Community Public Art Gift to Be Unwrapped in Ocean View
Whimsical sculpture revealed at celebration on Dec. 21
NORFOLK, Va. – A sculpture commissioned by the Norfolk Public Art Program will be unwrapped in Ocean View this weekend! Join the community, friends, neighbors and special guest, Norfolk City Councilman Tommy Smigiel, for the big reveal on Saturday, Dec. 21, at 11 a.m. at 2100 E. Ocean View Ave. (at 21st Bay St. and East Beach Dr.).
The sculpture, The Family Vespa Riders, by renowned Australian contemporary artists Gillie and Marc, is a whimsical scene of a dog and rabbit family taking a ride on a red Vespa scooter. It stands at 12 feet tall and will serve as a gateway entrance and transition point into the light, airy and fun energy that defines the Ocean View community. The artwork represents the joy of exploration, togetherness and the beauty of shared adventures.
The artwork is the second partnership between the Norfolk Public Art Program and Coastal VA Plein Air, a local nonprofit that contributed funds for the artwork purchase. “Chryshellis,” in Ocean View Beach Park was dedicated in 2021.
