About the Penguin
Endangered penguins are among the most vulnerable seabirds on the planet, facing a growing number of threats from both natural and human causes. Species such as the African penguin, Galápagos penguin, and yellow-eyed penguin have seen dramatic population declines in recent decades. One of the biggest challenges they face is the loss of food sources due to overfishing, which reduces the availability of small fish like anchovies and sardines that penguins depend on. Climate change also plays a major role, as warming ocean temperatures shift fish populations and melt the ice habitats critical for breeding and nesting. In addition, oil spills, pollution, and habitat destruction from coastal development further endanger their fragile ecosystems. Many penguins are also threatened by introduced predators such as rats and cats that attack their eggs and chicks. Without stronger conservation actions—like marine protected areas, sustainable fishing practices, and habitat restoration—these iconic birds may continue to decline, endangering not only their species but the balance of the marine environments they help sustain.

With less access to prey, polar bears face malnutrition, lower reproductive rates, and increased mortality.
