Description
Just like us, chimps can find the funny side to things. It is a natural behaviour and young chimps typically start to display this behaviour between 12 to 16 weeks. Laughing is a sign of empathy and is considered to show intelligence. This has disproved a quote by Aristotle that “only the human animal laughs.” It is important to understand these diverse emotions in other animals to know that it is not just us who feel.
When looking at the facial composition during laughter the muscles of a chimp and ourselves are very similar. This could tell us that laughter evolved from our common ancestor with our smiles evolving 5 million years ago!
