1. Why Gillie and Marc has collaborated with The Brunswick, how that began, and how the artists decided to get involved working with The Brunswick.

 The Brunswick in the heart of London is so much more than just a shopping centre. An establishment of the city, locals and tourists flock to the centre for their eclectic shopping options and exciting events. A safe space for everyone, The Brunswick hosts’ community events for all ages, backgrounds, and interests. From multicultural events such as a Bollywood night to an exhibition of fun and artistic sculptures of superheroes, The Brunswick gives the opportunity for everyone in the community to come together, learn about different cultures and interests, and have fun.

This inclusivity is a big reason why Gillie and Marc decided that The Brunswick would be a wonderful organisation to partner with. The artist’s sculptures promote understanding and openness, the key ingredients for a more loving and accepting community. The sculpture that they will be installing at The Brunswick is part of the broader project ‘Travel Everywhere With Love’. This is a global art project that is re-uniting the world with openness, unity, understanding and love. Understanding the significance of the travelling hybrid duo depicted in the sculptures, Rabbitwoman and Dogman, those who come across them will know that the hosting location believes in peace, harmony, and progress, which is exactly what The Brunswick stand for.

2013 Installed permanently on the corner of Vincent and Beaufort St Perth Perth’s Beaufort Street represents the city’s artistic flair. After winning a tender for a street sculpture, Gillie and Marc were able to cement their artwork right onto the road itself, among the cars. Tandem Riders ticks all the council-requested boxes. “Local councils need public art that engages the community, brings together different constituents, and sends a message about the area,” says Marc. “This bike addresses the city’s environmental concerns, and the characters represent diversity – they appeal to all races, genders, and identities in a universal way.” Children in particular love to climb onto Rabbitwoman’s lap and help her steer the bike. Rabbitwoman is also taking a photo and when passersby see her camera it works as a reminder that this is a place worth remembering. Visitors then snap their own shots of the vibrant area.

Acquired by Woollahra Council for permanent display in Paddington, Sydney. This sculpture is installed on the corner of Glenmore Road and Cascade Street for all to enjoy.

Gillie and Marc believe art should be seen and enjoyed by as many people as possible. The artists also want their Dogman and Rabbitwoman characters to resonate with the community, and they’ve been successful at achieving this. In 2011, Gillie and Marc jumped at the chance to be a part of Woollahra Council’s Public Art Program – an initiative for artists to give public spaces a creative makeover. It Takes Two perfectly embodies the culture of Paddington, the Sydney Suburb a part of Woollahra council. “Paddington is an inner city urban community, where car parking is difficult and coffee shops are plentiful,” said Marc. “So our Dogman and Rabbitwoman are on a Vespa drinking a cappuccino. They represent the archetypal Paddington couple.” In fact, the portrayal is so spot-on that locals love to dress them up, while visitors enjoy getting their photo taken with the creative couple.

Featured in 2012 Sculptures By the Sea, Bondi Now installed permanently at McClelland Gallery & Sculpture Park, VIC Each year in Sydney an outdoor sculpture exhibition called Sculpture by the Sea takes place for four weeks along the coastal walk of Bondi and Tamarama. Gillie and Marc have been a part of this festival twice now and have taken out awards for their artworks that have been seen by over a half million people In 2012, the artists created The Travellers Have Arrived for the event. The festival director’s response was that it was “brilliantly modelled” and a highlight for many visitors. “Bondi is a pilgrimage,” Marc says “Backpackers from around the world flock there to call it home. The characters were inspired by Mary and Joseph. So the sculpture represents Bondi as a modern-day Bethlehem.” The Travellers Have Arrived exemplifies the way art can make us feel small. These artworks remind us that we’re just like everyone else, we’re never alone in our travels – whether they’re across the world or across town for coffee. We’re all just ants in an ant farm. The Travellers Have Arrived is now on permanent exhibition at the McClelland Sculpture Park in Langwarrin, Victoria. The McClelland Sculpture Park is Australia’s leading sculpture park, and an innovative space for contemporary sculpture to be shown.

Tell me a little bit about “The Travellers Have Arrived”? How was it made? What does it mean to you? How did it end up in Las Vegas?
’The Travellers Have Arrived’ was a piece we originally created for the renowned outdoor sculpture exhibition, ‘Sculpture by the Sea’ in Sydney, Australia in 2012. The original location, Bondi, is like a pilgrimage for travellers from all around the world searching for surf, adventure, and a place to call home. Expertly crafted from silicon bronze, the characters of the sculpture were inspired by Mary and Joseph on their famous pilgrimage, turning Bondi into a modern day Bethlehem. The sculpture reminds us that we’re just like everyone else, we’re never alone in our travels, whether that takes us across the world or across town for a coffee ’The Travellers Have Arrived’ was moved to New York City where it lived for two years, but The Cosmopolitan had their eye on it. After conversations with the hotel, we decided that Las Vegas and The Cosmopolitan were a wonderful location for ‘The Travellers’ to move on to.

What makes this public art a good fit for Las Vegas and The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas?
When The Cosmopolitan approached us with their desire to have the sculpture moved to their hotel, we realised it would be a great fit. Welcoming other travellers from all across the world to one of the top tourist destinations, ‘The Travellers Have Arrived’ would become a welcoming and comforting sight to all who are seeking comfort and companionship while away from their home. Just like it was for Bondi, Las Vegas would become the modern day Bethlehem. As a luxury hotel, The Cosmopolitan is a great fit, tying in with the luxurious qualities of bronze and the stylish and innovative concept of the design. 

Were there any unique challenges in bringing this to/installing this in Las Vegas?
Yes, the distance the sculpture had to be transported and the weight of it. The sculpture weighs one tonne worth of bronze, so it is very heavy. This created a logistical challenge with a distance of 2,232 miles to cover from New York City to Las Vegas.

Being a married couple, what are some of the challenges/advantages of working together?
We are incredibly lucky to work as a couple because we believe we are soul mates. We have lived and worked side by side for the past 27 years and it has been absolutely wonderful. We spark creativity within each other and encourage one another to push ourselves out of our comfort zones. We have had the most wonderful experiences, such as travelling to Kenya to meet and study the final three white rhinos, which we then created a hugely successful public sculpture to promote the struggles of these beautiful animals. It is wonderful to work as a team and we would not change it for the world.

It is fantastic that public art is becoming more accessible. Public art makes a city richer in terms of history, culture, and beauty. It is a wonderful way of telling a story or giving an important message. It can tell the history of the city, or showcase what is important for the people. Having this story told in a way that millions of people can access on a regular basis shows the importance of these messages and sparks conversations and passion on a scale that a work in a gallery could never invoke. We have been using our sculpture projects to try to contribute to the change we want to see in the world. By showcasing important issues such as conservation and gender equality, we are planting the seed for change into the minds of all who see them, a seed that could eventually blossom into activism and change.

Exhibited as part of The Harbour Sculpture Prize, July 30 - August 9, 2015, Deckhouse & Clarkes Point Reserve, Woolwich Exhibited on Woollomooloo Wharf, Sydney Exhibited at Jing'an Sculpture Park, Beijing Permanently located at Circle on Cavill Shopping Centre, Surfers Paradise Beach, QLD Gillie and Marc have spent the last 15 years based in Sydney, a city famous for its gorgeous surf beaches. The artists’ son, Ben, is an avid surfer. As a family they would hit the beach frequently to watch him catch waves. They found it absolutely mesmerising. The Wave Riders is a tribute to the lost art of tandem surfing. It was picked for display for the 2015 Sydney Harbour Sculpture Prize and was installed in Sydney’s Woolloomooloo Wharf for three months in the beginning of 2016. Surfing is a surprisingly social sport. Gillie and Marc also created The Wave Riders in the spirit of doing things together. Tandem surfing might have gone out of fashion in the sixtiese but these wave riders are perfectly in tune with each other, and able to find balance despite the odds. The sculpture is making waves around the world and has found a home both in the stunning luxury resort, Mantra Circle on Cavill in Surfers Paradise and the Jing'An Sculpture Park in Shanghai — the world’s biggest outdoor sculpture exhibition.

In 'Baby you can ride my bike' Gillie and Marc's iconic characters, Dogman and Rabbitgirl, are depicted sipping cappuccino on a Vespa in a similar pose to their work 'It takes two' which is on permanent public display in Paddington. That particular sculpture has become so beloved by locals that it's frequently dressed up for holidays and special occasions, and has become one of the most photographed spots in the area. 'Baby you can ride my bike' is in fibreglass and high gloss red paint - one of Gillie and Marc's signature styles made famous by their Lost Dog series. Gillie and Marc use their art to tell their own remarkable love story, and to comment on the way humans interact with the world and deny or embrace their animal instincts. The artists choose to depict Dogman and Rabbitgirl, the ultimate odd couple, enjoying simple pleasures like drinking coffee to suggest that through embracing some of our more animalistic qualities we might all be able to find genuine happiness in the simple things. The Vespa has become a consistent motif in Gillie and Marc's work as it symbolises the spirit of adventure, travel and freedom that we all have in us.

Description
Leaping and darting through the foamy surf is a friendly dolphin, racing the lovers to the shore. Gillie and Marc created the original Wave Riders as a tribute to what some might say is the lost art of tandem surfing and the spirit of doing things together. It was picked for display at last year’s Harbour Sculpture Prize and now can be found at Woolloomooloo wharf. Tandem surfing might have gone out of fashion in the 60s but these Wave Riders are perfectly in tune with each other, and able to find balance despite the odds. Gillie and Marc’s iconic hybrid characters, Dogman and Rabbitgirl, represent the ultimate odd couple – two individuals who love each other even though they don’t fit into the outside world’s expectations. They tell the artists’ own true love story and reflect their belief in embracing the diversity of relationship experiences.

Description
Rabbitwoman and Dogman had soared through the skies on one of their most unusual adventures. As they glided they noticed something quite strange, a cloud formation that looks remarkably like stairs. On closer inspection they discovered this was exactly what it was. They had found the stairway to heaven. Climbing over they began their decesent. To them, heaven was back down on the ground.
