She is depicted here with an open book in her hands, fully engaged in reading to her students. This generous act of dedication signifies the daily opportunities that learning brings to Marist students, opening the gateway to a world of future possibilities, each thriving on meaningful relationships. The gift of reading symbolises the transformative power of education and its spiritual values and traditions, which form the foundation of the Marist Sisters' philosophy, Marist Women of Action.

The senior student, exploring the map, seeks guidance and wise discernment from Jeanne-Marie. The dynamic connection between them is evident, characterized by their shared pursuit of knowledge and the confident arm of Jeanne-Marie. Similarly, the senior student, with her arm resting reassuringly on her sister's shoulder, captures a sense of genuine affection and belonging, while the younger sister responds with a look of admiration and trust. The three women are gathered around our Marist Compass, symbolizing courage, compassion, and gifts.

The Jeanne-Marie Chavoin (JMC) sculpture is strategically positioned on Futuna Terrace, allowing students the daily opportunity to make a passing "touch" or acknowledge Jeanne-Marie in reflection and prayer. Within the college, Jeanne-Marie stands as a visual reminder of the Marist Sisters' vision for the education and empowerment of young women. Her welcoming presence invites students and staff to unite and gather regularly, inspiring them to make individual and collective contributions to the college and wider community, thereby developing their unique Marist 'compass for life'.

The sculpture commemorates Australian geologist and astrobiologist Dr Abigail Allwood.

Dr Abigail Allwood works at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in the United States of America and studies stromatolites, detection of life on other planets, and evolution of life on early Earth. Her early work gained notability for finding evidence of life in 3.45 billion year old stromatolites in the Pilbara formation in Australia. She is now a principal investigator on the Mars Rover 2020 team searching for evidence of life on Mars using the Planetary Instrument for X-Ray Lithochemistry (PIXL).  She is the first female and first Australian principal investigator on a NASA Mars mission.

Allwood grew up in Brisbane, and was inspired by Carl Sagan and his description of the Voyager missions in the series Cosmos.  She went on to accomplish an undergraduate degree in geosciences, and completed her PhD at Macquarie University in New South Wales in 2006.  During her PhD, she published on 3.45 billion years old stromatolites in the Pilbara formation, describing the diversity of early life on the Archean Earth.

Description
A bronze statue of Australian netball icon Anne Henderson has been unveiled at the State Netball Hockey Centre in a fitting tribute.

It’s difficult to describe the history of Victorian netball without mentioning Anne Henderson. One of the game’s pioneers, a statue of Anne now stands next to the entrance of the State Netball Hockey Centre in Royal Park – a venue of particular significance to Anne. It’s a fitting tribute to her lifetime commitment to the sport both on and off the court.

Born in 1904 in Benalla, Anne’s love of netball started while she was at primary school and continued while working as a teacher in regional Victoria.
Anne’s nephew John Henderson said her dedication to the teaching and development of children combined with her love of netball created a safe and welcoming space for young women to play sport.
‘Although Anne never had children, she had no shortage of children in her life through her role as a primary school teacher and her enduring interest and commitment to netball as a player, administrator and mentor, particularly in Melbourne,’ said John.
Anne had a knack for identifying and nurturing talent. She helped develop up and coming players, advocated for girls and women and governed the sport. She often provided the tram fare from her own pocket for many girls so they could travel and play at Royal Park.

In recognition of her outstanding contribution, she was inducted as a Netball Victoria Life Member in 1939, a Victorian Netball State Council region was named in her honour in 1990 and she was posthumously elevated to the Hall of Fame in 1998.

Anne’s statue has been created by renowned Australian-based sculpture artists Gillie and Marc, co-founders of Statues for Equality, a global movement to balance gender and racial representation in public statues. The statue is co-funded by the Victorian Government's Celebrating Female Sporting Icons initiative.
This is the second statue created as part of this important initiative. 
These statues are a standing reminder for greater representation and recognition of women and girls in sport and recreation.

Australian netball legend, Sharelle McMahon, has had her legacy and contribution to the sport immortalised in bronze, with a statue unveiled today outside Victoria’s home of netball – John Cain Arena.

Minister for Tourism, Sport and Major Events, Steve Dimopoulos unveiled the statue, which was co-funded and created by Australian-based, internationally renowned sculptors Gillie and Marc – co-founders of Statues for Equality, a global movement to balance gender and racial representation in public statues.

“Recognising our female sporting heroes will help level the playing field and inspire the next generation of elite sporting talent,” said Minister for Tourism, Sport and Major Events, Steve Dimopoulos.

“Victorians, like the sports we play are diverse and it’s important that the athletes we choose to honour reflect that diversity.”

Originally born in Bamawm in regional Victoria, Ms McMahon remains an icon of the game with her illustrious netball career spanning 25 years as both a player and coach, amassing a long list of outstanding achievements.

She represented Melbourne Phoenix and later Melbourne Vixens as a player more than 200 times and at age 21, she made her debut for the Australian Diamonds.

McMahon went on to captain Australia 12 times in an international career that spanned 14 years and 118 matches, including two gold and two silver medals across four Commonwealth Games and two Netball World Cup victories, even scoring the winning goal at the 1999 World Cup.

She was the first athlete from a team sport selected as flagbearer for the 2010 Commonwealth Games opening ceremony and in 2016 was inducted as an athlete member of the Sport Australia Hall of Fame.

Ms McMahon continues to be a commanding presence in sport, working as Cricket Victoria’s Head of Female Cricket since December 2021.

A second statue is set to be unveiled later in the year as part of the Statues for Equality project honouring fellow netball icon, Anne Henderson at the redeveloped State Netball Centre in Parkville.

In the First World War 136,000 “walers” (the general name applied to Australian horses abroad) were sent overseas for use by the Australian Imperial Force and the British and Indian governments. Only one horse from the 136,000 made it back to Australia. His name was Sandy. 

Sandy belonged to Major General Sir William Bridges, who was killed in battle at Gallipoli. A gentle bay standing 16 hands high, he was the Major’s favourite charger and it was his dying wish to have his beloved horse returned home to Australia to enjoy a long and happy retirement.

When the Major died, Sandy was put into the care of Captain Leslie Whitfield and was transported to Egypt then onto France in March 1916. It wasn’t until the following year that the Australian authorities were able to honour the Major’s dying wish and granted Sandy a safe passage to return home to Australia.

The big bay lived out his days munching on green grass at Maribyrnong in Melbourne’s west near Highpoint, around a place named Remount Hill near the Maribyrnong River, where many thousands of horses including Sandy, had earlier begun their long one-way journey.

Description
Fred Tracey was one of the foremost promoters and pioneers of Sprint car racing in Australia, and contributed much to the Australian speedway during the 1950s. Tracey took on management of the nearby Kirjon Speedway in 1951 renaming it Tracey’s Speedway, located near Highpoint in Maribyrnong Reserve, off Raleigh Road. Under his management and with wife Beryl, the track went on to become one of Australia’s top venues hosting a range of Australian and overseas star performers.

Like all speedways, the track was famous for many memorable moments including an event in 1953 where Tracey was lucky to escape serious injury during the Speedcar Butchers’ Picnic, where a car bounced off the fence at 70mph, and missed Tracey by mere centimetres. 

The main grandstand for the speedway still exists on the edge of the Maribyrnong Reserve, with the Victorian Classic & Vintage Speedway Club hosting an annual Tracey’s Speedway Reunion each year.

Australian-based, internationally renowned sculpture artists Gillie and Marc have  immortalised club legends Cameron Smith and Billy Slater in statue, thanks to the Victorian Government. Over 25 years, Gillie and Marc have developed a worldwide reputation for delivering quality private and public artworks. Their work can be found in major art galleries and public sites in more than 250 cities around the world, including their recent production of 10 sculptures of the world’s most inspirational women set in New York City, featuring Oprah Winfrey, Jane Goodall, Nicole Kidman, Cate Blanchett and P!nk.

Smith and Slater each boast a long list of outstanding achievements reflecting the amazing and dominant athletes they are and their remarkable resilience at the top of the game over long and distinguished careers. The statues recognise and celebrate the successful careers of both players, immortalising them in sporting history and helping to inspire the next generation of Victorian rugby league players and supporters.

Billy Slater is recognised as one of the all-time great rugby league fullbacks to play the game, having played more than 300 games for Storm. He is a dual premiership player and Clive Churchill Medallist, a Dally M Medallist and ranks second for the greatest number of tries scored by any player in NRL history. Slater represented the Queensland Maroons 31 times in State of Origin and the Australian Kangaroos 30 times in internationals. 

Cameron Smith has been captain of Melbourne Storm since 2006 and has led the team to seven grand finals and Queensland to a record 12 State of Origin titles in 13 years. He has won every individual and collective honour in the game and along the way has broken the record for the most points scored by any player in NRL history and most games played in the NRL, having reached 400 matches in 2019. 

The Victorian Government is partnering with Melbourne & Olympic Parks Trust, Melbourne Storm and the National Rugby League to deliver the statues, which will be engineered in bronze right here in Melbourne and are expected to be unveiled during the 2020 NRL season.

At the beginning of the 1967 season, Hudson made the move to Hawthorn, where he would go onto play 129 games and boot 727 goals.

Gillie and Marc were commissioned to immortalise beloved former Australia captain, Ricky Ponting, who was born and bred in Tasmania.Beyond Ponting’s renowned cricket skills, his foundation dedicated to helping young Australian’s and their families beat cancer, called Ponting Foundation shows a level of character at the epitome of selflessness, empathy, and kindness. Ricky has used his profile to influence widespread engagement to raise important funds for specific charity programs in the fight against cancer in Australia’s young people. There are few people worthier of a monumental bronze sculpture, to inspire an entire community. To Pointing’s absolutely delight, he unveiled a statue of himself before the first Test against the West Indies in 2015. The artists have aptly portrayed Australia’s highest-run scorer mid-play, performing his famous pull shot. This signature stroke sent fear into bowlers around the world and was used in over 168 tests during is 170year-long career. Cate Blanchett is an internationally acclaimed and award-winning actress, producer, humanitarian, and dedicated member of the arts community. In recognition of her continued advocacy for the arts and support of humanitarian and environmental causes, Blanchett has been awarded the Companion of the Order of Australia in the General Division; the Centenary Medal for Service to Australian Society through Acting; and the Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French Minister of Culture.

 She also holds Honorary Doctorates of Letters from the University of New South Wales, the University of Sydney, and Macquarie University. Blanchett is equally accomplished and celebrated on the stage, having led the Sydney Theatre Company as Co-Artistic Director and CEO for six years alongside Andrew Upton. Three-time Olympic gold medallist, Gabby Douglas is an American artistic gymnast, noted for her trailblazing performances in individual all-around and team competitions. In 2012, she was named female athlete of the year for her landmark sporting achievements.

Perhaps the world’s most noted conservationist, Dame Jane Morris Goodall DBE is an English primatologist, anthropologist, and the world’s foremost expert on chimpanzees. Founder of the Jane Goodall Institute, Goodall is well regarded for the many decades of study she has done on social and family interactions of wild chimpanzees.

Unheard of at the time, Goodall began her solo study of endangered chimps in 1960 in Tanzania, despite having no collegiate training. Doing this resulted in Goodall observing the chimps in a subversive manner, publishing revolutionary findings, and becoming the only human to be accepted into a chimpanzee society.

Humanitarian, scholar, educator, and author, Dr Tererai Trent is one of the world’s most internationally recognized voices for quality education and women’s empowerment. Distinguished as Oprah Winfrey’s “All-time favorite guest”, Trent is a prominent activist for equal rights to education, her contribution to this cause was born from her own fight against adversity.

Trent was born in Zimbabwe (formally Rhodesia) when poverty, war, and traditional women’s roles denied women the opportunity to attend school.
