Description
When Gillie was five years old she lived in Africa and witnessed an elephant being shot before her eyes. This image has had a profound effect on all our work, and protection of animals is a constant theme in all our work. The African women told stories from the past when elephants were so great in numbers they fell from the sky. The truth is in 1930 there were 10 million elephants in Africa. Today that number is less that 400,000. This sculptures plays with gravity and what is possible and what is not. By playing with the impossible we hope that the viewer will realize what it takes to save elephants. Together we do everything we can to protect wildlife.

Description
After one year of preparation, hundreds of sponsors, and two huge days of installation, the world’s largest rhino sculpture, Shandu, the Buried Rhino was placed on Sydney’s famous Tamarama Beach as part of the Sculpture by the Sea exhibition in 2016. “Shandu means change in South Africa and this was one rhino who lived up to his name,” Marc says. Shandu has now been installed into Monarto Zoo, the world’s largest open-range zoo. “We’re thrilled that Shandu has found his new home in Monarto Zoo,” Marc says. Shandu can be found soaking up in the rays in a gorgeous spot outside the visitor centre situated between the chimps and yellow-footed rock wallabies. “Monarto is a very rhino-focused place,” Gillie explains. “They even have a rhino for a logo so we know he will be very happy there next to his chimp and wallaby friends.” Not only did millions of visitors come to see Shandu but thousands of photos were uploaded to social media. Shandu won both the Allen's People’s Choice Award and Kids' Choice Award. This is only the third time in the 20-year history of Sculpture by the Sea Bondi that an artwork has been awarded both, as voted by the public. Gillie and Marc donated all their prize money to The Australian Rhino Project (ARP). The ARP aims to relocate 80 endangered Southern White Rhinoceros to Australia in an effort to safeguard the species. Besides nationwide media coverage, Shandu received worldwide media exposure from publications including the UK’s Telegraph and BBC UK. Every single TV channel in Australia featured Shandu too. All this press meant the ARP were flooded with calls of offer to volunteer. The artists managed to raise a massive $17,000 altogether to go towards the ARP.

Description
Exhibited at Federation Square 6 January–14 March 2014 Run for your life is now permanently gifted to Latrobe University and exhibited at the Bundoora campus. The work will still remain part of the Wonderment Walk and will be promoted and programmed by both organisations.Transport yourself to the African savanna by visiting a stunning trio of bronze rhinos in the Square. Following their hugely popular Paparazzi Dogs exhibition, public artists Gillie and Marc return to Fed Square with another collection of inspiring sculptures. Titled Run for your Life, the work features three magnificent rhino sculptures that invite the public to be part of their run for freedom and life. The first rhino is ridden by Gillie and Marc's iconic hybrid dogman and rabbitwoman characters and the smaller rhinos are there for everyone to jump on! This remarkable installation brings the call of the wild to the city and to the people of Melbourne who already have a strong moral and environmental concern. Nearly 700 rhinos have been killed in South Africa in 2013 making it the bloodiest year yet for rhino poaching. Gillie and Marc's sculptures hope to raise public awareness of the plight of rhino species in the wild. Now critically endangered, rhinos desperately need the active involvement of everyone to save their lives. Gillie and Marc hope everyone who sets foot in Fed Square can feel a connection to the three sculptures that spell out the rhinos future. The bronze rhinos are the latest public works to be commissioned by Fed Square's Creative Program. Photos by William Watt.
