Description
This powerful life-sized bronze sculpture pays tribute to Edward ‘Teddy’ Sheean, a Tasmanian hero and the first Royal Australian Navy member to receive the prestigious Victoria Cross. Created by renowned sculptors Gillie and Marc, the statue captures Sheean’s unwavering bravery and sacrifice, symbolizing his final moments aboard the HMAS Armidale during World War II. Strapped to an anti-aircraft gun, Sheean defended his fellow sailors against attacking Japanese aircraft, choosing duty and courage over personal safety. This heartfelt tribute was unveiled in Sheean’s hometown of Latrobe, Tasmania, and stands as a lasting reminder of his gallantry and commitment to his comrades and country.
