Unveiled in Rochester’s Central Park, this striking bronze sculpture celebrates Amelia Witherstine, a pioneering leader and trailblazer in the community. Witherstine made history in 1911 as the first woman elected to the Rochester School Board. She went on to become the board’s first female president and was among the first women to serve on the Olmsted County Jury, breaking barriers for women in public service and civic engagement.

Created by Australian sculptors Gillie and Marc, this work is part of their Statues for Equality initiative, which aims to address the global disparity in public monuments. Less than 5% of statues worldwide honour women. By bringing Amelia’s story to life in bronze, the sculpture highlights the significant contributions of women in shaping communities and inspires future generations.

Mayor Kim Norton, Rochester’s first female mayor, noted the importance of honoring historical female leaders: “I stand on the shoulders of lots of other people that have done great things in history. And Amelia, in this community, was that first, that first woman elected to office, the first woman to do so many great things that it just resonated as the right choice for us here.”

The sculpture commemorates Australian geologist and astrobiologist Dr Abigail Allwood.

Dr Abigail Allwood works at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in the United States of America and studies stromatolites, detection of life on other planets, and evolution of life on early Earth. Her early work gained notability for finding evidence of life in 3.45 billion year old stromatolites in the Pilbara formation in Australia. She is now a principal investigator on the Mars Rover 2020 team searching for evidence of life on Mars using the Planetary Instrument for X-Ray Lithochemistry (PIXL). She is the first female and first Australian principal investigator on a NASA Mars mission.

Allwood grew up in Brisbane, and was inspired by Carl Sagan and his description of the Voyager missions in the series Cosmos. She went on to accomplish an undergraduate degree in geosciences, and completed her PhD at Macquarie University in New South Wales in 2006. During her PhD, she published on 3.45 billion years old stromatolites in the Pilbara formation, describing the diversity of early life on the Archean Earth.

A bronze statue of Australian netball icon Anne Henderson has been unveiled at the State Netball Hockey Centre in a fitting tribute.

It’s difficult to describe the history of Victorian netball without mentioning Anne Henderson. One of the game’s pioneers, a statue of Anne now stands next to the entrance of the State Netball Hockey Centre in Royal Park – a venue of particular significance to Anne. It’s a fitting tribute to her lifetime commitment to the sport both on and off the court.

Born in 1904 in Benalla, Anne’s love of netball started while she was at primary school and continued while working as a teacher in regional Victoria.
Anne’s nephew John Henderson said her dedication to the teaching and development of children combined with her love of netball created a safe and welcoming space for young women to play sport.
‘Although Anne never had children, she had no shortage of children in her life through her role as a primary school teacher and her enduring interest and commitment to netball as a player, administrator and mentor, particularly in Melbourne,’ said John.
Anne had a knack for identifying and nurturing talent. She helped develop up and coming players, advocated for girls and women and governed the sport. She often provided the tram fare from her own pocket for many girls so they could travel and play at Royal Park.

In recognition of her outstanding contribution, she was inducted as a Netball Victoria Life Member in 1939, a Victorian Netball State Council region was named in her honour in 1990 and she was posthumously elevated to the Hall of Fame in 1998.

Anne’s statue has been created by renowned Australian-based sculpture artists Gillie and Marc, co-founders of Statues for Equality, a global movement to balance gender and racial representation in public statues. The statue is co-funded by the Victorian Government's Celebrating Female Sporting Icons initiative.
This is the second statue created as part of this important initiative.
These statues are a standing reminder for greater representation and recognition of women and girls in sport and recreation.

Australian netball legend, Sharelle McMahon, has had her legacy and contribution to the sport immortalised in bronze, with a statue unveiled today outside Victoria’s home of netball – John Cain Arena.

Minister for Tourism, Sport and Major Events, Steve Dimopoulos unveiled the statue, which was co-funded and created by Australian-based, internationally renowned sculptors Gillie and Marc – co-founders of Statues for Equality, a global movement to balance gender and racial representation in public statues.

“Recognising our female sporting heroes will help level the playing field and inspire the next generation of elite sporting talent,” said Minister for Tourism, Sport and Major Events, Steve Dimopoulos.

“Victorians, like the sports we play are diverse and it’s important that the athletes we choose to honour reflect that diversity.”

Originally born in Bamawm in regional Victoria, Ms McMahon remains an icon of the game with her illustrious netball career spanning 25 years as both a player and coach, amassing a long list of outstanding achievements.

She represented Melbourne Phoenix and later Melbourne Vixens as a player more than 200 times and at age 21, she made her debut for the Australian Diamonds.

McMahon went on to captain Australia 12 times in an international career that spanned 14 years and 118 matches, including two gold and two silver medals across four Commonwealth Games and two Netball World Cup victories, even scoring the winning goal at the 1999 World Cup.

She was the first athlete from a team sport selected as flagbearer for the 2010 Commonwealth Games opening ceremony and in 2016 was inducted as an athlete member of the Sport Australia Hall of Fame.

Ms McMahon continues to be a commanding presence in sport, working as Cricket Victoria’s Head of Female Cricket since December 2021.

A second statue is set to be unveiled later in the year as part of the Statues for Equality project honouring fellow netball icon, Anne Henderson at the redeveloped State Netball Centre in Parkville.

In the First World War 136,000 “walers” (the general name applied to Australian horses abroad) were sent overseas for use by the Australian Imperial Force and the British and Indian governments. Only one horse from the 136,000 made it back to Australia. His name was Sandy.

Sandy belonged to Major General Sir William Bridges, who was killed in battle at Gallipoli. A gentle bay standing 16 hands high, he was the Major’s favourite charger and it was his dying wish to have his beloved horse returned home to Australia to enjoy a long and happy retirement.

When the Major died, Sandy was put into the care of Captain Leslie Whitfield and was transported to Egypt then onto France in March 1916. It wasn’t until the following year that the Australian authorities were able to honour the Major’s dying wish and granted Sandy a safe passage to return home to Australia.

The big bay lived out his days munching on green grass at Maribyrnong in Melbourne’s west near Highpoint, around a place named Remount Hill near the Maribyrnong River, where many thousands of horses including Sandy, had earlier begun their long one-way journey.

Fred Tracey was one of the foremost promoters and pioneers of Sprint car racing in Australia, and contributed much to the Australian speedway during the 1950s. Tracey took on management of the nearby Kirjon Speedway in 1951 renaming it Tracey’s Speedway, located near Highpoint in Maribyrnong Reserve, off Raleigh Road. Under his management and with wife Beryl, the track went on to become one of Australia’s top venues hosting a range of Australian and overseas star performers.

Like all speedways, the track was famous for many memorable moments including an event in 1953 where Tracey was lucky to escape serious injury during the Speedcar Butchers’ Picnic, where a car bounced off the fence at 70mph, and missed Tracey by mere centimetres.

The main grandstand for the speedway still exists on the edge of the Maribyrnong Reserve, with the Victorian Classic & Vintage Speedway Club hosting an annual Tracey’s Speedway Reunion each year.

The Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg was unveiled on March 15, 2021 at City Point, the mixed-use development located at 445 Albee Square in Downtown Brooklyn, where it will be permanently installed. The event will take place during Women’s History Month, and commemorate Justice Ginsburg’s posthumous 88^th birthday.

Chris Conlon, EVP and Chief Operating Officer of Acadia Realty, partner in the City Point development, comments, “In her lifetime, Justice Ginsburg championed countless crucial causes. This statue is just a small reminder that we all need to set the highest possible standards for ourselves and society.” He continues, “From the people who work here, to the diverse shoppers and shopping at City Point, everyone feels welcome, equal and respected. We are honored to have this great statue grace our property, and to bring Justice Ginsburg’s ‘pathmarking’ spirit back to Brooklyn to inspire us for generations.”

Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams who will declare March 15th Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg Day in Brooklyn adds, "No one can dispute the towering achievements of this judicial giant and the value of adding her likeness to the landscape of our city.” He continues, “There is nothing more fitting than to have the sculpture and, one of the most important buildings in our borough, the Brooklyn Municipal Building, named after this beloved trailblazer. We are pleased to champion these tributes to her commitment to justice, Brooklyn birthright, and enduring legacy.

Justice Ginsburg’s lifelong commitment to equal justice has inspired millions worldwide. Artists Gillie and Marc explain their endeavour, “We had the honor and privilege to create Justice Ginsburg’s distinguished likeness in everlasting bronze as a part of Statues for Equality." U.S Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor is one of the most important and remarkable leading Women in current history. Justice Sotomayor is the first Hispanic federal judge in New York State, the first Puerto Rican woman to serve as a judge in a U.S federal court and the youngest judge in the Southern District of the U.S.

Justice Sotomayor earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1976 with the highest academic honours Princeton University can give to a graduate. She began her legal career as Assistant District Attorney in the New York County District Attorney’s Office before going on to litigate international commercial matters at Pavia and Harcourt where she served as an associate and then became partner. In 1991, President Bush nominated her to the Southern District of New York. President Clinton then nominated her to a seat on the U.S District Court Appeals where she sat for just over 10 years until President Obama nominated her as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court, a role she has assumed since August 8, 2009.

Sonia believes that each person has equal opportunity to be a good and wise judge, regardless of their background or life experiences.This is a testaments to her kind, compassionate but fearless and effective serving of the justice system. With her dedication to the judicial process and fighting spirit, Justice Sotomayor has done extensive work especially for those who feel marginalised or under represented.

Her bronze bust was unveiled at the Bronx Terminal Market where the U.S Supreme Court Justice grew up and at home in the heart of her local community. Justice Sotomayor is an incredible inspiration and we hope that is memorialisation will go on to inspire every one in the community that comes by knowing she is a proud Bronx native and trailblazer.

"Created by artist-activists Gillie and Marc and Yorta Yorta and Dja Dja Warung artist Jandamarra Cadd, the statue captures a powerful and determined Peris. Cadd also painted the portrait of a bare-footed Peris that sits in Parliament House. Peris was the first Indigenous woman to be elected to parliament and represented the ALP in the senate for the Northern Territory for three years.

The artists said there were multiple layers to the statue. The saltwater crocodile and the blackheaded python represent Peris’ totems on her mother and father’s sides. Three native hibiscus flowers, the flowers of the stolen generation, are symbolic of her mother and grandparents, who were forcibly removed from their parents. At Peris’ feet are her hockey stick and Olympic gold medal. Peris swapped hockey - for which she had won an Olympic gold medal with the Hockeyroos - for athletics and managed to remain at the top of her game.

“Most statues are of people on a podium, or a square box, but I didn’t come out of a square box, my life has been one of resilience and strength", Peris said. “That’s why I wanted it to have me running over Country. It’s rugged.”

At the unveiling, Peris’ children Destiny and Jack said they had not seen their mother in her sporting endeavors but they had witnessed her advocacy in Indigenous health, education and human rights. “There was not a dry eye ... when they spoke,” Peris said. “I want people to see that statue, young Australians particularly, to know you’ve got to have your dreams and aspirations and to know that with hard work and discipline, you can achieve anything in life.”

Awarded the Order of Australia in 1997, Peris is an official ambassador for the Australian Aboriginal Education Foundation, which provides scholarships for Indigenous students. Later in the year, the statue will move to her hometown of Darwin."

The Victorian Government is partnering with Melbourne & Olympic Parks Trust, Melbourne Storm and the National Rugby League to deliver the statues, which will be engineered in bronze right here in Melbourne and are expected to be unveiled during the 2020 NRL season.

Two NSW Rural Fire Service members who tragically lost their lives in last year's horror bushfire season have been honoured with a memorial playground and sculpture.

The NSW RFS, along with Prime Minister Scott Morrison, unveiled the playground and sculpture in Buxton in honour of Andrew O'Dwyer and Geoffrey Keaton.

Both men were killed when the truck they were travelling in rolled while battling the Green Wattle Creek fire on December 19.

The koala has always been beloved by the world, but the 2019-20 Australian bushfires elevated their story to the entire world and stole their hearts. 80% of its habitat, which was already rapidly disappearing, was destroyed and thousands of koalas were lost. Some were luckier, like the now-famous mother and daughter who were captured in a magical photograph that was shared across the globe as a symbol of love and hope. It captured the moment when the two koalas had escaped the danger of the flames and embraced each other on the side of the road. It is such a tender moment, filled with love but still expressing the fear that came with the flames. This photograph captured the hearts of the world. And it also captured ours.

On the anniversary of the 2019-20 Australian bushfires, we released this special sculpture based on the famous photo. Crafted in everlasting bronze, we have captured this moment as a tribute to all the wildlife that were lost in the flames and a reminder for us all of the importance of conservation and climate change if we are to protect our precious animals. Koalas are marsupials, which mainly means their young are born before they are ready to live in the outside world. So when this koala joey was born, still an embryo, she would have instinctively headed for her mama’s pouch. There she would have stayed for six months, suckling constantly. When she was strong enough to survive outside the pouch and start eating eucalyptus leaves, she would have left her mama’s pouch and clambered onto her back, which is how we find this mother and daughter, making their way through their eucalyptus forest.

To commemorate the deeds of the $7 million earning, seven-time Group 1 winner Buffering, Brisbane Racing Club commissioned Gillie and Marc to create a life-size statue of the legendary race horse. The statue stands at the front of the new infield entrance to Eagle Farm.

Heathcote said he believed Buffering’s never-say-die attitude was the reason the public took him to heart. “Australians love an underdog and he had all the qualities of a great fighter. He would get knocked down but he would get back up again,” he said. “And he did it in an era of sprinting greats.”

BRC Chairman Neville Bell said in the 152 years of Eagle Farm this was the first time a full-size statue had been unveiled. “From day one of this club it was always the plan to have a significant statue at Eagle Farm and we couldn’t think of a better opportunity than with Buffering,” he said. “He was a great ambassador for racing in Queensland and for the Brisbane Racing Club.”

Majlinda Kelmendi, the first athlete from Kosovo to win an Olympic Games gold medal, unveiled a statue of herself in her hometown on Friday. Kelmendi is a judoka. She won the 52-kilograms division at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games. She's also a two-time world champion and four-time European champion.

Hundreds of people, including International Judo Federation president Marius Viser, endured the rain to gather in Peja, 85 kilometers (50 miles) west of Pristina, to see the bronze statue of Kelmendi in a judogi preparing to fight. “I strongly believe that the statue will motivate children in Kosovo to achieve successes in life like me,” the 28-year-old Kelmendi said.

The dichotomy of his regality and gracefulness, his commanding presence and gentle nature left a deep impression on them both, and they never forgot him. The Haast's eagle (Hieraaetus moorei, formerly called Harpagornis moorei) is an extinct species of eagle that once lived in the South Island of New Zealand, commonly accepted to be the pouakai of Maori legend.

The species was the largest eagle known to have existed. Its massive size is explained as an evolutionary response to the size of its prey, the flightless moa, the largest of which could weigh 230 kg (510 lb). Haast's eagle became extinct around 1400, after the moa were hunted to extinction by the first Māori. Gillie and Marc created this sculpture for Karamea which is a town on the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand.

Humanitarian, scholar, educator, and author, Dr Tererai Trent is one of the world’s most internationally recognized voices for quality education and women’s empowerment. Distinguished as Oprah Winfrey’s “All-time favorite guest”, Trent is a prominent activist for equal rights to education, her contribution to this cause was born from her own fight against adversity.

Trent was born in Zimbabwe (formally Rhodesia) when poverty, war, and traditional women’s roles denied women the opportunity to attend school. She secretly taught herself to read, and later wrote her dreams, which included getting a bachelor’s degree, a master’s, and a PhD. She then sealed them in a tin can and buried them deep in the ground.

Despite marrying young and having three children by the time she was eighteen, Trent never lost sight of her dreams. Through hard work and belief in her dreams, she eventually earned multiple degrees, and a prominent global platform with world leaders and international businesses and audiences where she advocates for universal access to quality education.

Trent has published two books, won the 2018 NAACP Award for Outstanding Literary Work, and improved education for over 6,000 children. A true inspiration, Trent’s motto is “Tinogona”, which means “It is achievable!”

Cate Blanchett is an internationally acclaimed and award-winning actress, producer, humanitarian, and dedicated member of the arts community. Larry L. Luing, who transformed a secretarial school into Berkeley College, which focuses on business and professional studies and has multiple locations in the metropolitan area, died last Thursday in Florida. He was 86 and a former resident of Oakland.

The Iowa-born Mr. Luing, a Korean War Army veteran, joined the Berkeley School in 1965 as vice president of administration. He was working at the time at McGraw-Hill, selling textbooks to business schools. Mr. Luing eventually became owner of the Berkeley School, which had been founded three decades earlier in East Orange. Under his leadership, the for-profit institution earned regional accreditation and the license to award associate and bachelor’s degrees. He retired as president and chairman of the board in 2001.

“Mr. Luing was a great visionary who was largely responsible for establishing Berkeley College as a leader at the forefront of career-focused education,” school President Michael J. Smith said in a statement. “He touched the lives of tens of thousands, not only throughout our region, but globally as well.”

Gillie and Marc created this sculpture in memory of him.

The District Council of Grant awarded Gillie and Marc with the opportunity to create a feature sculpture for the Port MacDonnell Waterfront. The artists were successful with their design of a life -size bronze figure of a fisherman returning from sea with a freshly caught southern rock lobster. The sculpture commemorates not only the Lobster fishing industry of the area, which is known as Australia’s Rock Lobster capital, but also the local community and industry of fisherman.

The majestic Southern Ocean holds an array of sea life including southern rock lobster, tuna, and abalone, with the edge of the continental shelf off our coast considered one of the best places to spot whales, dolphins, seals and seabirds. A number of charter boat companies’ offer exclusive fishing or marine wildlife tours (links below). The Port MacDonnell breakwater protects South Australia’s largest Rock Lobster Fishing Fleet and provides sheltered conditions for recreational water sports and fishing. Gillie and Marc created the Lobster Fisherman to show the history and character of the area.

The Warragamba ANZAC Committee commissioned Gillie and marc to create a bronze, life size replica of an ANZAC soldier standing, head bowed in remembrance. The sculpture was unveiled during Remembrance Day 2018. The design of the combined memorial is as follows: The sandstone plinths are original core samples from Warragamba Dam and have been donated by the Water Board. The plinth facing west represents the traditional orientation during remembrance of all those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.

The plinth facing east represents the promise of a new day, a statement that those who worked on Warragamba Dam expected to return home to see another day. The two (2) plinths back to back represent the opposing expectations of those who have died. The soldier ready to lay down his life for his country.

The dam worker expecting to return home. Yet both face the same fate. The pattern surrounding both plinths represents the rising sun with the centre most section, the sun and the radiating lines the sun's rays.

The design and construction of the memorial was undertaken by the Works Division of Wollondilly Shire council. Funds were provided by the Federal Government through the Wollondilly Remembers Committee and Wollondilly Shire Council. Gillie and Marc were asked to add to this memorial by creating a bronze sculpture.

Gillie and Marc were commissioned by Invercargill Council to create a bronze sculpture of composer and Invercargill legend, Alex Lithgow. A composer of great renown, his marches were published throughout the world and the Americans acclaimed him as ‘the Sousa of the Antipodes’. Lithgow produced approximately two hundred marches, as well as numerous pieces for band, orchestra, piano and voice. The artists wanted to honour his time in Invercargill, where he spent time from ages 6-24.

Alexander Frame Lithgow (1 December 1870 in Glasgow – 12 July 1929 in Launceston, Tasmania) was a Scottish-born, New Zealand and Australian based composer and bandleader known as the "Sousa of the Antipodes". His name is pronounced "Alek" by his family. Gillie and Marc created him in bronze for Invercargill Council in New Zealand.

Archbishop John Bede Polding is an extraordinary man who lived from 1794-1877. Gillie and Marc were asked to commemorate this local legend in bronze for Rosebank College in Five Dock, NSW. Gillie and Marc created the Archbishop Polding sculpture along with his horse, because in one month alone he was known for having traveled over 1,500 kilometers on horseback, preaching and praying to help those in need. The sculpture inspires the community to be kinder and more welcoming, while at the same time passionately driven towards a better tomorrow for all. Born in Liverpool, England, Polding arrived in Sydney on September 13^th, 1935 to become the city’s first bishop. While initially met with suspicion, his dedication and gentleness gained him respect from even his most adverse opponents. Polding attended to the needs of the general public, the sick and dying, the poor and disadvantaged, as well as the spiritual needs of prisoners. For 30 years, he worked with love and open arms to create a truly Australian Catholic Church. Polding, a recognized academic, fought for education and established two monasteries, as well as the first Australian religious community. Inside or outside of the religious community, he is a heartwarming example of human goodness. His extreme compassion coupled with dedication, allowed him to establish some of Australia’s most respected institutes, and touch the lives of people for generations.

Wollondilly Anglican College students, dignitaries and veterans gathered at a ceremony to watch the unveiling of an Anzac memorial this week.

Former Prime Minister John Howard and director of the Australian War Memorial Dr Brendan Nelson joined headmaster Dr Stuart Quarmby in revealing a statue and officially opening the Anzac shelter in the playground on Monday, June 18. The ceremony paid tribute and honoured soldiers who had died in World War I. Several speakers talked about the Battle of Fromelles, the horrors of war and the lives of particular soldiers and their families. The statue, made by sculptors Gillie and Marc Schattner, has a special meaning to the headmaster. The soldier is a representation of Acting Sergeant William Polding Ryan, who was 20 years old when he was killed in action at the Battle of Fromelles. He was Dr Quarmby’s grandmother’s uncle.

“The statue of the soldier represents all of the diggers who fought and died in the Battle at Fromelles in a 24-hour period,” he said. The little girl in the statue is year-one student Hannah, who is the great, great, great, great niece of Mr Ryan.

“[When looking at the statue] imagine every student saying ‘thank you for paying such a price’,” Dr Quarmby said. “Imagine him saying ‘thanks for finding me’.” Dr Quarmby spoke about his relatives Corporal Alfred George Tuck and Mr Ryan who died on their first day of battle on July 19, 1916 at Fromelles. Their bodies lay in mass unmarked graves until they were identified by DNA from surviving family members.

Mr Howard, who opened the school 15 years ago, praised the college for honouring Anzac soldiers.

“We remember particularly the terrible battle at Fromelles described as the worst day in Australia’s history because of the terrible losses,” he said. “All I can ask...is just to simply reflect firstly on how fortunate we are to live in this wonderful country and to not grizzle about it unless you have a good reason to do so, and also very importantly, to remember what made it possible. Remember those people who did give their lives to defend the freedoms of this country. “And finally honour those men and women who wear the uniform of the Australian Defence Forces today.”

To commemorate the deeds of the $7 million earning, seven-time Group 1 winner Buffering, Brisbane Racing Club commissioned Gillie and Marc to create a life-size statue of the legendary race horse. The statue stands at the front of the new infield entrance to Eagle Farm.

Heathcote said he believed Buffering’s never-say-die attitude was the reason the public took him to heart. “Australians love an underdog and he had all the qualities of a great fighter. He would get knocked down but he would get back up again,” he said. “And he did it in an era of sprinting greats.”

BRC Chairman Neville Bell said in the 152 years of Eagle Farm this was the first time a full-size statue had been unveiled. “From day one of this club it was always the plan to have a significant statue at Eagle Farm and we couldn’t think of a better opportunity than with Buffering,” he said. “He was a great ambassador for racing in Queensland and for the Brisbane Racing Club.”

Canberra’s National Zoo and Aquarium is a small, friendly tourist site that allows its visitors to get up and close and personal with the animals. Crowd favourites are lioness Millie and her two baby cubs, Marjan and Sabi.

When the artists were approached to make something to welcome the guests staying in the Jamala Lodge, they wanted to keep with the Zoo’s “close encounter” atmosphere. Gillie and Marc recreated Millie playing with her lion cubs and the children absolutely adore it. Every day, loads of photos are taken of the children with the sculpture, cuddling the lions they just saw within the zoo.

Gillie and Marc believe art should be touched and loved. For children in particular, the physical laying of hands on animals creates a stronger emotional connection.

Description
Diprotodon is classified as “megafauna” and is more affectionately known as a giant wombat. It is the largest marsupial ever to live and first existed 1.6 million years ago. In 2011, a diprotodon skeleton called Kenny was found in Eulo in outback Queensland. Kenny is one of the largest and best-preserved megafauna skeletons ever discovered.

Gillie and Marc were commissioned by Paroo Shire Council to recreate Kenny in bronze. The artists worked with paleontologists from Queensland Museum to use Kenny’s bones to recreate a biologically accurate, life-sized bronze sculpture. The bronze statue has helped create Paroo as a destination to learn about fossils and mega fauna in general. In fact, on the Outback Queensland website it lists the statue as the number one tourist site above mud springs, air raid shelters and rivers.

In 2012, four rhinos mysteriously died in Targona’s Western Plain Zoo in Dubbo including a mother and her calf. Gillie and Marc wanted to create an artwork in their memory while also raising awareness for the need for rhino conservation.

Three black rhino mother and calf sculptures were installed at the Visitor Information Centre, the Dubbo Regional Airport and the front of the Zoo. The artists used images of the Zoo’s Black Rhino mother and calf Bakhita and Kufara as inspiration for the sculptures. Both the Director of Dubbo Zoo and the Mayor of Dubbo commented to the press on how well these rhinos linked Dubbo and the Zoo while highlighting the plight of wild rhinos.

Poaching is at unprecedented levels. In Africa, rhino populations are barely keeping pace. These sculptures raise awareness of their potential extinction while highlighting the importance of breeding programs.

“Artists Gillie and Marc have done an amazing job of capturing such an iconic species in a very lifelike and natural way,” said Matthew Fuller, Director of Dubbo Zoo.

“These sculptures reflect the community’s pride in the Zoo and the research and conservation endeavours that take place right here in our city,” said Mayor of Dubbo Councillor Mathew Dickerson. “I believe the sculptures in themselves may become iconic city attractions.”

“We were so happy to do this,” Gillie says. “Each of our rhino sculptures is a memento to the rhinos that were lost, a constant reminder of this endangered species and a message to protect threatened animals.”

Description
St Lucy’s is a Dominican Catholic primary school that provides education for those with disabilities,” said Gillie. Jo Karaolis was the principal of St Lucy’s School up until her retirement and she wanted to give the children a parting gift. “We were contacted by Jo to create something that would make the kids less afraid of leaving their parents for the day,” Gillie continued.

Saint Dominic is always represented with a dog and a torch because Dominic’s mother supposedly had a dream when she was pregnant that she was giving birth to a dog who would run through the countryside with a torch in its mouth.

“The life-sized bronze Labrador is a new representation of Saint Dominican symbology. “Labs are one of the friendliest types of dogs, and this was placed outside the front of the school to enchant the pupils – especially on their first day.”

Gillie and Marc have gone through a lot of change and growth during their expansive career. They like to try new things and are always up for a challenge. But one thing that has remained steady and constant is their passion for animal conservation. The artists created Now and Forever for Tasmania’s Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary. The sculpture is a showcase for three endangered species – the Tasmanian devil, the Eastern quoll and the Tasmanian bettong – who desperately need protection. “The director of the wildlife sanctuary came to us and explained how much danger these animals were in,” says Gillie. “He commissioned three sculptures because his goal is to do something about the ignorance concerning these near-extinct animals, and their importance to Australia.” The artists chose to have the three animals cuddling and hiding behind one another as a way to highlight their vulnerabilities. What we do for these beautiful creatures today, will impact their lives forever.

The world’s oldest and largest koala sanctuary, Lone Pine, is now home to 130 koalas and over 100 species of native animals. Gillie and Marc created Cuddles as a way for students and adults to connect with these lovable creatures while enhancing the sanctuary’s nurturing environment. A koala is difficult to recreate, but Cuddles is extremely lifelike and has been well-received by both the young and young-at-heart.

David Syme (1827-1908), newspaper proprietor, was born on 2 October 1827 at North Berwick, Scotland, fourth and youngest son of George Alexander Syme (1791-1845), schoolmaster, and his wife Jean, née Mitchell. G. A. Syme was a classical scholar, radical in both church and state, who became parish schoolmaster at Montrose, his native town, and from 1822 parish schoolmaster and clerk of the kirk session of St Mary, North Berwick. Never a popular citizen, he was strong-willed, obstinate in his opinions, nervous, arrogant, shy, brusque, inarticulate and awkward with his fellows. He passed these characteristics to his sons, especially to David, who like his brothers and sister, was taught by their father in the schoolroom attached to their house, but only he failed to escape from its atmosphere of close study, severe discipline and curt control. Much of his shyness, his nervous inability to join his fellows in business or companionship, arose from complete obedience to his father although Syme was never physically unkind to his sons. Of this David wrote in later years: 'It was difficult to understand my father's attitude to us boys. He had naturally a kind disposition; he was a devoted husband and no-one ever asked him for help that he did not freely give … but his affection for us never found expression in words'.

Boulia loses a legend. Boulia fossil legend Dick Suter passed away suddenly last week with a funeral expected to be held in the North West town in coming days. Friend and colleague Tom Hurley said yesterday it was difficult to even begin explaining what 'Dinosaur Dick' had contributed to the community.

"He was one of the most reliable friends a man could want in his life, he would do anything for you and not expect anything in return," he said. "He lived a great life without needing lots of money or possessions, and for an 'unedumacated neanderthal' he made a mark in the fossil industry."

Mr Suter had been in the Boulia District since 1953, and curated the museum in town for 15 years. Through his work Mr Suter discovered a species, the Bouliachelys Suteri, which was named after him. He passed away on Wednesday and a service is tentatively expected to be held on Wednesday.

Gillie and Marc were commissioned by the Henry Lawson Festival Committee and Weddin Shire Council to create a life-sized statue of Henry Lawson to go into his birth town, Grenfell. The artists were given a strict eight-month timeframe and stuck to that for the 2014 unveiling and opening of the Henry Lawson Festival. The artwork included a life-sized Henry Lawson sitting on a bench and included a light display. The artists were also keen to portray him as bohemian artist and troubled soul. They didn’t want him on a plinth, towering above people. Instead, a relaxed Lawson is poised, pen in hand on a park bench encouraging others to sit next to him and reflect on their surroundings.

School can be a daunting place, especially for the kindergarten kids who have never worn a uniform before and might be leaving their parents for the first time. Mosman Preparatory School commissioned Gillie and Marc to make an artwork that would reflect their school spirit. The artists wanted to give anxious children a sense of community, to feel safe in their “home away from home”. Rather than the usual sculptures that loom over everyone, Gillie and Marc’s artwork sculpture sits at eye level of the students instantly creating a sense of warmth and friendliness. The older boy puts a comforting arm on the younger one as though guiding him while the younger one looks up to him with admiration. The Journey Ahead reflects the school as a safe space. It’s the perfect example of school spirit and unity.

Australian artist Russell Drysdale became an iconic figure after painting a series of landscapes of drought-ravaged 1940s New South Wales. Recreated in bronze by Gillie and Marc for the town of West Wyalong is Drysdale’s studio space – comprising of his easel, and a 3D version of one of his famous paintings. “This interactive sculpture is placed on the street at the exact angle Drysale painted from,” says Gillie. “We’ve recreated the streetscape, only it is more than double the original size. It’s a real landmark for West Wyalong.”

Healesville Sanctuary is one of Australia’s most-loved tourist attractions and the best place in Victoria to interact with native wildlife. The not-for-profit organisation is committed to fighting wildlife extinction. It’s also situated next to heritage-listed, Coranderrk. The Sanctuary wanted to pay tribute to William Barak (1824-1903), the last traditional elder of the Wurundjeri clan and influential spokesman for Aboriginal social justice. Until his death he was the acknowledged leader at Coranderrk as a liaison between the Government and the indigenous population. He dedicated his life to working tirelessly for his people, and was a highly respected man and leader to both Indigenous groups and European settlers. Gillie and Marc created a life-sized bronze sculpture that honours Barak as the brave and dignified link between different groups of people, unifying the Victorian community.

Gillie and Marc were commissioned to immortalise beloved former Australia captain, Ricky Ponting, who was born and bred in Tasmania.Beyond Ponting’s renowned cricket skills, his foundation dedicated to helping young Australian’s and their families beat cancer, called Ponting Foundation shows a level of character at the epitome of selflessness, empathy, and kindness. Ricky has used his profile to influence widespread engagement to raise important funds for specific charity programs in the fight against cancer in Australia’s young people. There are few people worthier of a monumental bronze sculpture, to inspire an entire community. To Pointing’s absolutely delight, he unveiled a statue of himself before the first Test against the West Indies in 2015. The artists have aptly portrayed Australia’s highest-run scorer mid-play, performing his famous pull shot. This signature stroke sent fear into bowlers around the world and was used in over 168 tests during is 170year-long career. Visitors enjoy coming to the stadium to get their photo taken with the superstar.

Matthew Bowen is a revered rugby league player and one of NRL’s community ambassadors. He grew up in Hope Vale, an Indigenous community in Cape York. Hope Vale Aboriginal Shire Council commissioned Gillie and Marc to create a sculpture of Bowen. After his retirement, Bowen wanted to give back to his former club, so he took up a role as Community Engagement Officer for the North Queensland Cowboys. He was later selected as one of NRL’s Community Ambassadors for his impressive contributions. He’s an inspiring figure to the local region, and a bronze was a fitting tribute. Gillie and Marc were asked to create a bronze statue in Darrel’s likeness, so that his legacy could be immortalized at Latrobe. Darrel “Doc” Baldock started out an ordinary bloke from Quoiba in Tasmania, but during his lifetime he left a lasting legacy both statewide and nationally. The Doc captained the St Kilda Football club to its only premiership in 1966, was a champion horse breeder and trainer and a state politician until 1987, when he retired to coach his beloved Saints. Many who reach the same levels of success as Darrel Baldock lose grips on their humility and empathy for others. However, throughout his life, The Doc remained a humble and kind soul, loved by his friends, family and community.This sculpture has become a beloved staple at Latrobe, drawing in crowds who want to take photos with this legendary man. Recreating such a worthy role model in bronze reminds others to reach high, while never losing sight of their roots.

Gillie and Marc were commissioned by St Augustine’s College to create an artwork that would teach their religious history in a way students would enjoy. Gillie and Marc flew to Cairns to meet with the principal and administration to brainstorm initial ideas. They came up with four ideas and then relayed them to the students. The final product was the Lavalla Table, named after the village in France where St Marcellin Champagnat established the world’s first Marist school. The table also includes two statues of boys talking to each other. The artists believe that when people sit together at the table to enjoy their favourite drink or meal, conversations are formed that can change history. This table represents human kindness at its epitome, where the youth of today can join each other with open hearts, and open minds to break down barriers that will make the future a better and more accepting place! After it was put in the playground, it became a huge hit! It’s strong enough so the children can sit at the table and have lunch. The feedback has been that they’re on it every day and the students love being part of this important historical event.

Kenny Russell was a revered jockey who won four premierships before being tragically killed during a race at the age of 42. Even more heartbreaking, his wife Carol was in the crowd and witnessed his death. However, after his death the horse racing community came together with kindness and compassion to support the late Russell’s widow. There is now a memorial race in his honour at the Callaghan Park, which she regularly attends. Gillie and Marc were commissioned by North Burnett Council to replace the beloved fiberglass sculpture of the late jockey. The last artwork, made by a different artist, was sadly deteriorating which his quite common with fibreglass. The artists worked closely with Carol to create a more accurate sculpture that would more closely reflect Kenny’s facial features.

The Pit Pony Experience Project was a community-driven idea to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the last working pit ponies in Australia. Wharrier and Mr Ed retired from the Collinsville Coal Mine in 1990. The ponies were mates to the miners and symbols of strength, unity and companionship in the small town. The Collinsville community banded together to raise nearly $200,000. Gillie and Marc created a life-sized pit pony bronze statue, which is situated in the center of the town. The project went viral and made news headlines across Australia. The Pit Pony brought a small community together, and wowed an entire nation.

The Old Barker Association commissioned Gillie and Marc to create an artwork to celebrate its 125^th anniversary. The brief was ‘dare to dream…anything is possible’. Gillie and Marc created a life-size figure as a way to make the artwork more relatable for the students. Gillie an Marc wanted the sculpture to embody friendship, compassion, and commitment, so they had one Barker student carrying another younger student on his shoulders. The younger student, with the help if his friend, is able to reach for the starts. The feedback from the school was that the sculpture inspires the students to ban together and dream big – because as long as you have the help of your friends, anything is possible. Old Barker Boy Chris Russel (70) unveiled the sculpture and was joined by many special guests, including the current Head of Barker, Phillip Heath and former three Headmasters.

A council approached Gillie and Marc and asked them for a sculpture that would unify their community, while paying homage to its character and incredible history. The artists were inspired by the city’s rich farming background, which gave it a very admirable development. It’s because of farmers that communities are able to survive and flourish! The artists created a life-size sculpture of a farmer, with a friendly side-kick! It’s well known that farmers possess an important relationship with animals, and Gillie and Marc wanted to honour this, as well as bring an element of fun into the work. That’s why they created a dog to go with the farmer, adding another dimension to the art The farmer and dog sculpture became a destination in its own right, which led visitors to gain a deeper understanding of community’s roots, and with that, instilled a sense of pride in its residents.

Description
In early 2017, Gillie and Marc were commissioned to create a sculpture of Lady Mary Fitzroy dipping her toe into water – in recognition of the impact floods have had on Gympie, Queensland. The city is deeply connected to Lady Mary, known for her compassion and philanthropy. Lady Mary Lennox became a Fitzroy when she married her husband, Sir Charles August Fitzroy on a trip to Paris. The British native moved to Australia together, where Sir Charles became the first governor-general of Australia in 1850. Tragically, the well-respected Lady Mary was killed by a carriage accident. The heart broken Governor Fitzroy named a number of Queensland landmarks in memory of his kind wife, including the Mary River, Mary Street, Maryborough, and Mary Terrace. Hers is a story of tragedy, but above all else, love. Gillie and Marc’s creation of the sculpture marked the launch of a historic walking trail for the city of Gympie, which fuels increased tourism to the area.

The Cadia East underground mine commissioned Gillie and Marc to create a bronze sculpture of a miner for their official opening, which was held in November 2013. In extreme environments, such as those faced in mines, communication and togetherness are critical for survival. The miner sculpture for Cadia East reminds people to cherish the kinship developed between workers, and instils a sense of pride in employees and the community for their affiliation with the mining industry.

Description
In 2013, Gillie and Marc were asked to create a bust of the late Pope Saint Jean Paul II.

Jean Paul is known for a monumental act of human kindness, after an assassination attempt on his life. Two years after it happened, Jean Paul II went to visit young man who attempted to murder him, and after a private conversation the two emerged as friends. Jean Paul II said that he sincerely forgave his assassin, and had already done so in the ambulance after the shooting. Each year, John Paul College commemorates his life on August 30^th, and requested that the artists complete the bust sculpture in time for their ceremony. Gillie and Marc succeeded, and the artwork was unveiled to everybody’s delight at the college in Coffs Harbour, NSW. The principal of John Paul College, Michael Carniatio said “Dear Gillie and Marc, I was thrilled to receive the bust of Pope John Paul II. It is exactly what we wanted and will hold pride of place at the front of the College. To have a product so magnificent that was devised from a few photographs and a phone call is absolutely thrilling. Thank you for this wonderful piece of art.
