Description
Gillie and Marc’s bronze sculpture of Joseph Nogolgot brings an important and little-known chapter of Western Australian cricket history permanently into public view.
Joseph Nogolgot was the first Nyoongar team captain, leading the 1879 Aboriginal Team in one of the earliest examples of organised Aboriginal cricket in Western Australia. With limited photographic records available, historical sketches from the period helped inform the sculpture’s design, including Joseph’s stance and commanding presence.
Created to ensure his contribution is seen, remembered and shared, the sculpture acknowledges the deep history of Aboriginal cricket in Western Australia. Permanently positioned at the WACA Ground, Joseph now stands as a powerful connection between the game’s past and its future.
