Gillie and Marc’s latest work is an exciting explosion between their painting and sculpture. With a love for both 2D and 3D work they have created a unique style of work which are in essence sculptured paintings.

Gillie and Marc spent a lot of their early creative life in Ubud, Bali. This was the home of painted wood carvings. They began to collect many Balinese wood carvings and learned how to artistically paint wood. Over the years they experimented in relief woodcuts looking to give it a contemporary feel. Much of their inspiration is looking at traditional art forms like bronze sculpture and wood carving and then creating ways to make it contemporary.

They are excited and proud to introduce their latest and favourite collection “Woodcut POP". These are carved wooden panels primed and sealed and then painted with a pop gloss enamel. These vibrant and exciting works allow the 2D paintings to fly off the wall giving excitement and dimension to wall art. Rabbitgirl and Dogman literally pop off the wall in a 3D effect. Gillie and Marc were delighted to contribute a mural to the Bondi promenade as part of the Activated Walls project. Using their alter-egos Dogman and Rabbitwoman as subjects, Gillie and Marc were excited to give some love back to their town. Love is about sharing all that you have with someone, and even an unlikely couple like Dogman and Rabbitwoman can enjoy some ice blocks together at Bondi Beach. The location of this mural is important to the area, as Bondi is a neighbourhood made of people from all around the world and this artwork encourages togetherness and interactivity in a beautiful environment. Jenga is a Swahili word meaning ‘to build’. It’s important to build the tower with complete cohesion, each brick affecting the stability of the others. Inspired by the events of Covid-19, this sculpture looks at how we can use the lessons we have learned and apply them to create a better, kinder world. As we look to build up again, we must think of all the pieces, making sure they are all in harmony: people, business and nature. If we don’t balance all the pieces, the entire stack will fall. We must build a better world so all the animals of the world, like the hippo, can stand strong at the top of the tower.

The African women told stories from the past when elephants were so great in numbers they fell from the sky. The truth is in 1930 there were 10 million elephants in Africa. Today that number is less that 400,000. This sculptures plays with gravity and what is possible and what is not. By playing with the impossible we hope that the viewer will realize what it takes to save elephants. Together we do everything we can to protect wildlife.

Description
Inspired by the true story and the film ‘Born Free’, this sculpture is a celebration of an orphaned lion cub who was saved by a loving couple. In Northern Kenya, a game warden called George Adamson was sent to deal with a lion who killed a man. Finding three cubs that were left behind he took them home to his wife, Joy, naming them Big One, Lastika and Elsa. They raised the cubs themselves rehoming two at a zoo. But they had formed a special connection with Elsa. They decided to release her to the wild and started the difficult journey of teaching her to fend for herself. After a lot of setbacks including a lack of hunting skills, being attacked by a warthog, and even becoming seriously injured after a different attack, Elsa found her feet. With a lot of hard work and dedication, they taught her how to be a wild cat and set her free in Kenya. Elsa grew to have cubs of her own, starting a new generation of lions that would have never been.

In the sculpture, Elsa stands on a 1961 landrover surrounded by orphan cubs, 20 in total. There are also two couples of adult lions, George and Joy, and Bill and Virginia, representing the real-life couple who raised the little orphaned Elsa, and the actors who played them in the movie. The cubs symbolise the future generations of lions.
