Description
David Syme (1827-1908), newspaper proprietor, was born on 2 October 1827 at North Berwick, Scotland, fourth and youngest son of George Alexander Syme (1791-1845), schoolmaster, and his wife Jean, née Mitchell. G. A. Syme was a classical scholar, radical in both church and state, who became parish schoolmaster at Montrose, his native town, and from 1822 parish schoolmaster and clerk of the kirk session of St Mary, North Berwick. Never a popular citizen, he was strong-willed, obstinate in his opinions, nervous, arrogant, shy, brusque, inarticulate and awkward with his fellows. He passed these characteristics to his sons, especially to David, who like his brothers and sister, was taught by their father in the schoolroom attached to their house, but only he failed to escape from its atmosphere of close study, severe discipline and curt control. Much of his shyness, his nervous inability to join his fellows in business or companionship, arose from complete obedience to his father although Syme was never physically unkind to his sons. Of this David wrote in later years: 'It was difficult to understand my father's attitude to us boys. He had naturally a kind disposition; he was a devoted husband and no-one ever asked him for help that he did not freely give … but his affection for us never found expression in words'.

Boulia loses a legend. Boulia fossil legend Dick Suter passed away suddenly last week with a funeral expected to be held in the North West town in coming days. Friend and colleague Tom Hurley said yesterday it was difficult to even begin explaining what 'Dinosaur Dick' had contributed to the community.

"He was one of the most reliable friends a man could want in his life, he would do anything for you and not expect anything in return," he said. "He lived a great life without needing lots of money or possessions, and for an 'unedumacated neanderthal' he made a mark in the fossil industry."

Mr Suter had been in the Boulia District since 1953, and curated the museum in town for 15 years. Through his work Mr Suter discovered a species, the Bouliachelys Suteri, which was named after him. He passed away on Wednesday and a service is tentatively expected to be held on Wednesday.

Gillie and Marc were commissioned by the Henry Lawson Festival Committee and Weddin Shire Council to create a life-sized statue of Henry Lawson to go into his birth town, Grenfell. The artists were given a strict eight-month timeframe and stuck to that for the 2014 unveiling and opening of the Henry Lawson Festival. The artwork included a life-sized Henry Lawson sitting on a bench and included a light display. The artists were also keen to portray him as bohemian artist and troubled soul. They didn’t want him on a plinth, towering above people. Instead, a relaxed Lawson is poised, pen in hand on a park bench encouraging others to sit next to him and reflect on their surroundings.

School can be a daunting place, especially for the kindergarten kids who have never worn a uniform before and might be leaving their parents for the first time. Mosman Preparatory School commissioned Gillie and Marc to make an artwork that would reflect their school spirit. The artists wanted to give anxious children a sense of community, to feel safe in their “home away from home”. Rather than the usual sculptures that loom over everyone, Gillie and Marc’s artwork sculpture sits at eye level of the students instantly creating a sense of warmth and friendliness. The older boy puts a comforting arm on the younger one as though guiding him while the younger one looks up to him with admiration. The Journey Ahead reflects the school as a safe space. It’s the perfect example of school spirit and unity.

Gillie and Marc were commissioned to immortalise beloved former Australia captain, Ricky Ponting, who was born and bred in Tasmania.Beyond Ponting’s renowned cricket skills, his foundation dedicated to helping young Australian’s and their families beat cancer, called Ponting Foundation shows a level of character at the epitome of selflessness, empathy, and kindness. Ricky has used his profile to influence widespread engagement to raise important funds for specific charity programs in the fight against cancer in Australia’s young people. There are few people worthier of a monumental bronze sculpture, to inspire an entire community. To Pointing’s absolutely delight, he unveiled a statue of himself before the first Test against the West Indies in 2015. The artists have aptly portrayed Australia’s highest-run scorer mid-play, performing his famous pull shot. This signature stroke sent fear into bowlers around the world and was used in over 168 tests during is 170year-long career. Visitors enjoy coming to the stadium to get their photo taken with the superstar.

Healesville Sanctuary is one of Australia’s most-loved tourist attractions and the best place in Victoria to interact with native wildlife. The not-for-profit organisation is committed to fighting wildlife extinction. It’s also situated next to heritage-listed, Coranderrk. The Sanctuary wanted to pay tribute to William Barak (1824-1903), the last traditional elder of the Wurundjeri clan and influential spokesman for Aboriginal social justice. Until his death he was the acknowledged leader at Coranderrk as a liaison between the Government and the indigenous population. He dedicated his life to working tirelessly for his people, and was a highly respected man and leader to both Indigenous groups and European settlers. Gillie and Marc created a life-sized bronze sculpture that honours Barak as the brave and dignified link between different groups of people, unifying the Victorian community.

Matthew Bowen is a revered rugby league player and one of NRL’s community ambassadors. He grew up in Hope Vale, an Indigenous community in Cape York. Hope Vale Aboriginal Shire Council commissioned Gillie and Marc to create a sculpture of Bowen. After his retirement, Bowen wanted to give back to his former club, so he took up a role as Community Engagement Officer for the North Queensland Cowboys. He was later selected as one of NRL’s Community Ambassadors for his impressive contributions. He’s an inspiring figure to the local region, and a bronze was a fitting tribute. The artists portrayed a powerful and muscular Bowen running with the ball, to show off his talent and sporting prowess.The sculpture, which paid due tribute to a strong member of the Indigenous community, helps motivate the next generation, letting them know that with kindness and hard work they’ll be able to achieve their goals.

Gillie and Marc were asked to create a bronze statue in Darrel’s likeness, so that his legacy could be immortalized at Latrobe. Darrel “Doc” Baldock started out an ordinary bloke from Quoiba in Tasmania, but during his lifetime he left a lasting legacy both statewide and nationally. The Doc captained the St Kilda Football club to its only premiership in 1966, was a champion horse breeder and trainer and a state politician until 1987, when he retired to coach his beloved Saints. Many who reach the same levels of success as Darrel Baldock lose grips on their humility and empathy for others. However, throughout his life, The Doc remained a humble and kind soul, loved by his friends, family and community.This sculpture has become a beloved staple at Latrobe, drawing in crowds who want to take photos with this legendary man. Recreating such a worthy role model in bronze reminds others to reach high, while never losing sight of their roots.

Gillie and Marc were commissioned by St Augustine’s College to create an artwork that would teach their religious history in a way students would enjoy. Gillie and Marc flew to Cairns to meet with the principal and administration to brainstorm initial ideas. They came up with four ideas and then relayed them to the students. The final product was the Lavalla Table, named after the village in France where St Marcellin Champagnat established the world’s first Marist school. The table also includes two statues of boys talking to each other. The artists believe that when people sit together at the table to enjoy their favourite drink or meal, conversations are formed that can change history. This table represents human kindness at its epitome, where the youth of today can join each other with open hearts, and open minds to break down barriers that will make the future a better and more accepting place! After it was put in the playground, it became a huge hit! It’s strong enough so the children can sit at the table and have lunch. The feedback has been that they’re on it every day and the students love being part of this important historical event.

Kenny Russell was a revered jockey who won four premierships before being tragically killed during a race at the age of 42. Even more heartbreaking, his wife Carol was in the crowd and witnessed his death. However, after his death the horse racing community came together with kindness and compassion to support the late Russell’s widow. There is now a memorial race in his honour at the Callaghan Park, which she regularly attends. Gillie and Marc were commissioned by North Burnett Council to replace the beloved fiberglass sculpture of the late jockey. The last artwork, made by a different artist, was sadly deteriorating which his quite common with fibreglass. The artists worked closely with Carol to create a more accurate sculpture that would more closely reflect Kenny’s facial features.

A council approached Gillie and Marc and asked them for a sculpture that would unify their community, while paying homage to its character and incredible history. The artists were inspired by the city’s rich farming background, which gave it a very admirable development. It’s because of farmers that communities are able to survive and flourish! The artists created a life-size sculpture of a farmer, with a friendly side-kick! It’s well known that farmers possess an important relationship with animals, and Gillie and Marc wanted to honour this, as well as bring an element of fun into the work. That’s why they created a dog to go with the farmer, adding another dimension to the art The farmer and dog sculpture became a destination in its own right, which led visitors to gain a deeper understanding of community’s roots, and with that, instilled a sense of pride in its residents.

The Old Barker Association commissioned Gillie and Marc to create an artwork to celebrate its 125^th anniversary. The brief was ‘dare to dream…anything is possible’. Gillie and Marc created a life-size figure as a way to make the artwork more relatable for the students. Gillie an Marc wanted the sculpture to embody friendship, compassion, and commitment, so they had one Barker student carrying another younger student on his shoulders. The younger student, with the help if his friend, is able to reach for the starts. The feedback from the school was that the sculpture inspires the students to ban together and dream big – because as long as you have the help of your friends, anything is possible. Old Barker Boy Chris Russel (70) unveiled the sculpture and was joined by many special guests, including the current Head of Barker, Phillip Heath and former three Headmasters.

In early 2017, Gillie and Marc were commissioned to create a sculpture of Lady Mary Fitzroy dipping her toe into water – in recognition of the impact floods have had on Gympie, Queensland. The city is deeply connected to Lady Mary, known for her compassion and philanthropy. Lady Mary Lennox became a Fitzroy when she married her husband, Sir Charles August Fitzroy on a trip to Paris. The British native moved to Australia together, where Sir Charles became the first governor-general of Australia in 1850. Tragically, the well-respected Lady Mary was killed by a carriage accident. The heart broken Governor Fitzroy named a number of Queensland landmarks in memory of his kind wife, including the Mary River, Mary Street, Maryborough, and Mary Terrace. Hers is a story of tragedy, but above all else, love. Gillie and Marc’s creation of the sculpture marked the launch of a historic walking trail for the city of Gympie, which fuels increased tourism to the area.

In 2013, Gillie and Marc were asked to create a bust of the late Pope Saint Jean Paul II.

Jean Paul is known for a monumental act of human kindness, after an assassination attempt on his life. Two years after it happened, Jean Paul II went to visit young man who attempted to murder him, and after a private conversation the two emerged as friends. Jean Paul II said that he sincerely forgave his assassin, and had already done so in the ambulance after the shooting. Each year, John Paul College commemorates his life on August 30^th, and requested that the artists complete the bust sculpture in time for their ceremony. Gillie and Marc succeeded, and the artwork was unveiled to everybody’s delight at the college in Coffs Harbour, NSW. The principal of John Paul College, Michael Carniatio said “Dear Gillie and Marc, I was thrilled to receive the bust of Pope John Paul II. It is exactly what we wanted and will hold pride of place at the front of the College. To have a product so magnificent that was devised from a few photographs and a phone call is absolutely thrilling. Thank you for this wonderful piece of art.

Description
Darwin Military Museum commissioned Gillie and Marc to pay tribute to the Anzac soldiers who bravely fought in WWII. The Government organisation is a very popular tourist destination, ranking second out of 104 sites on Trip Advisor. Every year they hold a Remembrance Day ceremony where retired diggers come along. The artists wanted to create a soldier that would educate foreign tourists while paying warm respects to past soldiers.

This was a wonderful honour and even more important to the artists as Marc’s grandfather fought in Gallipoli. He was shot but survived and was later honoured as a hero. Marc’s grandfather was a kind, loving man and a wonderful grandfather who passed away from lung disease, the effects of mustard gas. Gillie and Marc decided to create this bronze sculpture based on an old photo of him before he went to battle. To all the Anzacs we will never forget the sacrifice you made.

Description
South Australia’s Eyre Peninsula has a rich history with the grains industry and the community of Cummins wanted to recognize their past with a piece of public art. The physical efforts of the wheat lumper was critical to loading and unloading wheat bags at the railway siding throughout the Eyre Peninsula. A small park known as the Railway Triangle is also a part of the town’s heritage. Gillie and Marc decided to honour both these things by installing their sculpture of a Wheat Lumber in the park. The sculpture pays tribute to the men who used to carry and stack bags of wheat, often up for 90 kilograms, for transportation. The idea came following the release of the book, Grain Handling: The Way It Was by the late Jim Cronin. Citipointe Christian College is a primary and high school based in Brisbane. The school commissioned Gillie and Marc to design an Anzac memorial in time for Remembrance Day. The artists create a boy holding an official military hat as a way to pay respects and represent the loss of life without being too literal or traumatising for the students. The artists felt that the younger school children in particular might find the boy more relatable. The school said the sculpture ‘created a real buzz among the students’ with some even trying to guess if the artwork was modelled off one of their peers. It was also an effective way to introduce the topic of war and conflict in an engaging and approachable way. Paying Respects is dedicated to remember all Australians who have served their country in the armed forces in wartime, or with peacekeeping. It’s the ultimate story of human selflessness and bravery.

Description
Canberra’s National Zoo and Aquarium is a small, friendly tourist site that allows its visitors to get up and close and personal with the animals. Crowd favourites are lioness Millie and her two baby cubs, Marjan and Sabi.

When the artists were approached to make something to welcome the guests staying in the Jamala Lodge, they wanted to keep with the Zoo’s “close encounter” atmosphere. Gillie and Marc recreated Millie playing with her lion cubs and the children absolutely adore it. Every day, loads of photos are taken of the children with the sculpture, cuddling the lions they just saw within the zoo.

Gillie and Marc believe art should be touched and loved. For children in particular, the physical laying of hands on animals creates a stronger emotional connection.

Description
Diprotodon is classified as “megafauna” and is more affectionately known as a giant wombat. It is the largest marsupial ever to live and first existed 1.6 million years ago. In 2011, a diprotodon skeleton called Kenny was found in Eulo in outback Queensland. Kenny is one of the largest and best-preserved megafauna skeletons ever discovered.

Gillie and Marc were commissioned by Paroo Shire Council to recreate Kenny in bronze. The artists worked with paleontologists from Queensland Museum to use Kenny’s bones to recreate a biologically accurate, life-sized bronze sculpture. The bronze statue has helped create Paroo as a destination to learn about fossils and mega fauna in general. In fact, on the Outback Queensland website it lists the statue as the number one tourist site above mud springs, air raid shelters and rivers.

Description
In 2012, four rhinos mysteriously died in Targona’s Western Plain Zoo in Dubbo including a mother and her calf. Gillie and Marc wanted to create an artwork in their memory while also raising awareness for the need for rhino conservation.

Three black rhino mother and calf sculptures were installed at the Visitor Information Centre, the Dubbo Regional Airport and the front of the Zoo. The artists used images of the Zoo’s Black Rhino mother and calf Bakhita and Kufara as inspiration for the sculptures. Both the Director of Dubbo Zoo and the Mayor of Dubbo commented to the press on how well these rhinos linked Dubbo and the Zoo while highlighting the plight of wild rhinos.

Poaching is at unprecedented levels. In Africa, rhino populations are barely keeping pace. These sculptures raise awareness of their potential extinction while highlighting the importance of breeding programs.

“Artists Gillie and Marc have done an amazing job of capturing such an iconic species in a very lifelike and natural way,” said Matthew Fuller, Director of Dubbo Zoo.

“These sculptures reflect the community’s pride in the Zoo and the research and conservation endeavours that take place right here in our city,” said Mayor of Dubbo Councillor Mathew Dickerson. “I believe the sculptures in themselves may become iconic city attractions.”

“We were so happy to do this,” Gillie says. “Each of our rhino sculptures is a memento to the rhinos that were lost, a constant reminder of this endangered species and a message to protect threatened animals.”

St Lucy’s is a Dominican Catholic primary school that provides education for those with disabilities,” said Gillie. Jo Karaolis was the principal of St Lucy’s School up until her retirement and she wanted to give the children a parting gift. “We were contacted by Jo to create something that would make the kids less afraid of leaving their parents for the day,” Gillie continued.

Saint Dominic is always represented with a dog and a torch because Dominic’s mother supposedly had a dream when she was pregnant that she was giving birth to a dog who would run through the countryside with a torch in its mouth.

“The life-sized bronze Labrador is a new representation of Saint Dominican symbology. “Labs are one of the friendliest types of dogs, and this was placed outside the front of the school to enchant the pupils – especially on their first day.”

Gillie and Marc have gone through a lot of change and growth during their expansive career. They like to try new things and are always up for a challenge. But one thing that has remained steady and constant is their passion for animal conservation. The artists created Now and Forever for Tasmania’s Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary. The sculpture is a showcase for three endangered species – the Tasmanian devil, the Eastern quoll and the Tasmanian bettong – who desperately need protection. “The director of the wildlife sanctuary came to us and explained how much danger these animals were in,” says Gillie. “He commissioned three sculptures because his goal is to do something about the ignorance concerning these near-extinct animals, and their importance to Australia.” The artists chose to have the three animals cuddling and hiding behind one another as a way to highlight their vulnerabilities. What we do for these beautiful creatures today, will impact their lives forever.

A little slice of France made it’s way to the bustling city of Sydney in the form of the trendy cafe Auvers. Auvers is a little village in the suburbs of Paris and is where the famous artist, Vincent Van Gough lived and created many of his iconic paintings. The cafe has kept this theme of art and creation at it’s core, exuding creativity, both through the walls as well as the incredibly presented food, a work of art in and of itself.

Inspired by the great painter at the heart of Auvers, Gillie and Marc created a sensational mural for the cafe which covers an entire wall. Their beloved lovers, Rabbitwoman and Dogman, zip through the sleepy village of Auvers, coffee in hand and Van Gough sunflowers blossoming around them. As the customers enjoy the exquisite food, they can sit amongst the art, soaking it in and being transported to a to a romantic French village with very talented artists.

The Pit Pony Experience Project was a community-driven idea to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the last working pit ponies in Australia. Wharrier and Mr Ed retired from the Collinsville Coal Mine in 1990. The ponies were mates to the miners and symbols of strength, unity and companionship in the small town. The Collinsville community banded together to raise nearly $200,000. Gillie and Marc created a life-sized pit pony bronze statue, which is situated in the center of the town. The project went viral and made news headlines across Australia. The Pit Pony brought a small community together, and wowed an entire nation.

Description
The District Council of Grant awarded Gillie and Marc with the opportunity to create a feature sculpture for the Port MacDonnell Waterfront. The artists were successful with their design of a life -size bronze figure of a fisherman returning from sea with a freshly caught southern rock lobster. The sculpture commemorates not only the Lobster fishing industry of the area, which is known as Australia’s Rock Lobster capital, but also the local community and industry of fisherman.

The majestic Southern Ocean holds an array of sea life including southern rock lobster, tuna, and abalone, with the edge of the continental shelf off our coast considered one of the best places to spot whales, dolphins, seals and seabirds. A number of charter boat companies’ offer exclusive fishing or marine wildlife tours (links below). The Port MacDonnell breakwater protects South Australia’s largest Rock Lobster Fishing Fleet and provides sheltered conditions for recreational water sports and fishing. Gillie and Marc created the Lobster Fisherman to show the history and character of the area.

Description
Larry L. Luing, who transformed a secretarial school into Berkeley College, which focuses on business and professional studies and has multiple locations in the metropolitan area, died last Thursday in Florida. He was 86 and a former resident of Oakland.

The Iowa-born Mr. Luing, a Korean War Army veteran, joined the Berkeley School in 1965 as vice president of administration. He was working at the time at McGraw-Hill, selling textbooks to business schools. Mr. Luing eventually became owner of the Berkeley School, which had been founded three decades earlier in East Orange. Under his leadership, the for-profit institution earned regional accreditation and the license to award associate and bachelor’s degrees. He retired as president and chairman of the board in 2001.

“Mr. Luing was a great visionary who was largely responsible for establishing Berkeley College as a leader at the forefront of career-focused education,” school President Michael J. Smith said in a statement. “He touched the lives of tens of thousands, not only throughout our region, but globally as well.”

Gillie and Marc created this sculpture in memory of him.

Cate Blanchett is an internationally acclaimed and award-winning actress, producer, humanitarian, and dedicated member of the arts community. In recognition of her continued advocacy for the arts and support of humanitarian and environmental causes, Blanchett has been awarded the Companion of the Order of Australia in the General Division; the Centenary Medal for Service to Australian Society through Acting; and the Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French Minister of Culture.

She also holds Honorary Doctorates of Letters from the University of New South Wales, the University of Sydney, and Macquarie University. Blanchett is equally accomplished and celebrated on the stage, having led the Sydney Theatre Company as Co-Artistic Director and CEO for six years alongside Andrew Upton. Some of her most notable stage roles live within productions of A Streetcar Named Desire, Uncle Vanya, Gross und Klein, The Maids, and Hedda Gabler, for which she was honored with the Ibsen Centennial Commemoration Award. Blanchett was nominated for a Tony Award for her role in The Present and was most recently seen onstage in the National Theatre’s production of When We Have Sufficiently Tortured Each Other. She is also currently featured in photographer Julian Rosefeldt’s art exhibition, Manifesto.

Her countless extraordinary film performances have garnered Blanchett three BAFTAs, two Academy Awards and three Golden Globe Awards. She led the 71st Cannes Film Festival as Jury President in 2018. Blanchett is a patron of the Sydney Film Festival, an ambassador for the Australian Film Institute and The Old Vic theatre, and a lifetime ambassador for the Australian Conservation Foundation. She is also a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), and was honored with a Crystal Award at the 2018 World Economic Forum in Davos. Blanchett is Co-Founder and President of production company Dirty Films, and a mother to four children.

Three-time Olympic gold medallist, Gabby Douglas is an American artistic gymnast, noted for her trailblazing performances in individual all-around and team competitions. In 2012, she was named female athlete of the year for her landmark sporting achievements.

As a member of the USA women’s national gymnastics team in the 2012 Summer Olympics, Douglas won gold in both the individual and all-around competitions, becoming the first African American and the first of African descent in Olympic history to do so at the same Olympics.

Perhaps the world’s most noted conservationist, Dame Jane Morris Goodall DBE is an English primatologist, anthropologist, and the world’s foremost expert on chimpanzees. Founder of the Jane Goodall Institute, Goodall is well regarded for the many decades of study she has done on social and family interactions of wild chimpanzees.

Unheard of at the time, Goodall began her solo study of endangered chimps in 1960 in Tanzania, despite having no collegiate training. Doing this resulted in Goodall observing the chimps in a subversive manner, publishing revolutionary findings, and becoming the only human to be accepted into a chimpanzee society.

Humanitarian, scholar, educator, and author, Dr Tererai Trent is one of the world’s most internationally recognized voices for quality education and women’s empowerment. Distinguished as Oprah Winfrey’s “All-time favorite guest”, Trent is a prominent activist for equal rights to education, her contribution to this cause was born from her own fight against adversity.

Trent was born in Zimbabwe (formally Rhodesia) when poverty, war, and traditional women’s roles denied women the opportunity to attend school. She secretly taught herself to read, and later wrote her dreams, which included getting a bachelor’s degree, a master’s, and a PhD. She then sealed them in a tin can and buried them deep in the ground.

Despite marrying young and having three children by the time she was eighteen, Trent never lost sight of her dreams. Through hard work and belief in her dreams, she eventually earned multiple degrees, and a prominent global platform with world leaders and international businesses and audiences where she advocates for universal access to quality education.

Trent has published two books, won the 2018 NAACP Award for Outstanding Literary Work, and improved education for over 6,000 children. A true inspiration, Trent’s motto is “Tinogona”, which means “It is achievable!”

Tall and glorious, Trent’s flower is a beautiful yet durable flame lily. An incredible climbing flower, flame lilies can reach a height of almost 10 feet. As well as being able to rise and thrive in all conditions, flame lilies also share Trent’s home of Zimbabwe where they are the national flower.
