molore Lorach, Ngilai area. The community first found him there on the 6th of March when approaching the well to water their livestock. They left and returned the following day thinking that he might have managed to escape and be reunited with his natal herd, but too fearful to attempt to extract him. On their return on the 7th of March the stranded, exhausted and now injured calf remained stricken in the well. His desperate ongoing attempts to free himself left him with busies and a rubbed raw back from struggling against the jagged well sides.

Description Ndotto's Story On the very peak of the Ndoto Mountains, in Kenya’s remote Northern Frontier District, a tiny newborn baby elephant was found confused, alone and scared in a throng of sheep and goats. This little calf had evidently become mixed up in the nomadic Samburu tribesmen’s livestock soon after he was born. It is probably that the human presence is what frightened his mother leaving the abandoned calf mixed up in the livestock. The traditional Samburu pastoralists here live in an extremely isolated and inaccessible area of Kenya, a beautiful and majestic landscape. Despite many of the Samburu people being sympathetic and use to living this life of coexistence between man, their livestock and the wild animals, sometimes human wildlife conflict can unintentionally create these kinds of tragedies.

Description Maktao's Story In the early morning on the 21st of July reports from a community member were received by the DSWT Ziwani Anti-Poaching team based in Tsavo West National Park alerting them about an elephant calf that had been sighted the previous day alone. That morning he was found again, still alone in hostile territory. Because some of the neighboring communities have suffered at the hands of crop raiding elephants and given the location we suspect human wildlife conflict the reason for this young baby being orphaned.
Maktao is part of Gillie and Marc's exhibition - The Orphans.

Description If you imagined a tower made of things Gillie and Marc love, it might look something like this - because that’s exactly what it is! Taking a few of the things they love most - besides each other, of course - and creating a tower out of them is one of their favourite things to do. In this tower, they showcase a bear, a pear, two rhinos, a camera, a cup of coffee and a hippo gazing down over it all, creating a whole greater than the sum of its parts.

Description This elephant was not born into a world where his species would be poached almost to extinction. He was not born into a world where humans would hunt him for his tusks. He was not born into a world where his habitat would be destroyed. He was born into a better world, where he could sit on a giant pear, draw strength from it, and live with power and vitality, free from human threat. Gillie and Marc hope that through their art, they increase awareness about the need for conservation, and help build a better world for elephants and all living creatures.

Description Fish have been around for a long time. Within the deep blue they are perfectly adapted to their aquatic surroundings. But their homes are being poisoned, noxious chemicals and plastics leaching into their watery wonderland, tainting everything they touch. We must respect the water and stop polluting if these ancient fish are to survive. It’s up to us.

Description Gillie and Marc were privileged to encounter the last three northern white rhinos on a visit to Kenya. Unfortunately, since that time, the last male of the species has died, leaving two females. It goes without saying that these beautiful creatures are running out of time, if it is not too late already. Gillie and Marc remain optimistic, and the work continues to preserve and protect Najin and Fatu, mother and daughter, before the northern white rhino is lost forever.

Description Entitled “Come out come out wherever you are” the sculptures call on the world to welcome endangered animals out from hiding, into a place of safety and love. Each animal is depicted tentatively appearing from a manhole. Viewers are asked to embrace them by helping to create a world in which they’ll be free from poaching and kidnapping, so they they may once and for all come out of hiding. These works are also an intrinsic part of Gillie and Marc’s Love the Last project, which aims to use public art to raise awareness, funds and support for some of the world’s most endangered species. Gillie and Marc want to create sculptures all around the world that tell the stories of these endangered species to drive positive change and ensure these animals don’t leave us forever.

Gillie and Marc believe that all people and all creatures have the right to live in a world where safety and love are the rule, not the exception. Description A smaller but no less impressive version of Gillie and Marc’s iconic rhino sculpture, The Last Three, this work echoes the important message of its predecessor. Description In The Wonderful Two, Najin and Fatu will be connected in the middle in a design inspired by the ‘pushmi-pullyu’ from the classic Dr Dolittle books by Hugh Lofting. They will be connected in the middle, with their heads facing opposite directions trying to pull each other to safety, while constricted by the reality of their situation. Najin and Fatu have remained together in their fight to survive, but are stuck in the plight of Northern White Rhinos. This sculpture will continue to spread their message in innovative ways to inspire rhino conservation around the world.
Their horns will also be gold to symbolise the perceived value of the horns their species is killed for. This combination of striking visual elements is designed to disarm with the playful nature of the sculpture which is spreading a message that can be upsetting. By depicting them this way, Gillie and Marc do not want the sculpture to be unsettling but to be a celebration of the survival of the mother and daughter pair.
Gillie and Marc are creating a monumental public art for notable locations worldwide to spread the message and allow the world to meet, touch and love rhinos. Melbourne, Australia is the exciting second location, following on from New York City. ‘The Wonderful Two’ will be installed on the St. Kilda foreshore, as a statement that they support anti-poaching initiatives, and are working to better the planet. The St. Kilda foreshore location is picturesque, a stunning nostalgic seaside landscape and a place for fun and leisure. It is a popular tourist hotspot and the perfect location to host "The Wonderful Two"

Description This possum family is having a great time exploring their garden surrounds, scampering among the rocks and long grass and peering quizzically at the passers-by. They’re comfortable here because of their highly adaptable nature, and have learnt to live among the humans that have encroached on their space. Like their koala cousins, possums have learnt to feed on poisonous eucalyptus leaves, which means they’re rarely without food. Unlike koalas and many other marsupials, possums live in groups, just like this little family of three.

Description Did you know that a group of these marsupials is called a wisdom of wombats? And it’s not surprising, given how intelligent wombats are. With the biggest brains among their fellow marsupials, they’re also stubborn, determined, resourceful, friendly and extremely playful. So it’s only natural that this wombat family would be happily exploring their surroundings, wherever they may be.

Description Canberra’s National Zoo and Aquarium is a small, friendly tourist site that allows its visitors to get up and close and personal with the animals. Crowd favourites are lioness Millie and her two baby cubs, Marjan and Sabi.
When the artists were approached to make something to welcome the guests staying in the Jamala Lodge, they wanted to keep with the Zoo’s “close encounter” atmosphere. Gillie and Marc recreated Millie playing with her lion cubs and the children absolutely adore it. Every day, loads of photos are taken of the children with the sculpture, cuddling the lions they just saw within the zoo.
Gillie and Marc believe art should be touched and loved. For children in particular, the physical laying of hands on animals creates a stronger emotional connection.

Description Diprotodon is classified as “megafauna” and is more affectionately known as a giant wombat. It is the largest marsupial ever to live and first existed 1.6 million years ago. In 2011, a diprotodon skeleton called Kenny was found in Eulo in outback Queensland. Kenny is one of the largest and best-preserved megafauna skeletons ever discovered.
Gillie and Marc were commissioned by Paroo Shire Council to recreate Kenny in bronze. The artists worked with paleontologists from Queensland Museum to use Kenny’s bones to recreate a biologically accurate, life-sized bronze sculpture. The bronze statue has helped create Paroo as a destination to learn about fossils and mega fauna in general. In fact, on the Outback Queensland website it lists the statue as the number one tourist site above mud springs, air raid shelters and rivers.

Description In 2012, four rhinos mysteriously died in Targona’s Western Plain Zoo in Dubbo including a mother and her calf. Gillie and Marc wanted to create an artwork in their memory while also raising awareness for the need for rhino conservation.
Three black rhino mother and calf sculptures were installed at the Visitor Information Centre, the Dubbo Regional Airport and the front of the Zoo. The artists used images of the Zoo’s Black Rhino mother and calf Bakhita and Kufara as inspiration for the sculptures. Both the Director of Dubbo Zoo and the Mayor of Dubbo commented to the press on how well these rhinos linked Dubbo and the Zoo while highlighting the plight of wild rhinos.
Poaching is at unprecedented levels. In Africa, rhino populations are barely keeping pace. These sculptures raise awareness of their potential extinction while highlighting the importance of breeding programs.
“Artists Gillie and Marc have done an amazing job of capturing such an iconic species in a very lifelike and natural way,” said Matthew Fuller, Director of Dubbo Zoo.
“These sculptures reflect the community’s pride in the Zoo and the research and conservation endeavours that take place right here in our city,” said Mayor of Dubbo Councillor Mathew Dickerson. “I believe the sculptures in themselves may become iconic city attractions.”
“We were so happy to do this,” Gillie says. “Each of our rhino sculptures is a memento to the rhinos that were lost, a constant reminder of this endangered species and a message to protect threatened animals.”

Description Gillie and Marc love a challenge. When the artists were commissioned by 101 Collins Street – a Melbourne landmark and home to some of the city’s most influential businesspeople – they knew they had to bring some warmth to this cold and emotionless skyscraper.
A water feature sits in the foyer which the artists wanted to utilise. They made Coming Home, two stunning bronze swans with wings out in full span to show them mid flight, flying home. The artists added a marble plinth just under the surface of the water so the swans look like they’re flying out of a pond. It created an instant atmosphere of companionship in Melbourne’s hectic business district.

"Playful Chimps" is not just a testament to the charm of innocence but also a celebration of the profound bonds that unite them. Description St Lucy’s is a Dominican Catholic primary school that provides education for those with disabilities,” said Gillie. Jo Karaolis was the principal of St Lucy’s School up until her retirement and she wanted to give the children a parting gift. “We were contacted by Jo to create something that would make the kids less afraid of leaving their parents for the day,” Gillie continued.
Saint Dominic is always represented with a dog and a torch because Dominic’s mother supposedly had a dream when she was pregnant that she was giving birth to a dog who would run through the countryside with a torch in its mouth.
“The life-sized bronze Labrador is a new representation of Saint Dominican symbology. “Labs are one of the friendliest types of dogs, and this was placed outside the front of the school to enchant the pupils – especially on their first day.”

Description Gillie and Marc have gone through a lot of change and growth during their expansive career. They like to try new things and are always up for a challenge. But one thing that has remained steady and constant is their passion for animal conservation. The artists created Now and Forever for Tasmania’s Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary. The sculpture is a showcase for three endangered species – the Tasmanian devil, the Eastern quoll and the Tasmanian bettong – who desperately need protection. “The director of the wildlife sanctuary came to us and explained how much danger these animals were in,” says Gillie. “He commissioned three sculptures because his goal is to do something about the ignorance concerning these near-extinct animals, and their importance to Australia.” The artists chose to have the three animals cuddling and hiding behind one another as a way to highlight their vulnerabilities. What we do for these beautiful creatures today, will impact their lives forever.

A koala is difficult to recreate, but Cuddles is extremely lifelike and has been well-received by both the young and young-at-heart.

Description The Pit Pony Experience Project was a community-driven idea to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the last working pit ponies in Australia. Wharrier and Mr Ed retired from the Collinsville Coal Mine in 1990. The ponies were mates to the miners and symbols of strength, unity and companionship in the small town. The Collinsville community banded together to raise nearly $200,000. Gillie and Marc created a life-sized pit pony bronze statue, which is situated in the center of the town. The project went viral and made news headlines across Australia. The Pit Pony brought a small community together, and wowed an entire nation.

Description When Gillie was five years old she lived in Africa and witnessed an elephant being shot before her eyes. This image has had a profound effect on all our work, and protection of animals is a constant theme in all our work. The African women told stories from the past when elephants were so great in numbers they fell from the sky. The truth is in 1930 there were 10 million elephants in Africa. Today that number is less that 400,000. This sculptures plays with gravity and what is possible and what is not. By playing with the impossible we hope that the viewer will realize what it takes to save elephants. Together we do everything we can to protect wildlife.

Description Gillie and Marc have always admired budgies. These bright parrots are arguably one the most beautiful birds in the world, and are loved by so many people. As kids, Marc used to breed the Australian budgie, whereas Gillie would find excuses to visit her cousin’s English budgies (the latter being a few inches bigger).
The artists also find this affectionate bird very relatable due to their adorable “pair bonding”. Believe it or not, budgies can be quite picky when it comes to finding a mate with each bird having its own desired personality criteria for its mate. In bonding, a male budgie will sing to his mate, bob his head at her, and feed her. A male and female budgie will touch beaks often and sit snuggled up against one another as well as preen each other’s feathers.
Gillie and Marc’s budgies have been so well-received that they are working on a project that will see monumental, large-scale budgies installed into various locations all over the world.

Description Featured in Sculpture By The Sea 2015 The idea behind this sculpture is to discuss the effect humans have on animals which is symbolised through the rope pulling the fish down and restricting its movement. We chose the flying fish because they are an animal that has adapted to survive in the face of loss of habitat and changing temperatures. They may have even seen their population increase as a result. Still, the fact remains that humans are destroying their habitat and eventually there will be less places for them to fly to. One day there might even be nowhere left. Flying Fish challenges the idea of humans relationships with animals by asking us to ponder if the fish is succeeding in the face of it's challenges or is it about to be grappled to Earth by the rope lasso? The Sculpture is in three components. The Flying Fish is Bronze painted fibreglass with a galvanized steel internal crossbar the pole rope is a galvanized steel pole with a rust proof painted 16mm mild steel base and fiberglass cladding and the Base Coil rope component is painted fibreglass only.

Description A tank is rolling in, but don’t be afraid. This one will never shoot a round ever again. Here to save the day is a beautiful elephant, crushing the tank to useless metal and leaving the world a little bit safer.
The elephant is symbolic on many levels. Elephants are one of the most iconic creatures on the planet, and also the largest. Its crushing weight shows physically the power of the natural world, yet also its importance. An elephant will always be worth more than a piece of machinery.
Yet it’s also a symbol of triumph. Elephants are one animal that has been massively impacted by the many wars that have raged through their homes. Their ivory tusks have always been a pull for poachers. But in war times, elephant poaching is even more rampant, and their tusks are sold off to buy resources to fuel the war effort. Now, the elephant is the victor. He has taken out the tank and created peace for us all.

Description Zuri is a playful baby African elephant who loves nothing more than exploring, chasing things, and swinging his trunk around in delight. Still too young to fully understand how useful it is, he finds endless amusement in it. But behind his joyful curiosity is a deep fear—of people with guns. He once saw them kill his auntie for her tusks and worries constantly about losing his mother too, knowing he wouldn’t survive alone. Like all African elephants, Zuri is part of a close-knit herd led by a wise matriarch, and though he’s cared for by many loving females, his mother is his lifeline. Elephants like Zuri are vital to their ecosystems, digging water holes and spreading seeds, but threats like poaching, habitat loss, and drought are pushing them to the brink—leaving young calves like him vulnerable and scared in a world that's rapidly changing.

Description This is an evocative and thought-provoking bronze sculpture that blends whimsy with a poignant message about conservation. The piece captures the delightful whimsy of a polar bear effortlessly skiing. Behind the bear, two sturdy spare bootstraps are affixed, inviting members of the public to stand behind him, hold on tight, and join in for the exhilarating ride. The polar bear’s posture and expression convey a sense of freedom and exhilaration, yet there’s an underlying aura of urgency. This urgency serves as a subtle reminder of the rapidly changing climate and the fragile environment that polar bears call home. The playful scenario—of not just a polar bear skiing, but also sharing the thrill with those who dare to join—acts as a bridge to engage viewers, making the experience deeply personal and participatory. “The Polar Bear Races on Skis” is more than an artistic marvel; it is a call to action, inviting viewers to appreciate the beauty and wonder of the natural world while encouraging a commitment to its conservation and protection for future generations.

About the Polar Bear
Polar bears are highly vulnerable because their survival depends on sea ice, which is rapidly disappearing due to climate change. These powerful predators rely on ice platforms to hunt seals, their primary food source, and as the ice melts earlier in the spring and forms later in the fall, their hunting season grows shorter each year. With less access to prey, polar bears face malnutrition, lower reproductive rates, and increased mortality. They are also forced to travel greater distances or come into human communities in search of food, leading to dangerous conflicts. This combination of habitat loss, food scarcity, and climate pressures makes polar bears one of the most at-risk species in the Arctic ecosystem.

The Chimp and Koala Race on the Vespa (Bronze Sculpture)
Description This bronze sculpture captures the whimsical essence of an unexpected friendship between two critically endangered species. The piece features a Western chimpanzee and a koala—both teetering on the edge of extinction—riding together on a classic Vespa scooter. The chimp, with an infectious grin, confidently grips the handlebars, embodying curiosity, intelligence, and resilience. The koala, clutching the chimp’s waist with gentle determination, gazes out with wide-eyed wonder, symbolizing innocence and vulnerability. Behind them, a spare seat beckons the public to jump on and join the journey—a joyful invitation to become part of the movement for conservation and awareness.
While the sculpture’s playful humor instantly charms viewers, its message runs deep. By pairing these unlikely companions, the artwork celebrates unity, cooperation, and hope—reminding us that all species are connected, and that saving one helps preserve the balance of the whole.
Through this endearing scene, Gillie and Marc invite us to ride along in the spirit of compassion and action—to protect these extraordinary creatures before they are lost forever.

About the Western Chimpanzee and the Eastern Koala
The Western Chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes verus) teeters on the edge of extinction, with fewer than 35,000 individuals left in the wild. Once thriving across West Africa, they now survive in fragmented forests scattered through Guinea, Sierra Leone, Liberia, and Côte d’Ivoire. Their decline—over 80% in just a few decades—is driven by deforestation, hunting, and the destruction of their homes for agriculture and mining. These intelligent, emotional beings share over 98% of their DNA with humans, forming deep social bonds and using tools with remarkable skill. Yet every year, their forests grow quieter. Protecting the Western Chimpanzee means preserving not only a species but a mirror of our own humanity and the fragile beauty of the natural world.
The Eastern Koala (Phascolarctos cinereus), once a familiar sight in the eucalyptus forests of eastern Australia, is now sliding toward extinction. Fewer than 80,000 remain, and in some regions, numbers have dropped by more than 50% in just two decades. Their decline is driven by habitat loss from deforestation, urban expansion, bushfires, and prolonged droughts intensified by climate change. Koalas rely almost entirely on eucalyptus leaves for food and shelter, yet millions of their trees are cleared each year, leaving them starving, dehydrated, and vulnerable to disease—especially chlamydia, which can cause blindness and infertility. These gentle marsupials sleep up to 18 hours a day, conserving energy to digest their toxic diet, but their peaceful existence is being shattered by human activity. Without urgent action to restore forests and protect corridors of wild habitat, the soft calls of the Eastern Koala could fall silent, taking with them one of Australia’s most beloved and iconic species.

About the Sumatran Elephant and the Bengal Tiger
The Sumatran Elephant (Elephas maximus sumatranus) lives on the beautiful island of Sumatra in Indonesia, but sadly, it’s now critically endangered. Once there were thousands roaming the forests, but today fewer than 700 remain. Their numbers have fallen because of deforestation, palm oil farming, and poaching, which have taken away much of their home and brought them into conflict with people. These gentle giants are smaller than African elephants, standing about 2.5 meters tall and weighing up to 5 tons, and they play an important role in keeping forests healthy by spreading seeds and helping new plants grow. With more care and protection of their forests, there’s still hope that the Sumatran Elephant can thrive again.
The Bengal Tiger (Panthera tigris tigris) is a powerful and beautiful big cat found in India, Bangladesh, Nepal, and Bhutan. Once widespread, its numbers have fallen sharply due to poaching and habitat loss, leaving only about 2,000 in the wild. In some areas, it’s now critically endangered.
These tigers are the largest of their kind, reaching up to 3 meters long and weighing around 220 kilograms. As top predators, they keep ecosystems balanced. Protecting their forests and stopping illegal hunting are vital to ensure the Bengal Tiger’s survival for future generations.

Nestled snugly in the sidecar, the endearing hairy-nosed wombat peers out with wide-eyed excitement. Sculpture Title The Amur Leopard and Hairy Nosed Wombat Race in the Vespa Side Car
Animal Names Name goes here Conservation Status Critically Endangered
About the Amur Leopard and Northern Hairy Nosed Wombat
The Amur leopard (Panthera pardus orientalis) is one of the world’s most endangered big cats, with fewer than 100 individuals remaining in the wild. It lives in the temperate forests of Russia’s Far East and northeastern China, where cold winters and rugged terrain shape its survival. Recognizable by its thick, pale coat and distinct rosettes, the Amur leopard is a skilled hunter that preys on deer and hares. Its population has declined due to poaching, deforestation, and loss of prey.
Conservation efforts, including anti-poaching patrols, habitat protection, and captive breeding, have helped the population grow slightly in recent years. Still, the species remains critically endangered, relying on continued human protection to survive.
The hairy-nosed wombat, specifically the northern hairy-nosed wombat (Lasiorhinus krefftii), is one of the most critically endangered mammals in the world. Once widespread across eastern Australia, it now survives only in a few small, protected areas in Queensland. The total population is estimated at around 300 individuals, confined mainly to Epping Forest National Park and a second reintroduced site at Richard Underwood Nature Refuge.
The species’ decline has been driven by habitat loss, competition with livestock for food, and predation by dingoes. Conservation efforts, including fenced reserves, habitat restoration, and supplementary feeding, have helped stabilize and slightly increase the population in recent years. Despite this progress, the northern hairy-nosed wombat remains critically endangered, and its survival depends on continued protection and the establishment of additional safe habitats.

It invites viewers to reflect on the harmonious blend of nature and modernity, fostering an appreciation for the beauty and resilience of the natural world amidst contemporary life.
Sculpture Title The Grevy's Zebra Races on the Vespa
Animal Name Name goes here Conservation Status Endangered
About the Grevy's Zebra
The Grévy’s zebra (Equus grevyi) is the most endangered of all zebra species, native to the semi-arid grasslands of northern Kenya and southern Ethiopia. Distinguished by its narrow black-and-white stripes, large ears, and white belly, it is the largest of the zebra species and adapted to survive in dry environments where water and vegetation are scarce. Historically, Grévy’s zebras ranged widely across the Horn of Africa, but their numbers have drastically declined due to human activities.
Today, only about 2,000 individuals remain in the wild, making the Grévy’s zebra critically endangered. Its population has been severely reduced by habitat loss, competition with livestock, poaching, and droughts that limit access to water and grazing areas. Conservation programs in Kenya and Ethiopia focus on community-based wildlife management, anti-poaching patrols, and habitat restoration to protect the remaining herds. While these efforts have slowed the decline, the species’ survival still depends on sustained conservation action and protection of its fragile ecosystem.

About the Giant Panda
The giant panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca) is a bamboo-eating bear native to the mountainous forests of central China, known for its distinctive black-and-white coat and gentle temperament. It was once considered critically endangered due to severe habitat loss, deforestation, and its naturally low birth rate. The panda’s dependence on bamboo, which makes up nearly all of its diet, further limited its ability to adapt to environmental changes, leading to a sharp population decline during the 20th century.
Thanks to decades of intensive conservation efforts, including habitat protection, anti-poaching laws, and successful captive breeding programs, the wild population has slowly recovered. Today, there are about 1,860 pandas living in the wild and around 600 in captivity. Although its status has been upgraded to Vulnerable, the giant panda remains threatened by habitat fragmentation and climate change, which continue to endanger the bamboo forests it depends on for survival.

The Galapagos Tortoise Races on Roller Skates (Bronze Sculpture)
Description This endearing and imaginative bronze sculpture brings together the ancient, slow-moving charm of the Galapagos tortoise with the lively spirit of roller-skating. The artwork depicts a stately Galapagos tortoise, its sturdy legs outfitted with a pair of retro roller skates, symbolizing resilience in the face of accelerating change. Adding to its appeal, the sculpture invites direct interaction: members of the public are encouraged to sit atop the tortoise and “ride” along, creating a playful yet poignant connection to the conservation message. This interactive element transforms viewers from passive observers into participants, highlighting the role humans must play in supporting and protecting these critically endangered animals. By placing the tortoise in the surreal scenario of roller-skating, the artist underscores the stark contrast between the timeless, enduring pace of nature and the rapid acceleration of modern life. The roller skates—emblems of speed and adaptability—juxtapose with the tortoise’s ancient form, inviting reflection on the pressures fast-moving environmental changes impose on species that evolve slowly. The result is a whimsical, thought-provoking piece that entertains while inspiring action for conservation.

About the Galapagos Tortoise
The Galápagos tortoise (Chelonoidis nigra complex) is one of the most iconic species of the Galápagos Islands, renowned for its massive size, long lifespan, and evolutionary significance. These tortoises were instrumental in shaping Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution, as their physical differences from island to island illustrated natural selection in action. Historically, hundreds of thousands of Galápagos tortoises roamed the archipelago, but their numbers plummeted due to overhunting by sailors, habitat destruction, and the introduction of invasive species such as rats, pigs, and goats that preyed on eggs and competed for food.
Today, it is estimated that around 15,000 Galápagos tortoises remain across several islands, divided into 13 recognized subspecies, some of which are still critically endangered. Intensive conservation and breeding programs, led by the Galápagos National Park and the Charles Darwin Foundation, have helped restore populations on islands like Española and Isabela. While their recovery is a conservation success story, ongoing efforts are crucial to protect their fragile ecosystems and ensure the long-term survival of these ancient giants.

About the Javan Rhinoceros
The Javan rhinoceros (Rhinoceros sondaicus) is one of the world’s most critically endangered large mammals, once widespread across Southeast Asia, from India to Indonesia. It is the smallest of the rhino species and is distinguished by its single horn and mosaic-like skin folds. The species suffered a severe decline due to poaching for its horn and habitat loss caused by agricultural expansion and human settlement. By the 20th century, the Javan rhino had vanished from nearly all of its former range, surviving only in a single protected area.
Today, there are estimated to be around 75 Javan rhinos remaining, all confined to Ujung Kulon National Park on the western tip of Java, Indonesia. This isolated population faces ongoing threats from disease, natural disasters, and limited genetic diversity, which make recovery extremely difficult. Conservationists are working to protect and expand their habitat, monitor individuals, and prevent poaching, but the species’ survival remains precarious.

About the Tapanuli Orangutan
The Tapanuli orangutan (Pongo tapanuliensis) is the rarest great ape species in the world, found only in the Batang Toru forest ecosystem of North Sumatra, Indonesia. Discovered as a distinct species in 2017, it is genetically and morphologically different from both the Sumatran and Bornean orangutans. Tapanuli orangutans live in montane and hill forests at elevations between 300 and 1,300 meters, feeding mainly on fruits, leaves, bark, and insects. They are highly intelligent, solitary primates that build nests in trees each night and play a vital role in forest regeneration through seed dispersal.
The Tapanuli orangutan is listed as Critically Endangered by the IUCN Red List, with an estimated fewer than 800 individuals remaining in the wild. Their survival is threatened by habitat loss, illegal hunting, and infrastructure development, particularly the construction of a hydroelectric dam in the Batang Toru region, which fragments their already limited habitat. Conservation organizations are working to protect remaining forest areas, establish wildlife corridors, and engage local communities in sustainable land-use practices. Without immediate and effective protection, the Tapanuli orangutan faces a high risk of extinction within the next few decades.

About the Northern White Rhinoceros
The northern white rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum cottoni) is one of the most critically endangered mammals on Earth, once roaming across parts of Central and East Africa, including Sudan, Uganda, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and the Central African Republic. Decades of poaching for their horns and civil unrest in their native habitats led to a catastrophic population collapse. By the early 2000s, only a handful remained, and despite conservation efforts, the last wild populations disappeared soon after.
Today, only two northern white rhinos survive, both females named Najin and Fatu, living under armed protection at the Ol Pejeta Conservancy in Kenya. With no surviving males, the subspecies is functionally extinct. However, scientists are working to save it through advanced reproductive technologies, including in vitro fertilization (IVF) and stem cell research, using preserved genetic material from deceased males. These efforts offer a small but vital hope that the northern white rhino might one day be revived and reintroduced into the wild.

The Octopus Races on Rollers Skates (Bronze Sculpture)
Description The artwork depicts a Kermadec octopus (Callistoctopus kermadecensis), a rare deep-sea species found exclusively around a remote volcanic island chain northeast of New Zealand, its body radiating quiet strength and fluid motion, while four of its slender arms balance firmly atop roller skates. The other arms extend outward like fluid ribbons in the dark, curling and reaching as though charting a path between the ocean depths and the surface world. The open space surrounding the figure invites viewers to imagine themselves skating alongside this elusive octopus, caught up in a surreal race where abyssal mystery meets human play. Beyond its whimsy, the sculpture serves as a poignant reminder of how little we know about deep-sea life, and how easily such fragile species could be lost. The octopus is vulnerable to human activity that alters deep ocean ecosystems, making it a symbol of both wonder and precarity. In its unusual balance—half grounded, half unfurling—the piece reflects the tension between resilience and vulnerability that defines life in the deep. With humor, elegance, and a touch of surreal imagination, The Octopus Races on Roller Skates sparks curiosity and reflection, urging us to consider the fragile beauty of the unknown.

About the Kermadec Octopus
The Kermadec octopus (Octopus kermadecensis) is a rare deep-sea species found only around the Kermadec Islands, a remote volcanic arc northeast of New Zealand. Known from just a handful of specimens, this elusive cephalopod remains one of the least-studied octopus species in the Pacific Ocean.
With its reddish hue and graceful, elongated arms, it embodies the quiet mystery of the deep. Scientists believe its entire population may be confined to the deep-water habitats of the Kermadec Ridge — a region renowned for its rich biodiversity and geological wonder.
Although not formally assessed as endangered, its rarity and restricted range make it potentially vulnerable to future threats such as deep-sea mining, habitat disturbance, and ocean warming. Protected waters within the Kermadec Marine Reserve offer hope that this hidden marvel of the ocean will continue to thrive unseen in the deep.

About the Mountain Gorilla
The mountain gorilla (Gorilla beringei beringei) is a subspecies of the eastern gorilla found in the forested mountains of central Africa, primarily within the Virunga Mountains spanning Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and in Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. These powerful yet gentle primates live in tight family groups led by a dominant silverback male and are known for their intelligence, social bonds, and complex communication. For decades, their survival was threatened by poaching, habitat destruction, disease, and civil conflict in the region.
Thanks to intensive conservation efforts, including anti-poaching patrols, community-based tourism, and veterinary interventions, the mountain gorilla population has made a remarkable recovery. Today, there are an estimated 1,060 individuals in the wild — a significant increase from fewer than 300 in the 1980s. Despite this progress, the species remains endangered, facing ongoing risks from human encroachment, disease transmission, and climate change. Continued protection and sustainable ecotourism are essential to ensure their long-term survival in the wild.

About the Hippopotamus and the Red Wolf
The common hippopotamus (Hippopotamus amphibius) is a large, semi-aquatic mammal native to sub-Saharan Africa. It spends most of its time in rivers and lakes to stay cool, coming out at night to graze on grasses. Hippos are vital to freshwater ecosystems, helping cycle nutrients and shape river habitats.
Today, the species is listed as Vulnerable by the IUCN, with about 115,000 to 130,000 individuals left in the wild. Their numbers are falling due to poaching, habitat loss, and drought. Conservation efforts focus on anti-poaching patrols, habitat protection, and trade restrictions under CITES to prevent further decline.
The red wolf (Canis rufus) is a medium-sized canid native to the southeastern United States, once ranging from Texas to Florida and up to Pennsylvania. It has a reddish-brown coat, long legs, and a slender build, making it distinct from both gray wolves and coyotes. Red wolves are social animals that live in family packs and play a key ecological role as apex predators, helping control prey populations and maintain balance in their ecosystems.
The red wolf is classified as Critically Endangered by the IUCN, with fewer than 20 individuals remaining in the wild, all in eastern North Carolina. Around 250 red wolves live in captivity as part of breeding and recovery programs. Their survival is threatened by habitat loss, human conflict, and hybridization with coyotes. Conservation efforts focus on habitat restoration, public education, and reintroduction programs to rebuild wild populations and prevent the species from disappearing entirely.

The Masai Giraffe and Lion Race on the Scooter (Bronze Sculpture)
Description This bronze sculpture presents a whimsical yet deeply meaningful scene: a West African lion and a Masai giraffe sharing a scooter, with room left behind for an adventurous passenger. The giraffe leads at the front, its long neck stretching skyward while the lion perches behind, holding on with quiet strength and resolve. Behind them, an open space invites the public to imagine themselves joining this extraordinary ride. By uniting these iconic African animals on a single scooter and leaving space for human participation, the artist creates a bridge between the natural world and human experience. The scooter, a symbol of modern motion and convenience, contrasts with the untamed grace of the giraffe and the endangered majesty of the West African lion. Once widespread across the region, this subspecies now faces severe decline due to habitat loss, poaching, and dwindling prey — making its depiction here both a tribute and a plea for protection. This playful composition thus carries a quiet urgency. It encourages reflection on our shared journey with wildlife — reminding us that we are not mere observers of nature, but passengers whose actions determine its fate. Both inviting and symbolic, the sculpture transforms a simple ride into a celebration of imagination, coexistence, and our collective responsibility to safeguard Earth’s most vulnerable creatures.

About the Masai Giraffe and West African Lion
The Masai giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis tippelskirchi) is the largest giraffe subspecies, native to central and southern Kenya and Tanzania. It is easily recognized by its irregular, star-shaped patches and towering height, which can reach up to 18 feet. Masai giraffes browse on leaves, flowers, and fruits from tall trees, especially acacias, and play a vital role in shaping savanna ecosystems by pruning vegetation and dispersing seeds.
The Masai giraffe is listed as Endangered by the IUCN, with an estimated about 45,000 individuals remaining in the wild. Their population has declined sharply due to poaching, habitat loss, and human encroachment. Conservation efforts include anti-poaching patrols, habitat protection, and community-based wildlife programs in Kenya and Tanzania. These measures aim to stabilize and grow populations to ensure the long-term survival of this iconic African species.
The West African lion (Panthera leo leo) is a critically endangered subspecies native to the savannas and forests of West Africa, found mainly in countries such as Senegal, Nigeria, and Burkina Faso. Smaller and less maned than other African lions, it has a slender build and a darker coat. As an apex predator, the West African lion plays a vital ecological role by regulating herbivore populations and maintaining ecosystem balance. However, its numbers have plummeted, with fewer than 400 individuals remaining in the wild, mostly in isolated reserves like Niokolo-Koba National Park and the W-Arly-Pendjari Complex.
The population decline is driven by habitat loss, poaching, human-wildlife conflict, and the depletion of natural prey. In response, conservation organizations such as Panthera and the IUCN Cat Specialist Group are working to protect and restore populations through anti-poaching efforts, habitat preservation, and community-based conservation programs. These initiatives aim to reconnect fragmented habitats and promote coexistence with local people, offering hope for the long-term survival of one of Africa’s most endangered and iconic predators.
