Description This resin sculpture Nyani, the reclining gorilla is a small version of the larger King Nyani in New York. We all know the story of King Kong, the gargantuan gorilla who snatches the beautiful woman and carries her up the empire state building with terrifying roars. We all know this version of terror and aggression, but so few of us know the truth behind the real-life gorilla, and this is a problem. Now, the largest bronze gorilla statue in the world is making its way to NYC, and this time the people of New York will get a second chance to save him and all of the endangered gorillas of the world, changing the narrative and becoming the champions of all gorillas.
Inspired by the film, Gillie and Marc Schattner the world-renowned public artists are working alongside the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund to bring another version of King Kong’s story to the streets of New York. With the creation of a monumental bronze public sculpture entitled King Nyani, Swahili for gorilla, the artists are bringing the gigantic gorilla back to the city, but this time with love. In a trip to Uganda, the artists were able to see a family of mountain gorillas in the wild and were moved to tears at the loving family unit. Their sculpture is based on the head of the family, a dominant silverback gorilla. The artists were blown away by the level of empathy and kindness he had, a very different image of the scary gorilla that is so often portrayed in media. “It was beautiful watching the silverback interacting with his family. He was so gentle and loving and clearly cared deeply for his family”, Marc recalls. “We knew we had to let the world know about this loving and gentle side of gorillas. They are often so misunderstood and thought of as scary and dangerous animals. But if they were able to see the silverback, maybe they wouldn’t be so scared”, remarks Gillie.
Gorillas are one of our closest relatives sharing 98% of our DNA. They share many of the same behaviors as humans such as laughter and sadness. But there may be only 1000 mountain gorilla left in the wild and fewer than 3800 eastern lowland gorilla. Humans are the reason why. Illegal poaching, war and deforestation are making it harder and harder for this beautiful animal to survive. “We couldn’t sit back and do nothing when these amazing creatures that are genetically so similar to us are in danger”, said Marc. All gorillas are critically endangered and desperately need help. Now NYC will become the city to save them. King Nyani is bringing the call for all New Yorkers to save the new King Kong. King Nyani is the largest bronze gorilla sculpture in the world and gives an interactive experience unlike any other. With his hand large enough to fit 2-3 people, the public can get up close and personal with this gentle giant and fall in love with him. In the movie, Kong grabs the woman in his hand to possess her. Now all of NY is invited to sit in his hand and be a true friend. “We wanted to create a sculpture where the public could really get close to the silverback, both physically and emotionally. Being able to sit in his hand and look up to into his gentle face we hope they will fall in love and join the movement to save the gorillas” says Gillie.
King Nyani is the artist’s interpretation to represent all gorillas and is part of the broader ‘Love The Last’ project, a social movement driven by public art to raise awareness, funds and support for endangered animals across the world, encouraging people to take action before we lose these animals forever. As partners of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund, the installation will be using its platform to raise much-needed funds for the charity. An incredible organisation, they have managed to turn the numbers around, making the mountain gorilla one of the only wild ape populations to be increasing. King Nyani will be on display in Hudson Park, New York City on 24 August 2020.

Description This 2-year-old baby boy loves playing. He’s finally confident enough to spend a bit of time away from mum playing with his siblings and learning to climb. But he is worried. He has noticed that a lot of gorillas in his community have been getting sick and dying. And some are just disappearing! It seems to happen whenever a human comes close. He has been told to stay away from the humans, they might to catch him and keep him in a cage.
The smallest of all the gorilla, the Western Lowland Gorilla are the most widespread, found in the thick tropical rainforests of western and central Africa. These vegetarians spend a lot of their time eating their favourite foods; roots, shoots, fruit, wild celery, and tree bark and pulp. They are incredibly peaceful animals, living calm and nonviolent lives, except when they are provoked. When this happens, the dominant male can demonstrate his strength with a mighty display, standing on two-foot, charging, pounding his chest, hooting, and giving an almighty roar. Just like us, female gorillas usually give birth to just one baby at a time. These little ones are tiny and helpless, only weighing about four pounds, and are completely dependent on their mother. They cling to her fur for safety until about four months old when they learn to ride on her back. They will stay safely on mums back for the first 2-3 years of their lives, watching and learning and getting a lot of love from mum. As they get older, they will start to play, climbing trees, wrestling, chasing each other, and learning everything they need to know to be a good chimp. They are dependent on their mothers for up to 5 years.
Gorillas are some of the most intelligent animals in the world and can even learn sign language! Koko the gorilla shocked the world in the 1970s with her ability to learn and communicate in sign language. She mastered 1000 signs and was able to make statements of up to 8 words to let people know what she wanted or thought. Koko was also elevated to stardom when she adopted a kitten as a pet, a pet she had asked for, showing such care and love as if it were her own child. When her kitten died, she signed "Bad, sad, bad" and "Frown, cry, frown, sad, trouble" and was even heard making a sound similar to a human crying. Koko passed away in 2018.
The main threats for this gorilla are poaching and disease and it is estimated that their numbers have declined by over 65% in the past 20-25 years. Hunting the adults for bushmeat and the babies for pets is a big problem. In Northeast Congo alone, approximately 5% are killed each year because of this. Being so closely related to us in terms of DNA is also a big problem when it comes to disease. Central Africa has been struggling with the deadly Ebola virus for a long time and it’s not just humans affected. Gorillas and chimpanzee have been badly affected with estimates stating that one-third of wild gorilla populations, mostly made up of the western lowland gorilla, have been killed. One community, once considered one of the most important populations, the Minkébé Forest, have lost 90% of their population to Ebola.

Description At 10 years old this is the first time this female has become a mother, and she is very excited! Her baby is still completely dependent on her and she is willing to rise to the occasion, keeping her close and feeding her up so she can grow big and strong. But she’s worried. She knows her baby is very valuable to more than just her. The humans, who she seems to be meeting more and more frequently, see her baby with dollar signs in their eyes. She must stay close to her family silverback so he can protect them both. She will focus on showering her baby with love so she can grow up with only love in her heart.
One of the two subspecies of eastern gorillas and also one of the largest of all living primates, the mountain gorilla is a beautiful giant who shares 98% of our DNA. They can only be found in two places; a bit over half live in a home made up of extinct volcanoes bordering the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda and Uganda, the Virunga Mountains, the rest can be found in Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. High up in their forested mountains, these gorillas stay warm with the help of their thick fur, incredibly important when temperatures can drop below freezing. These gentle and shy animals live peaceful lives, avoiding conflict and preferring to focus on feeding on their favourite foods, mainly leaves and shoots and sometimes snails, ants and bark (a good source of sodium).
Mountain gorillas are very social, living in tight-knit family groups made up of females, infants, a few younger subordinate males, and one dominant male, the great silverback. The silverback is huge with a large silver saddle on the base of his back which he develops around the age of 12, giving him his name. His job is to protect his family. He will lead them to different spots to feed, mediate conflicts within the group, and protect them from outside threats such as leopards, other gorillas, or humans. He will do whatever it takes to protect his family, even if it means he will lose his own life. These incredible fathers are also often the ones who will take in orphans when their mother has died, providing them with lots of love and letting them sleep in his nest. Some have also been known to be able to remove snares from poachers from the hands and feet of his family.
Female mountain gorillas will often first give birth when she reaches the age of 10 and will continue to have children every 4 years or so. The babies are born completely helpless, weighing only 4 pounds. They develop in a very similar way to human babies but twice as fast! Everyone in the family plays a part in caring for them, giving them lots of hugs, kisses, playing with them, and carrying them around. They are weaned when they are 3 and they become more independent. When the gorillas reach maturity, most of the males (at age 11-13) and about 60% of the females (age 10-12) will leave their family to join another troop.
Mountain gorillas are very endangered with around 1,000 remaining in the wild. It was thought that they would become extinct by the end of the 20th century. But through hard work and incredible conservation work, the population of mountain gorillas grew. It is now the only gorilla species in the world to have an increasing population. There are still many threats to their survival. The biggest threat is habitat loss. As people move into their home, they clear the forests for agriculture and livestock, even in protected areas. This makes it harder for the gorillas to find food but also threatens their genetic diversity as groups become increasingly more isolated. Another major threat is war. The war in Rwanda in the ’90s and now the ongoing civil conflict in DRC have had a huge effect on the gorillas. With refugees fleeing to the Virunga Mountains, it causes habitat destruction, poaching, and also makes it very difficult for conservation workers to come in as rebels make it dangerous. This close contact with humans is also a problem for transfer of disease. With such similar DNA, mountain gorillas are susceptible to many of the same illnesses but do not have the same immunity. Mountain gorillas have been known to die from the common cold. Poaching is not so much of a threat but they are being killed for their heads, hands and feet which are sold to collectors and they are often caught in snares set for other animals. The infants are also being caught and sold to zoos, researchers, and as pets, fetching up to $5,000 on the black market. Artwork Features Gillie and Marc love working in bronze for many reasons. Bronze is a very hardy material and will last forever. As experts in coloring bronze, Gillie and Marc enjoy experimenting with their sculptures, adding a splash of color to brighten the work, making it even more unique. > Read more

Description This 25-year-old male is the head of his family. With his beautiful silver fur on his back, he is easily identified as their leader. Though he is big and strong and a force to be reckoned with, he is a peaceful leader. He prefers to live in harmony and empathy, making sure that everyone in his family is well cared for and protected. This gentle giant will go to any lengths to support his family and keep them from harm.
Also known as Grauer’s gorilla, the eastern lowland gorilla is the largest out of the four gorilla species and one of our closest relatives sharing 98% of our DNA. Their fur is jet black and the males develop beautiful silver fur on their backs as they mature, giving them the name silverback. They spend most of their time eating their favourite foods which include fruits, leaves, stems, bark, and on occasion small insects such as ants and termites.
Eastern lowland gorillas are very social and very peaceful animals. They live in groups, from 2 to over 40 members, mainly female and led by a dominant male. About a third of the groups have two full-grown males, creating a harem. Females and males reach sexual maturity at different ages: 8 years old for females and 12 years old for males. A mother will give birth to one baby at a time who she will breastfeed for about three years. The baby will stay close to its mother for protection even when they start to walk at 35 weeks old. They will stay with her for three or four years before finding their own community once they reach sexual maturity.
The numbers of eastern lowland gorilla are estimated to be around 3,800, a 50% decline since the 90s. However, it is difficult to know for sure because of the civil unrest that has been raging in the DRC for decades. The gorillas face many threats concerning this, their national parks having their funding cut, illegal mines being set up in their homes, and less monitoring making it easier for people to hunt gorillas for bushmeat. One of the things that fuelled the civil unrest is mining for tin, gold, diamond, and coltan (used in cell phones). Illegal mining outcrops have popped up all over the gorilla’s home, which also attracts people to hunt gorilla and trade the babies on the illegal pet trade. They have also faced massive habitat loss and fragmentation as people move in and destroy the gorilla’s homes for livestock.

Description Strike a pose, you’re on camera!
The Eastern Lowland gorilla was a great shot. He knew how to find the best angle, make the light work in his favour, and ensure his target was perfect. Today he is using his skills for change. Since 1995, the population size of his species has dropped by 77%. Together with Dogman, they show the world that the best shot is with a camera, never a gun.
Dogman is part of the iconic hybrid duo who tell the autobiographical tale of two opposites coming together as best friends and soul mates. These beloved hybrid characters work as our conduit with wildlife, helping us find joy in nature and rekindle our connection with the wild. In the last 50 years, 70% of the world’s wildlife has been lost. We must act now to save them.

Description This painting is based off Gillie and Marc's monumental bronze installation depicting the greatest animal march on the planet, it will feature 60 of the world’s most endangered species led by a great mountain gorilla, one of our closest relatives, marching together to save the animal kingdom by re-wilding the world. Inspired by the witness statement and latest documentary by David Attenborough, this sculpture is on a mission to re-wild the world. For such a big and important issue there needs to be a big messenger. Therefore, this public sculpture experience will be the largest bronze sculpture in the world at 192 meters in length, the next largest being the Statue of Unity’ at 182 meters.
At the front of the march will be a great silverback mountain gorilla, the head of his family who will do anything to protect them. He reaches out his hand, inviting the public to take hold and join him as he marches to protect his wild family. Holding on to him will be a chimp and the rest of the animals will link together in a single procession. This northern white rhino is third animal in the march.
Artwork Features In this highly expressive and passionate style Gillie and Marc have let their emotions run free in this explosive collection of freehand painting. Inspired by the styles of Brett Whiteley, Francis Bacon, and Jean-Michel Basquiat, Gillie and Marc have combined enamel paint with oil pastel to breathe life into the worlds most endangered species. Over the past five years, Gillie and Marc spent hours sketching and studying wildlife, travelling the globe to meet these animals up close. These sketches have now been brought to life in vibrant colour with love and passion. Each painting is created as a team with both the artists bringing their own emotion into every painting.
Please note: All canvases come stretched and ready to hang, however if you would like your painting to be framed, Gillie and Marc are happy to provide this service for you at your request. For framing enquiries please email us.
Care Instructions It is important to keep your painting out of direct sunlight and not to lean anything against the surface of the canvas. If it gets dusty, it can be cleaned with a soft dry cloth.

Medium Resin wildlife sculptures, impasto and enamel on canvas
Style Contemporary 3D, Wildlife, Adventure
Description High above the clouds, we can look down at the earth, watching the ant-sized antelopes crossing the Serengeti or the monumental trees of the Virunga forests descending to the size of broccoli. It’s a unique perspective that helps us to really appreciate the beautiful interconnectedness of everything. We are all tiny, but together we are huge.
Some of Gillie and Marc’s fondest memories have been looking at the world from this perspective, flying above some of nature's marvels in an aeroplane. They have taken thousands of photos of wildlife from above, flying across some of the most spectacular landscapes of Africa.
Now they have transformed these experiences into their very first exhibition of sculpture wall art. In a spectacular experiment combining traditional 2D paintings with sculpture, Gillie and Marc have recreated exactly how it feels to view these wild scenes from the sky. The tiny rhinos pop out of the wall as they go about their day, and the zebra herds gallop beyond the frame as they cross the plains of canvas to the unknown. Above A Wild World gives us a new perspective, capturing the very essence of what a bright future for all wildlife could look like.
Artwork Features This groundbreaking new style of sculpture wall art is merging the practices of sculpture and traditional paintings, creating a unique 3D work that conveniently hangs on your wall. By incorporating objects or cloth on the canvas with ample impasto, these works become so much more than just a painting. Finished off with either paint or spray paint, the final product transcends the constraints of both traditional sculpture and painting to create a work of depth and substance.
Please note: All canvases come stretched and ready to hang, however if you would like your painting to be framed, Gillie and Marc are happy to provide this service for you at your request. For framing enquiries please email us.
