Description When the fires raged in Australia at an unprecedented rate, the wombats were some of the lucky ones who could scurry down into their burrows to escape the flames. But escaping the flames is one thing, surviving the fires is completely different. As the wombats emerged from their burrows, they found a landscape that had been decimated, devoid of any food and shelter, leaving them just as vulnerable as their fellow animals who had to outrun the flames. As part of the series ‘Come out for a better tomorrow’, this wombat is climbing out of a manhole, forcing us to remember its existence and asking us to work together to save it. This sculpture series calls for awareness of our impact on the world and to allow every living creature the right to feel safe and loved.
What started as an entry to the prolific sculpture event, Sculpture By The Sea in Sydney 2018, turned into a global phenomenon. With many different endangered animals tentatively popping out of manholes in the ground, ‘Come out come out wherever you are’ drew attention to all the animals of the world who are dying because of humans. By bringing a reminder to people who would not usually see them, this sculpture calls for greater awareness of our impact on the beautiful creatures of the world and calls for everyone to allow every living creature the right to feel safe. The sculpture won the Allen’s People’s Choice Award in Sydney, with over 1 million votes cast. People all around the world identified with the sculptures and wanted to be a part of better tomorrow.
Now, Gillie and Marc are continuing with their dream of creating a better tomorrow through art. By extending the idea of the original sculpture, Gillie and Marc are now creating more and more of their manhole creations. With not only endangered animals popping out of the manholes, Gillie and Marc have also extended this to all living things; animals, trees, and even Dogman! Everyone, whether that be humans, animals, young or old, should feel welcomed, feel safe, and be accepted. There should be no reason to hide from the world. Everything is important and should be protected and loved.

Description This creature is so bizarre that when scientists first went to examine it they thought it must be a hoax! This crazy creature is only found in Australia and is a semiaquatic, egg-laying mammal. Egg-laying mammals are known as monotremes and are some of the very few mammals that do not give birth to live young. Listed as near threatened, these crazy creatures are luckier than some. They are protected in Australia so they have managed to avoid the worst of human activity. Yet habitat loss from human expansion, water pollution, and climate change is still a very real threat. As part of the series ‘Come out for a better tomorrow’, this platypus is climbing out of a manhole, forcing us to remember its existence and asking us to work together to save it. This sculpture series calls for awareness of our impact on the world and to allow every living creature the right to feel safe and loved.

Description The Tasmanian Tiger, also known as the thylacine, was a carnivorous marsupial endemic to Australia, Tasmania, and New Guinea. It was the largest known carnivorous marsupial of modern times, and had distinctive tiger-like stripes on its lower back. The Tasmanian Tiger was unfortunately hunted to extinction in the early 20th century, but its striking appearance and mysterious reputation continue to capture the imaginations of people around the world. This is a reminder of what we have lost and how fragile our natural world is.

Description It’s an unforgettable moment, to see the immense tail of a whale. For a fraction of a moment, this monumental ‘Y’ rises above the shimmering water before disappearing back into the depths. Beneath the sparkling surface of the great blue are all kinds of creatures. They hold the secrets of the history of our planet. But, growing larger than even the dinosaurs, the whales are perhaps the most important of them all.
Whales have captured our imaginations for centuries. But back in the day, we were doing most of the catching. In the late 18th century, whaling really found its stride. Huge numbers of whales were killed every year to fuel the Industrial Revolution. Whale oil was needed to lubricate all these new machines and factories, and also to light the homes of everyday people. Whales were also exploited for all kinds of goods, such as soap, perfume, clothing, and fish hooks as well as being a source of food.
With the Industrial Revolution came technological advancements. The 19th century brought exploding harpoons and steam-powered ships, allowing whalers to kill whales at an extraordinary rate. By the mid-20th century, most species of large whales were on the brink.
But hope was on the horizon. In 1982, the International Whaling Commission voted to ban commercial whaling. In 1986, this came into effect, and since then, many species and populations have rebounded. But not all.
There are still so many threats to whales today, even more so than before. The biggest culprits are climate change, bycatch/entanglement in fishing gear, plastic pollution, noise pollution, chemical pollution, and ship strikes. These threats affect different species differently as well as different populations. This makes whale conservation incredibly difficult.
Even with decades of protection, whales are very at risk. Currently, six out of the 13 great whale species are classified either as endangered or vulnerable. It’s estimated that 300,000 whales and dolphins are killed every single year because of bycatch. And that’s a conservative estimate. Despite conservation efforts, the North Atlantic right whale declined by 30% in the past 10 years. With only 366 left, this species is in serious trouble.
We all must become whale protectors. Whales are at the top of the food chain and are crucial for the health of the entire marine ecosystem. They are keystone species, important species that make a major difference to their environment. When whale populations plummeted, everyone suffered. Although counterintuitive, even their prey was negatively impacted. There became fewer krill and fish, despite their apex predator being gone. This goes against the Japanese government's argument that whaling is good for fish production. Protecting whales is also one of the best ways to mitigate climate change. Whales have an incredible part to play in capturing and storing carbon. Their huge biomass can store far more carbon than any other creature. And when they die, they sink, taking almost all that carbon down to the seabed, ultimately removing it from the carbon cycle.
Their poo is also the secret ingredient to creating the best carbon storage system in the world! Incredibly nutrient-rich, their poo works as a fertiliser in shallow waters. This is where the phytoplankton lives. Phytoplankton are the plants of the ocean and contribute over 50% of the oxygen in our atmosphere. They also capture around 37 billion tons of carbon dioxide each year. This is the equivalent of four Amazon rainforests. Whales are crucial for taking their nutrient-rich poop to nutrient-poor waters, transporting these precious nutrients to what would be desolate parts of the ocean and breaking up the layers of the ocean as they swim. Really, the oceans would be lost without whales.
For many people, as soon as the ban on commercial whaling came into action they believed everything was sorted. We had stopped hunting them so they’ll be fine now! This, sadly, is not the case. We must put the spotlight back on whale conservation and inspire the world to protect

But underneath all that, koalas love to live close to one another, and form a complex network through which they can contact any family member at any time. So while koalas don’t form families in the same way we might, they rely heavily on their relatives to support and help them. Through it all, they stick together.

Description Koalas are marsupials, which mainly means their young are born before they are ready to live in the outside world. So when this koala joey was born, still an embryo, she would have instinctively headed for her mama’s pouch. There she would have stayed for six months, suckling constantly. When she was strong enough to survive outside the pouch and start eating eucalyptus leaves, she would have left her mama’s pouch and clambered onto her back, which is how we find this mother and daughter, making their way through their eucalyptus forest.

Description They say laughter is the best medicine, and kookaburras have it in spades. Their laughing call is a lovely reminder to take a break, find the lighter side of life and not take things too seriously all the time. But kookaburras also demonstrate that we should work as hard as we play. Mating for life, these birds pair off and then share incubation duties of their eggs, and then share feeding and caring duties of their hatchlings. This equal partnership between all kookaburras in caring for future generations is something each of us can aspire to.

Description Lewis, the koala that was heroically saved by Toni Doherty and taken to an animal hospital during the Australian bushfires, passed away on November 26, 2019. The Port Macquarie Koala Hospital was caring for Lewis. They made the decision to euthanize him after caring for and inspecting his severe burns from the fires. “(Our) number one goal is animal welfare, so it was on those grounds that this decision was made,” the hospital said, according to CNN. They estimated that Lewis was 14 years old.
Gillie and Marc want to make sure that Lewis is memorialized. Lewis will be shown to the world in bronze, wrapped in bandages and sitting on top of a eucalyptus stump.
The artists hope the statutes bring more awareness to the fires, climate change, and koalas. Artist Marc said of the fires in an emailed statement, “This is a terrifying example of the effects of climate change and how destructive it can be. The fires are not just a problem for Australia, they are a global problem.” Marc and Gillie are known for their public sculptures that help spread love, equality and conservation.
Koalas have been severely affected by the fires. Some estimates say their habitats in Australia have been 80% destroyed. Gillie said in an emailed press release of the koala, “It is so upsetting that an animal so important to the Australian identity is threatened with extinction. We want the whole world to come together to help us make sure this adorable creature will always have a home to come back to.”

Description This possum family is having a great time exploring their garden surrounds, scampering among the rocks and long grass and peering quizzically at the passers-by. They’re comfortable here because of their highly adaptable nature, and have learnt to live among the humans that have encroached on their space. Like their koala cousins, possums have learnt to feed on poisonous eucalyptus leaves, which means they’re rarely without food. Unlike koalas and many other marsupials, possums live in groups, just like this little family of three.

Description Diprotodon is classified as “megafauna” and is more affectionately known as a giant wombat. It is the largest marsupial ever to live and first existed 1.6 million years ago. In 2011, a diprotodon skeleton called Kenny was found in Eulo in outback Queensland. Kenny is one of the largest and best-preserved megafauna skeletons ever discovered.
Gillie and Marc were commissioned by Paroo Shire Council to recreate Kenny in bronze. The artists worked with paleontologists from Queensland Museum to use Kenny’s bones to recreate a biologically accurate, life-sized bronze sculpture. The bronze statue has helped create Paroo as a destination to learn about fossils and mega fauna in general. In fact, on the Outback Queensland website it lists the statue as the number one tourist site above mud springs, air raid shelters and rivers.

Description Gillie and Marc have gone through a lot of change and growth during their expansive career. They like to try new things and are always up for a challenge. But one thing that has remained steady and constant is their passion for animal conservation. The artists created Now and Forever for Tasmania’s Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary. The sculpture is a showcase for three endangered species – the Tasmanian devil, the Eastern quoll and the Tasmanian bettong – who desperately need protection. “The director of the wildlife sanctuary came to us and explained how much danger these animals were in,” says Gillie. “He commissioned three sculptures because his goal is to do something about the ignorance concerning these near-extinct animals, and their importance to Australia.” The artists chose to have the three animals cuddling and hiding behind one another as a way to highlight their vulnerabilities. What we do for these beautiful creatures today, will impact their lives forever.

Description The world’s oldest and largest koala sanctuary, Lone Pine, is now home to 130 koalas and over 100 species of native animals. Gillie and Marc created Cuddles as a way for students and adults to connect with these lovable creatures while enhancing the sanctuary’s nurturing environment. A koala is difficult to recreate, but Cuddles is extremely lifelike and has been well-received by both the young and young-at-heart.
