Description Exhibited at Woolloomooloo Wharf 2015.
Crab Riders is a three-piece artwork of three large-scale crabs, two of which are ridden by Dogman and Rabbitwoman. It was a part of the Sculpture by the Wharf Festival in Sydney’s glamorous Finger Wharf in Woolloomooloo. Crab Riders continues the artists’ passionate exploration of environmental issues while encouraging playful interaction from the public. Gillie and Marc believe that crabs are more symbolic than ever, in a world facing incredible environmental challenges. Crabs are resilient and strong, thanks to their thick exoskeleton, and are some of the most ancient creatures to walk among us. The artists wanted the march of the crabs to continue in the face of ocean warming, pollution and acidification. It’s very easy to only care about animals that are cuddly and cute, but Gillie and Marc believe we should find compassion for even the strangest and scariest animals. Dogman and Rabbitwoman sit peacefully on top of the crabs encouraging us to do the same with the crab who is riderless. Climbing aboard a crab is a unique and clever way to instantly build a bond with these amazing creatures. One of the crab sculptures has also been permanently installed in Frankston Pier in Victoria.

Description Featured in 2012 Sculptures By the Sea, Bondi Now installed permanently at McClelland Gallery & Sculpture Park, VIC Each year in Sydney an outdoor sculpture exhibition called Sculpture by the Sea takes place for four weeks along the coastal walk of Bondi and Tamarama. Gillie and Marc have been a part of this festival twice now and have taken out awards for their artworks that have been seen by over a half million people In 2012, the artists created The Travellers Have Arrived for the event. The festival director’s response was that it was “brilliantly modelled” and a highlight for many visitors. “Bondi is a pilgrimage,” Marc says “Backpackers from around the world flock there to call it home. The characters were inspired by Mary and Joseph. So the sculpture represents Bondi as a modern-day Bethlehem.” The Travellers Have Arrived exemplifies the way art can make us feel small. These artworks remind us that we’re just like everyone else, we’re never alone in our travels – whether they’re across the world or across town for coffee. We’re all just ants in an ant farm. The Travellers Have Arrived is now on permanent exhibition at the McClelland Sculpture Park in Langwarrin, Victoria. The McClelland Sculpture Park is Australia’s leading sculpture park, and an innovative space for contemporary sculpture to be shown.
Tell me a little bit about “The Travellers Have Arrived”? How was it made? What does it mean to you? How did it end up in Las Vegas? ’The Travellers Have Arrived’ was a piece we originally created for the renowned outdoor sculpture exhibition, ‘Sculpture by the Sea’ in Sydney, Australia in 2012. The original location, Bondi, is like a pilgrimage for travellers from all around the world searching for surf, adventure, and a place to call home. Expertly crafted from silicon bronze, the characters of the sculpture were inspired by Mary and Joseph on their famous pilgrimage, turning Bondi into a modern day Bethlehem. The sculpture reminds us that we’re just like everyone else, we’re never alone in our travels, whether that takes us across the world or across town for a coffee ’The Travellers Have Arrived’ was moved to New York City where it lived for two years, but The Cosmopolitan had their eye on it. After conversations with the hotel, we decided that Las Vegas and The Cosmopolitan were a wonderful location for ‘The Travellers’ to move on to.
What makes this public art a good fit for Las Vegas and The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas? When The Cosmopolitan approached us with their desire to have the sculpture moved to their hotel, we realised it would be a great fit. Welcoming other travellers from all across the world to one of the top tourist destinations, ‘The Travellers Have Arrived’ would become a welcoming and comforting sight to all who are seeking comfort and companionship while away from their home. Just like it was for Bondi, Las Vegas would become the modern day Bethlehem. As a luxury hotel, The Cosmopolitan is a great fit, tying in with the luxurious qualities of bronze and the stylish and innovative concept of the design.
Were there any unique challenges in bringing this to/installing this in Las Vegas? Yes, the distance the sculpture had to be transported and the weight of it. The sculpture weighs one tonne worth of bronze, so it is very heavy. This created a logistical challenge with a distance of 2,232 miles to cover from New York City to Las Vegas.
Being a married couple, what are some of the challenges/advantages of working together? We are incredibly lucky to work as a couple because we believe we are soul mates. We have lived and worked side by side for the past 27 years and it has been absolutely wonderful. We spark creativity within each other and encourage one another to push ourselves out of our comfort zones. We have had the most wonderful experiences, such as travelling to Kenya to meet and study the final three white rhinos, which we then created a hugely successful public sculpture to promote the struggles of these beautiful animals. It is wonderful to work as a team and we would not change it for the world.
Public art by renowned artists has become increasingly accessible to tourists and locals in Las Vegas resort-casinos? Any thoughts on this? It is fantastic that public art is becoming more accessible. Public art makes a city richer in terms of history, culture, and beauty. It is a wonderful way of telling a story or giving an important message. It can tell the history of the city, or showcase what is important for the people. Having this story told in a way that millions of people can access on a regular basis shows the importance of these messages and sparks conversations and passion on a scale that a work in a gallery could never invoke. We have been using our sculpture projects to try to contribute to the change we want to see in the world. By showcasing important issues such as conservation and gender equality, we are planting the seed for change into the minds of all who see them, a seed that could eventually blossom into activism and change.

Description Early Morning Coffee is a three-metre tall sculpture of Dogman and Rabbitwoman peacefully enjoying their morning coffee. The artwork was first unveiled in the ritzy Sydney suburb of Double Bay where it wowed passersby for two years. School children would run past and laugh at their exposed genitals, or literally climb up on to them. Gillie and Marc are regulars at Double Bay and know that a good cup of a coffee and dining al fresco is a huge part of the neighbourhood’s culture. So they created an artwork that beautifully enhances this outdoorsy, modern lifestyle and community.

Description "Marilyn Rabbitwoman is Glowing" is a striking bronze sculpture that merges the worlds of pop culture and artistic symbolism. This piece features Rabbitwoman now embodying the iconic image of Marilyn Monroe with her skirt playfully blowing upwards. Rabbitwoman represents the duality of human nature and the connection between humans and animals. She embodies the concept of "Am I Conscious?"—a reflection on self-awareness and identity. By placing Rabbitwoman in Marilyn's legendary pose, the sculpture invites viewers to contemplate themes of femininity, allure, and the timeless quest for self-discovery.

Description Exhibited as part of The Harbour Sculpture Prize, July 30 - August 9, 2015, Deckhouse & Clarkes Point Reserve, Woolwich Exhibited on Woollomooloo Wharf, Sydney Exhibited at Jing'an Sculpture Park, Beijing Permanently located at Circle on Cavill Shopping Centre, Surfers Paradise Beach, QLD Gillie and Marc have spent the last 15 years based in Sydney, a city famous for its gorgeous surf beaches. The artists’ son, Ben, is an avid surfer. As a family they would hit the beach frequently to watch him catch waves. They found it absolutely mesmerising. The Wave Riders is a tribute to the lost art of tandem surfing. It was picked for display for the 2015 Sydney Harbour Sculpture Prize and was installed in Sydney’s Woolloomooloo Wharf for three months in the beginning of 2016. Surfing is a surprisingly social sport. Gillie and Marc also created The Wave Riders in the spirit of doing things together. Tandem surfing might have gone out of fashion in the sixtiese but these wave riders are perfectly in tune with each other, and able to find balance despite the odds. The sculpture is making waves around the world and has found a home both in the stunning luxury resort, Mantra Circle on Cavill in Surfers Paradise and the Jing'An Sculpture Park in Shanghai — the world’s biggest outdoor sculpture exhibition.

Description I just use my muscles as a conversation piece, like someone walking a cheetah down 42nd Street. The stag is possibly one of the most obvious and ubiquitous symbols for masculinity in our culture. Think deer heads mounted on the wall of a proud hunters lodge, and two stags locking their antlers to battle for a does attention. But, they spend their lives balanced on spindly ankles – darting and leaping like ballerinas and running away whenever they hear a loud noise or see a bright light. Arnie is an icon the self-made man and the embodiment of the American dream. Long before he was governing California, he was oiled-up and posing, in a manoeuvre so iconic you don't need to see his face to recognise him.
This is Arnie's most memorable pose, much more memorable than his wave from the podium when he was elected Governor. This is the pose that turned him into a bodybuilding icon and spurred millions to emulate his body. Arnie considered himself a sculpture, and Gillie and Marc continue to be fascinated by the way that he transformed his own body, as sculptors they're interested in the way he forced us to look at the male form in a new way. Gillie and Marc chose the stag head for him for it's complicated masculinity, it's second life as a decorative art form and it's European origin.

Description It's great to be a blonde. With low expectations, it's very easy to surprise people. You could be forgiven for considering poodles the pageant queens of the dog world they even seem to have a different posture than other dogs. They stand with their head held high and their chest out. Their fur is always perfectly permed and sometimes their owners even give them avant garde haircuts. Actually, theyre one of the smartest dog breeds. Theyre easy to train because they pay attention, and are loyal to their owners. Poodles are also very sensitive; they can suffer terrible separation anxiety and flinch if theyre touched unexpectedly. This is Pamela Anderson, as she will most likely be remembered in her high cut Baywatch swimsuit. For all the controversy she has courted in the tabloids over her career, shell always be an icon because of her famous figure. Gillie and Marc are intrigued by the way the public reacts to a famous figure like this with doll like proportions, that can seem so far away from ordinary. As Gillie and Marc considered how to turn Pamela into a hybrid they learnt more about her contradictions. She has walked the runway for Vivienne Westwood and signed copies of her book at Wal Marts. Shes married and divorced rock stars while campaigning fiercely for animal rights. During her time on the show that thrust her into the limelight she became the ultimate California girl, despite being Canadian. They feel they've found her perfect match in the deceptively clever poodle.

Description Im not bad. Im just drawn that way The rabbit is one of Gillie and Marcs favourite hybrids and they didn't just chose the rabbit for Jessica Rabbit because she married one and took his name. They saw qualities in the rabbit that were completely different to the qualities Jessica Rabbit is said to possess. Rabbits are timid prey animals, with acute hearing and sight who become startled very easily. They run away at the slightest jolt, and get very anxious. Jessica Rabbit was depicted as a woman with endless confidence, who held men captive. Her impossible curves quickly became iconic and in Who Framed Roger Rabbit men constantly fawned and obsessed over her. Its definitely fair to say that if Jessica Rabbit were a real woman she would be very intimidating. So when Gillie and Marc wanted to create a life-size bronze Jessica Rabbit it was important to them to turn her into a hybrid that would make her less intimidating.

They have each been invited to the party as representatives of some of the best-known species in the world. And yet they all are dangerously close to the same threat, extinction.
Koala: Koalas are the beloved icon of Australian wildlife, the adorable little marsupial with sleepy eyes and gigantic fluffy ears. They can be seen high in the embrace of eucalyptus trees, munching away on their favourite leaves for the vast majority of their day.
African elephant: The African elephant is the largest land animal in the world and wanders across 37 countries in Africa. They are a keystone species meaning they are crucial for their environment. They use their tusks to dig up dry riverbeds in the dry season, digging down to the water hidden underneath and creating water holes for others.
Masai giraffe: The tallest living animal in the world, the giraffe tower over the savannas of Africa. It’s good that they do because a group of giraffes is aptly named a tower! As a whole, the giraffe is listed as vulnerable but the Masai and reticulated species are endangered. The Masai populations have been estimated to have declined by 52% in the past few decades, mainly due to habitat loss and poaching.
Grevy’s zebra: With stripes as unique as our fingerprints, the zebra is an iconic member of African wildlife. Grevy’s zebra is the largest and most endangered and is more closely related to the wild ass than the horse, the more common plains zebras’ cousins.
Lion:The African lion, an emblematic symbol of strength and majesty, faces complex challenges in the wild. Habitat loss, human-wildlife conflict, and poaching have contributed to a decline in lion populations across Africa.
Orangutan:The orangutan, a critically endangered species of great ape found in the rainforests of Borneo and Sumatra, is facing severe population decline due to habitat loss, illegal hunting, and the palm oil industry.
Cheetah:The cheetah, known for its unparalleled speed and sleek build, stands as one of Africa's most distinctive predators. Despite its remarkable capabilities, cheetah populations have faced a decline due to habitat loss, human-wildlife conflict, and illegal wildlife trade.
Northern white rhino:There are two species of white rhino, the northern and southern. The southern rhino was thought to be extinct until the late 19th century when a small population was discovered in South Africa.
Mountain Gorilla:The mountain gorilla, a majestic and endangered species, commands attention as one of the most iconic primates. Residing in the high-altitude forests of Central Africa, these gentle giants face numerous threats, including habitat loss, poaching, and political instability.
Hippo:One of the most recognizable animals, this blubbery giant has charmed the world, even though it’s considered to be one of the most dangerous! They are at major risk from poaching, with a 2006 study showing a 20% reduction in their populations over the past decade. They are killed for their meat as well as the ivory from their tusks.
Chimpanzee: The chimpanzee is our closest living relative, sharing about 99% of our DNA. It’s even thought that we have a common ancestor who lived sometime between 7-13 million years ago!

Description One of the most intimate experiences we share as humans is also the simplest, sitting down on the couch together and sharing time over coffee and cake. It’s a time where we can nourish, support, and enjoy time with each other, a time that is cherished by many families all around the world.
But not everyone gets to share this same level of love and support. The world is currently experiencing the 6th mass extinction. More and more beautiful creatures are being pushed towards the threat of extinction and the reasons can always be linked back to us, humans. We have moulded the earth to suit our needs, indifferent to the effects on the other living creatures who share our planet.
This public sculpture experience is an invitation to join the best party in the world. Expertly crafted in bronze, the couch is ready and the animals are already partying, all that is left is for the public to take their seats.
Rabbitwoman and Dogman, the internationally beloved hybrid characters who have travelled the world spreading messages of love, acceptance, and adventure, play host to the party. They sit in the middle of the couch either side of an African elephant. Their guests; twelve of the world's most endangered animals. Rabbitwoman and Dogman devoured books, old and new, snuggled comfortably against each other all the while.
