Description Maurice loved to travel. He could never live as his descendants do now, fenced in and forced to either give wool or produce babies to be slaughtered. That’s a terrible life. But he isn’t like these sheep, he is wild. He would roam around his Caspian home like a great explorer, climbing high up mountains and exploring grassy meadows below. He couldn’t wait to see where he would end up next.
Artwork Features In this highly expressive and passionate style Gillie and Marc have let their emotions run free in this explosive collection of freehand painting. Inspired by the styles of Brett Whiteley, Francis Bacon, and Jean-Michel Basquiat, Gillie and Marc have combined enamel paint with oil pastel to breathe life into the worlds most endangered species. Over the past five years, Gillie and Marc spent hours sketching and studying wildlife, travelling the globe to meet these animals up close. These sketches have now been brought to life in vibrant colour with love and passion. Each painting is created as a team with both the artists bringing their own emotion into every painting.

This is a sculpture that represents more than orphaned calves. This is a yearlong celebration of hope and strength for the generation who will grow up into the healthy and supported elephants of tomorrow thanks to the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust. The future of their species in the wild relies on this young generation being strong. Strength we can all help to provide. Because by December next year, when this sculpture leaves London, they’ll have only 19 years left to defy the odds with another generation to follow. This is a sculpture for positive change. One we won’t let become a memorial.
Mbegu is part of Gillie and Marc's exhibition - The Orphans.

Description In "Melbourne After Dark," this artwork captures the essence of a nighttime adventure in the vibrant city of Melbourne. Rabbitwoman and Dogman ride a blue scooter, set against the backdrop of the iconic Flinders Street Station and the modern skyscrapers of the city. Both characters, dressed in shades of blue, seem to embrace the cool evening atmosphere, with the lively colors and dynamic graffiti-inspired style bringing energy to the scene. The blending of playful figures and the urban landscape evokes a sense of exploration, love, and the thrill of discovering the city under the lights. The bold lines and vivid hues make this piece a striking celebration of Melbourne’s charm.
Artwork Features The purest example of the artist’s freehand work, Gillie and Marc’s ‘Contemporary Line & Stencil Paintings’ are a stunning series that pairs unashamedly bold colors with deep black line work to form intimate moments featuring their signature alter egos, endangered wildlife and more. Description Melbourne is one of the greatest cities to live in. There is so much going on that it’s impossible to get bored. For Rabbitwoman and Dogman, this was a dream! Every day would be a new adventure. Picnics in the park, exploring museums and galleries, visiting funky cafes, and soaking up the local music. They always have so much fun in Melbourne.
Artwork Features Gillie and Marc’s latest work is an exciting explosion between their painting and sculpture. With a love for both 2D and 3D work they have created a unique style of work which are in essence sculptured paintings.
Gillie and Marc spent a lot of their early creative life in Ubud, Bali. This was the home of painted wood carvings. They began to collect many Balinese wood carvings and learned how to artistically paint wood. Over the years they experimented in relief woodcuts looking to give it a contemporary feel. Much of their inspiration is looking at traditional art forms like bronze sculpture and wood carving and then creating ways to make it contemporary.
They are excited and proud to introduce their latest and favourite collection “Woodcut POP". These are carved wooden panels primed and sealed and then painted with a pop gloss enamel. These vibrant and exciting works allow the 2D paintings to fly off the wall giving excitement and dimension to wall art. Rabbitgirl and Dogman literally pop off the wall in a 3D effect. The modern explosion of colour and vibrancy is contemporary art at its cutting edge.
Galleries, collectors and corporates across the globe have already fallen in love with Woodcut POP with 10 major commissions now in progress.

Gillie and Marc paint each unique canvas side-by-side ensuring love is engrained in every brushstroke of each one-of-a-kind work of art. Recently inspired by the pop style of Andy Warhol and the iconic stencils of street artists Banksy and Mr. Brainwash, Gillie and Marc expanded their collection with the edgy addition of using spray paint stencils on their canvases. The stark contrast of bright colors beneath a dark stencil breathes life into this limited series, embodying Gillie and Marc’s philosophy of the importance of accessible art by playfully bringing the street to the canvas.

MINI Paceman - Sydney CBD
Gillie and Marc were one of three artists commissioned to create a unique billboard mural as part of a series for the MINI Paceman. The mural ran as a billboard in Sydney and now resides at the MINI Gallery in Melbourne. The goal was to interpret the MINI Paceman with a new slant on things. Incorporating Dogman and Rabbitgirl into the artwork gave human characteristics to the iconic MINI and created the idea of a strange world where a dog and a rabbit would stop to take a photo of a MINI Paceman scooting down a red carpet. “We do like to have a lot of humour in our art,” said Gillie. “We like to have that fun element.” “It’s biographical,” explained Marc. “I’m the dog and Gillie’s the rabbit. We’re two complete opposites as a rabbit and a dog but we’re partners in life, and lovers even though we’re an unlikely couple. The MINI Paceman is an unlikely car but it’s changing the way we see cars.” The artists decided to create the car as a personality with Dogman and Rabbitgirl totally mesmerised by it. “The MINI Paceman is an icon and it’s going to be an icon for years to come,” said Marc. “It’s a fun car and the whole idea of the MINI is to go out and enjoy.”

Description Musiara's Story This tiny calf was first observed by a film crew on the plains of the Maasai Mara and after hours of observation it became clear to them that something was definitely not as it should be, as the calf was very weak, and appeared a stranger to the herd. While the herd he was trailing were certainly curious of him, with one female in particular paying special attention, there were no lactating females present in the herd, and soon they left him behind while they moved on with their browsing. It was at this point the film crew first alerted the authorities and Warren Samuels called Angela and sent through photographs of the baby suspecting he was an orphan and might require rescuing.

Mwashoti is part of Gillie and Marc's exhibition - The Orphans.
If you purchase him, 30% will go directly to the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust.

Artwork Features For the most part, fiberglass sculptures are the same as resin sculptures.
A resin sculpture is a work of art cast with the material fiberglass, a material that is perfect for making beautiful sculptures. Not only is it very light, but it is also incredibly durable and malleable making it the perfect material to mould into whatever intricate shape you like while knowing it will last for a very long time.
When creating beautiful sculptures in fiberglass and resin, Gillie and Marc like to have a bit of fun. Sometimes works are crafted in one bold color, sometimes they are splashed with many colors. For every purchase of a fiberglass sculpture you will receive a certificate of authenticity, titled, signed, dated and editioned by the artists.

Description Ndotto's Story On the very peak of the Ndoto Mountains, in Kenya’s remote Northern Frontier District, a tiny newborn baby elephant was found confused, alone and scared in a throng of sheep and goats. This little calf had evidently become mixed up in the nomadic Samburu tribesmen’s livestock soon after he was born. It is probably that the human presence is what frightened his mother leaving the abandoned calf mixed up in the livestock. The traditional Samburu pastoralists here live in an extremely isolated and inaccessible area of Kenya, a beautiful and majestic landscape. Despite many of the Samburu people being sympathetic and use to living this life of coexistence between man, their livestock and the wild animals, sometimes human wildlife conflict can unintentionally create these kinds of tragedies.
Ndotto is part of Gillie and Marc's exhibition - The Orphans.

Description Inspired by the true story and the film ‘Born Free’, this sculpture is a celebration of an orphaned lion cub who was saved by a loving couple. In Northern Kenya, a game warden called George Adamson was sent to deal with a lion who killed a man. Finding three cubs that were left behind he took them home to his wife, Joy, naming them Big One, Lastika and Elsa. They raised the cubs themselves rehoming two at a zoo. But they had formed a special connection with Elsa. They decided to release her to the wild and started the difficult journey of teaching her to fend for herself. After a lot of setbacks including a lack of hunting skills, being attacked by a warthog, and even becoming seriously injured after a different attack, Elsa found her feet. With a lot of hard work and dedication, they taught her how to be a wild cat and set her free in Kenya. Elsa grew to have cubs of her own, starting a new generation of lions that would have never been.
In the sculpture, Elsa stands on a 1961 landrover surrounded by orphan cubs, 20 in total. There are also two couples of adult lions, George and Joy, and Bill and Virginia, representing the real-life couple who raised the little orphaned Elsa, and the actors who played them in the movie. The cubs symbolise the future generations of lions.
If you purchase any of the lions, 30% will go directly to the Born Free Foundation.

Medium Acrylic and enamel on canvas, printed on a billboard
Edition Number /1
Location Sydney CBD
Description Gillie and Marc were one of three artists commissioned to create a unique billboard mural as part of a series for the MINI Paceman.

Description Ngilai's Story On the 8th of March Angela and Robert received reports from KWS about the plight of a little elephant who was discovered fallen down a well within Molore Lorach, Ngilai area. The community first found him there on the 6th of March when approaching the well to water their livestock. They left and returned the following day thinking that he might have managed to escape and be reunited with his natal herd, but too fearful to attempt to extract him. On their return on the 7th of March the stranded, exhausted and now injured calf remained stricken in the well. His desperate ongoing attempts to free himself left him with busies and a rubbed raw back from struggling against the jagged well sides.

Description Artists Gillie and Marc Schattner, on August 26, Women’s Equality Day 2019, are bringing to life a dream, the move towards equal representation in women statues.
In a moment of deep self-reflection, they realized they had been contributing to the lack of women representation in their public art. However, the artists decided they could not sit back and let history repeat itself. Something has to change, and so with their new project, ‘Statues for Equality’, they have self-funded ten new women statues.
Because of this project, New York is becoming the first city to change the dynamics considerably - as the ten women are launched as statues the number will jump from 3% to 9%. The project will launch at RXR Realty’s iconic Avenue of the Americas.
Joining ‘Statues for Equality’ are ten portraits of each woman in a groundbreaking new show that expresses diversity and gender equality. Exhibiting alongside their permanent statue sisters at 61 Broadway, NYC, they will be on show for the public for 12 months. The women are painted on fabric from around the world, just as they as women represent the diversity of womankind, as does the soft materials that embody strength. Each piece has its own texture, shape, and feel.
The women’s faces are depicted in black and white, revealing the fine attention to detail from the artists; each line becomes part of the narrative of the portraits. However, their hair and clothes are full of colour and patterns. Flowing from the women they extend these versions and ideals of how women present themselves in society.
The use of fabric can take literal meaning; even though the material is soft, beautiful, and used as a way to express individuality. Fabric is also a carrier, babies are held close to us in wraps of material; goods and objects are transported for when we cannot hold everything; and it dresses us, for warmth and support.
The metaphor extends into the roles of women, and Gillie and Marc’s clever use of this medium, reminds us again, how important women are to our lives and the basis of society. Fabric is also another way to show our individuality.
Just as the ten women statues, made out of bronze, who will stand larger than life can teach us something about diversity and gender equality; as can these softer, tender moments of intimate and feminine representatives.
For the next 12 months, Gillie and Marc are aiming to paint 100 women, voted for by the public, who inspire greatness in our societies.
#womenforequality will become an extension of #statuesforequality – use the hashtag to vote for the most inspirational women you know, and take a photo with the paintings and statues to share Gillie and Marc’s message of equality.
Artwork Features Mixing two elements together, paint and fabric, these fabric paintings create a unique, 3-dimensional piece of art. With added texture, patterns, and depth from the fabrics, these paintings are transformed into something so much more exciting than a normal painting. Using beautiful fabrics from all over the world, these paintings are laced with fun, using patterns and colors in unusual places giving a different perspective on how things should look.

Description "Created by artist-activists Gillie and Marc and Yorta Yorta and Dja Dja Warung artist Jandamarra Cadd, the statue captures a powerful and determined Peris. Cadd also painted the portrait of a bare-footed Peris that sits in Parliament House. Peris was the first Indigenous woman to be elected to parliament and represented the ALP in the senate for the Northern Territory for three years.
The artists said there were multiple layers to the statue. The saltwater crocodile and the blackheaded python represent Peris’ totems on her mother and father’s sides. Three native hibiscus flowers, the flowers of the stolen generation, are symbolic of her mother and grandparents, who were forcibly removed from their parents. At Peris’ feet are her hockey stick and Olympic gold medal. Peris swapped hockey - for which she had won an Olympic gold medal with the Hockeyroos - for athletics and managed to remain at the top of her game.
“Most statues are of people on a podium, or a square box, but I didn’t come out of a square box, my life has been one of resilience and strength", Peris said. “That’s why I wanted it to have me running over Country. It’s rugged.”
At the unveiling, Peris’ children Destiny and Jack said they had not seen their mother in her sporting endeavors but they had witnessed her advocacy in Indigenous health, education and human rights. “There was not a dry eye ... when they spoke,” Peris said. “I want people to see that statue, young Australians particularly, to know you’ve got to have your dreams and aspirations and to know that with hard work and discipline, you can achieve anything in life.”
Awarded the Order of Australia in 1997, Peris is an official ambassador for the Australian Aboriginal Education Foundation, which provides scholarships for Indigenous students. Later in the year, the statue will move to her hometown of Darwin."

Description Gillie and Marc have gone through a lot of change and growth during their expansive career. They like to try new things and are always up for a challenge. But one thing that has remained steady and constant is their passion for animal conservation. The artists created Now and Forever for Tasmania’s Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary. The sculpture is a showcase for three endangered species – the Tasmanian devil, the Eastern quoll and the Tasmanian bettong – who desperately need protection. “The director of the wildlife sanctuary came to us and explained how much danger these animals were in,” says Gillie. “He commissioned three sculptures because his goal is to do something about the ignorance concerning these near-extinct animals, and their importance to Australia.” The artists chose to have the three animals cuddling and hiding behind one another as a way to highlight their vulnerabilities. What we do for these beautiful creatures today, will impact their lives forever.

Description This resin sculpture Nyani, the reclining gorilla is a small version of the larger King Nyani in New York. We all know the story of King Kong, the gargantuan gorilla who snatches the beautiful woman and carries her up the empire state building with terrifying roars. We all know this version of terror and aggression, but so few of us know the truth behind the real-life gorilla, and this is a problem. Now, the largest bronze gorilla statue in the world is making its way to NYC, and this time the people of New York will get a second chance to save him and all of the endangered gorillas of the world, changing the narrative and becoming the champions of all gorillas.
Inspired by the film, Gillie and Marc Schattner the world-renowned public artists are working alongside the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund to bring another version of King Kong’s story to the streets of New York. With the creation of a monumental bronze public sculpture entitled King Nyani, Swahili for gorilla, the artists are bringing the gigantic gorilla back to the city, but this time with love. In a trip to Uganda, the artists were able to see a family of mountain gorillas in the wild and were moved to tears at the loving family unit. Their sculpture is based on the head of the family, a dominant silverback gorilla. The artists were blown away by the level of empathy and kindness he had, a very different image of the scary gorilla that is so often portrayed in media. “It was beautiful watching the silverback interacting with his family. He was so gentle and loving and clearly cared deeply for his family”, Marc recalls. “We knew we had to let the world know about this loving and gentle side of gorillas. They are often so misunderstood and thought of as scary and dangerous animals. But if they were able to see the silverback, maybe they wouldn’t be so scared”, remarks Gillie.
Gorillas are one of our closest relatives sharing 98% of our DNA. They share many of the same behaviors as humans such as laughter and sadness. But there may be only 1000 mountain gorilla left in the wild and fewer than 3800 eastern lowland gorilla. Humans are the reason why. Illegal poaching, war and deforestation are making it harder and harder for this beautiful animal to survive. “We couldn’t sit back and do nothing when these amazing creatures that are genetically so similar to us are in danger”, said Marc. All gorillas are critically endangered and desperately need help. Now NYC will become the city to save them. King Nyani is bringing the call for all New Yorkers to save the new King Kong. King Nyani is the largest bronze gorilla sculpture in the world and gives an interactive experience unlike any other. With his hand large enough to fit 2-3 people, the public can get up close and personal with this gentle giant and fall in love with him. In the movie, Kong grabs the woman in his hand to possess her. Now all of NY is invited to sit in his hand and be a true friend. “We wanted to create a sculpture where the public could really get close to the silverback, both physically and emotionally. Being able to sit in his hand and look up to into his gentle face we hope they will fall in love and join the movement to save the gorillas” says Gillie.
King Nyani is the artist’s interpretation to represent all gorillas and is part of the broader ‘Love The Last’ project, a social movement driven by public art to raise awareness, funds and support for endangered animals across the world, encouraging people to take action before we lose these animals forever. As partners of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund, the installation will be using its platform to raise much-needed funds for the charity. An incredible organisation, they have managed to turn the numbers around, making the mountain gorilla one of the only wild ape populations to be increasing. King Nyani will be on display in Hudson Park, New York City on 24 August 2020.
Artwork Features Resin is a mixture of materials including urethane, silicone, epoxy and polyester. When creating beautiful sculptures in resin, Gillie and Marc like to have a bit of fun.
